I have to say the more success Tyler Wells has here in AA, the more I think he can be a great addition to the Twins rotation as soon as next year. I would have thought he’d struggle as the hitters in AA are much more advanced than A+ ball hitters. But instead Wells is pitching BETTER than he did in Ft Myers (and he has also maintained his great control/command). I think he’ll surprise a lot of people when he gets to the Bigs.

Don’t forget about Tyler Wells. He is a very intriguing prospect, especially for a 15th round draft pick.

Especially since he has well exceeded his career high in innings pitched. His career high in innings pitched was 83 which he did last year, so far he has pitched 114 1/3 innings this year and looks stronger now than when he started the season! I think Thorpe still has some ceiling in his potential.

I am pleased to see Thorpe having a strong start in his AAA debut. The fact he pitched into the 7th and had 100 pitches (71 strikes) is awesome given how many innings he has pitched this year and he still looks strong! Graterol was flat out dominant! It’s awesome seeing him improve in Ft Myers like he has. I’m still thinking Graterol will start next year in Ft Myers given he has yet to post dominant stats in Ft Myers. But I think he’ll be in Chattanooga by early June next year AT THE LATEST.

So what’s wrong with Berrios? To be honest I think he can pitch better than this? Does he have a dead arm? Is he off mentally after his Cleveland start? I don’t want to be disappointed in the kid, I just wish he’d pitch better rather than falling in these ruts.

While I am super excited of Wells’ success in AA it has been in 3 games (2 starts). I have to believe he will finish the year in AA, if all goes well and he continues to look dominant I have to think he will be promoted pretty quickly next year to AAA with a September call up next year. I agree though that he should get a look in the AFL, it could be a good stage to help catapult his prospect status for next year.

First off, it’s time Stephen Gonsalves gets a long look at the MLB level. He’s pitched well enough (and over all better than Kohl Stewart) to deserve a longer look in the Twins rotation. Secondly even in a loss I am still excited about what Tyler Wells can potentially do for the Twins in the rotation in the next yr or two. It is said the jump from A+ to AA ball is the biggest, well...Tyler Wells is looking as good if not better since his call up to Chattanooga. I can’t wait to see Tyler pitch next season as he gets closer to his Twins debut, in fact I think there’s an outside chance Wells debuts for the Twins as a September especially if he keeps up what he’s doing now.

Article: What To Do With Byron Buxton?
FormerMinnasotan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I say shut Buxton down after Rochester’s season ends, and then have him work with someone in the off season to help improve his swing and get him mentally ready for 2019. I still see Buxton as an important piece for us, but instead of bringing him back and watching him fail some more I think Buxton needs to take a step back, get some good coaching and practice time in the off season and come back a new ball player in 2019. -
#freegonsalves...6 scoreless innings 2 walks 5 K’s, a 2.96 ERA in AAA. If Kohl Stewart is granted his promotion Gonsalves certainly deserves a look now, not in 2 weeks...

Yea! Happy to see him move up! As long as health isn’t an issue he should make his Twins debut sometime next year!

What kind of prospect is Edwar Colina? I go through his numbers in Cedar Rapids and he looks solid, but I have to think his lack of height (he’s listed at 5’11”) might play into his potential down the road. What could be Colina’s floor/ceiling realistically be?

I’d love to see Tyler Wells, Brent Rooker, Nick Gordon, and Cody Stashak in the AFL for sure. As for Lewis Thorpe I don’t know how he could pitch in the AFL when he has signed to play in the Australian Baseball League in our off season. Either way it looks like Thorpe will get some fall/winter ball innings in it just looks like it will be in his native Australia.

Seth since we are on the topic of promotions with Kohl Stewart’s call up to Minnesota I have to wonder why Lewis Thorpe hasn’t been promoted at least to Rochester? For him to have his 3.58 ERA, have more innings pitched than hits given up, have batting average against of .251 (when at one time it was around .360), and a WHIP of 1.25 it took a Herculean effort to do so and yet it looks like he’ll end the year in Chattanooga. Why? My thought is if he does well he should be rewarded, right? A lot gets made of Kohl’s SO/BB splits and while that’s nice Thorpe’s in the same amount of innings is 131/30...significantly better than Kohl’s and for this being his 1st year in AA and for his lack of minors experience (thanks to Tommy John and Mono) is exceptional. So should he at least start next year in Rochester, I mean one thing to look at is control AND command. Thorpe has had great control all year and based off of his improvements his command seems pretty exceptional too, good enough to be moved up IMO.

I can agree with Romero, but disagree with Gonsalves and especially Thorpe. How can the Twins know what they have in Gonsalves if he hasn’t had a chance to prove himself at the Big league level? And if the Twins know what they have in Thorpe how could they not promote Thorpe to at least AAA by now? I mean for Thorpe to even have decent season numbers in ERA, batting average against, WHIP, and especially having more innings pitched to hits took a Herculean effort by Thorpe to do so, and the Twins don’t promote him for that effort? It tells me they don’t see the bigger picture on Thorpe, of course I hope they prove me wrong.
-
At the same time Kohl could have earned a September call up. They could see him then. To not find a spot in the rotation for the other prospects who should be challenged now is silly IMO.

What I don’t understand is the narrative that somehow Kohl Stewart is more “ready” for the MLB than Lewis Thorpe. Look when both were teammates in Chattanooga neither differentiated themselves with each other. And NOW you look at the raw numbers and clearly while in AA Lewis Thorpe is the better pitcher RIGHT NOW. Thorpe has a lower batting average against by 50 points his WHIP is 20 points lower and has a SO/BB split of 131/30. Also Thorpe, not Stewart is averaging 10.9 K/9. I mean I’m sure to a way you could reshuffle the deck if you wanted to bring Thorpe up but they chose not to. But clearly given how Thorpe has throughly been the best starting pitcher in the upper minors from July-now says he should be “tested” before his innings limit shuts him down since he has more than earned it, especially more than Kohl Stewart.

I guess I am a bigger let the kids play kinda guy considering what we have. I suppose if we could get Santana for under $10 million it may be tempting but I also hope that the Twins alleviate the log jam of minor league arms. I see Fernando Romero at the point of his career that Berrios was in 2016, the only difference is Romero has pitched more capablely in his 1st year in the bigs than Berrios did so conventional wisdom should be that he’ll be even more ready next year and with his immense skill set I don’t want to see him even start the year in AAA. That will set up Lewis Thorpe being moved up to a crowded Rochester rotation and give some mid season promotion opportunities for the likes of Sean Poppen, Tyler Wells, and Brusdar Graterol.
-
If they are reluctant to bring up Gonsalves then at least bring up Lewis Thorpe for a couple or three starts if you want Gonsalves to work on control/command since it looks apparent Thorpe has a good handle on control/command (131 K’s, 30 BB in 108 innings with a B.B./9 rate of 2.5) and after those starts bring up Gonsalves. Problem solved.
-
Santana isn’t healthy, and since we are not in any races we might as well do Santana a favor and shut him down and bring up Gonsalves or Romero (and give Thorpe a taste of AAA) a spot in the rotation. If we aren’t in contention there’s no reason to keep an injured 36 year old starting pitcher who has nothing in our rotation for the rest of the season.
-
I am not sold on Thorpe getting the chances he deserves. I mean he should already be in AAA, and I have a gut feeling he’ll repeat in AA next year just like Gonsalves did this year despite being the organization’s best minor league starter since July (since Bailey Ober is out now with injury). I feel if anything Thorpe should be excellerated towards the Twins as I find it hard to find a starting pitching prospect with better control AND command with real strikeout capability. Just my two cents worth, I hope I am proven wrong next year and Thorpe is starting for the Twins by June.
