Article: Twins Promote Jose Berrios
FormerMinnasotan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree and remember Berrios talking about changing his pitching approach. Berrios at this point is so much more of a complete pitcher than any prospects I can remember. Plus at Rochester last year if his fastball didn't work he'd use his curve or change up. Now Matt Garza (the other super highly touted Twins pitcher) was dead set on over powering MLB hitters with his fastball only when he came up. He was no where as mature and was not good at making adjustments like Berrios is. Do I initially expect Berrios to struggle? Well yeah, but with Berrios supereme confidence in him self, his work ethic, and general high pitching IQ, I think he will be pretty good. -

The difference between Berrios and Garza is Berrios has great secondary stuff and is willing to change his approach if one pitch isn't working. Honestly Berrios 2 curveballs are as good as his fastball and Berrios has no problem mixing in his change up as well. Garza came into the bigs expecting to over power hitters with his fastball and not adapt to MLB hitters. -

Initially I could see Berrios struggle. It will take him a little while to adjust to Major League hitters and he may be a bit excited. But what I have seen so far is Berrios is smart and adjusts pretty quickly. Plus his three pitches are Major League quality stuff. Actually I am surprised, I could have sworn the Twins FO was going to wait and see with Berrios. -
Not to be a jerk, just curious. But why is Ryan so hesitant to bring Berrios up? Milone hasn't been real good and Santana (and possibly Duffey) are hurting. But from what I hear there are no plans in place to bring Berrios up anytime soon. Why? I mean he's going to dominate in AAA we all know that. What Berrios needs is to face batters that really challenge him IMO. And Berrios won't have much of that in AAA. I am excited for this kid, following him through the minors I have found he learns pretty quickly and is really smart when it comes to adjustments towards hitters and adjustments to the different levels of competition. I expect he will be the same once he gets to the big league club. Will he struggle at times? Well yeah, but I suspect he will recover quickly.
-
And that is another reason Terry Ryan needs to go. Berrios is ready NOW. If Berrios was on any other MLB club he would have already been called up last year and may have been in the rotation this year. But penny pinching Ryan doesn't want to bring Berrios up this year at all. He wants Berrios to be a September call up NEXT year. Berrios right now is better than Duffey IMO and has been far and away more consistent than Alex Meyer has ever been. So what if Berrios is young for making his MLB debut? Didn't Stephen Strasberg pitch like the equivalent of 1 year in the minors before he was called up? This is year 4 of Berrios in the minors and there is NO WAY Ryan needs to see another full season of AAA ball to determine if Berrios is ready. If Ryan so on the fence with Berrios he might as well trade him away because it seems pretty clear Berrios really doesn't have a future here.

My concern about not moving Berrios is that how is he going to become a better pitcher if he doesn't get challenged by better hitters? And as far as walks being a concern he has fewer walks in each start this season (4, 3, 1). And knowing Berrios, he may have been slightly over pitching in his first two starts (maybe being over amped to show the Twins how improved he is), and made adjustments to how he pitches by his 3rd start. But really do we have to see Berrios completely dominate this level to a point where he could rival his dominant stint in Fort Meyers in 2014? I want to see him fail some early on in his major league career because he will "get it" on how to attack big league hitters quickly. I just don't want to see the Twins jerk him around the way they did with Matt Garza in the 2007 season. I understand where Garza is now, but in 2007 he was seen as a legit top of the rotation starter who had a great spring (out pitched Carlos Silva for the #5 spot in the rotation, sent down until July). Anywho keeping Berrios in Rochester till August or September is stupid if he continues to pitch like an ace as he SHOULD start the 2017 season with the Twins on day 1. At this pace he won't have a chance like that till 2018.

I agree with your assessement. In a way over all I can still see the Twins want Meyer to be a starter rather than a reliever. As far as their approach with Berrios I agree this is what the Twins want, but to keep Berrios in AAA for most of the season will do Berrios next to no good as he NEEDS to learn how to pitch to MLB talent. AAA is filled with failed major leaguers (especially as the season goes by) and to have a protential near to top of the rotation starter doing nothing than pad his stats at AAA does nothing for his over all development. Then again so far Berrios hasn't wowed anyone yet.

IMO if Meyer keeps this up as a starter in Rochester I think the Twins still might consider him a starter at the big league club. His arsonal of pitches is too good to keep him in the bullpen (if he's on he's better than Duffey and around the same level as Berrios). I still think Duffey gets called up first, but at the same time if Meyer dominates and shows even good control how could he not be called up even before Duffey (again this hinges on his control). Only maybe sad thing to come of it is Jose Berrios debut might be delayed longer than Twins fans hope.

I wonder what Stewart is going to do tonight, you know he's got to keep pace with Gonsalves. But IMO both Gonsalves and Stewart better be in Chattanooga by around the middle of the season. Now I am curious, Gonsalves had a fine season in Ft Meyers last year (7-2 2.61 ERA), is his higher K rate and lower walk rate a sign that he has improved that much from last year or is it more that he has had experience in A+ ball?

Looks like Kohl and Steven are having a friendly competition as to who gets promoted to Chattanooga first. I thought the night before Gonsalves was great (6 ip, 2 hits, 0 runs, 4 k's) and the next night Stewart kind of "one ups him". Good for both of them though and a good problem to have in our minor league system.

Ok, that does sound reasonable. I guess it seemed concerning to me because Berrios had some issues with control in spring training. I just hope it isn't a mental thing but just that it was so cold. I really hope to see him with the big league club soon. I do like him, and just really hope he has a lot of success this year.

Ugh, what is up with Berrios? I get his control was off in spring training but 4 walks in 5 innings is seemingly very concerning for this top prospect with no real issues of control until now. So what's the deal? Just curious, but if Berrios can't start controlling his pitches it will be a while if at all if he makes the big league club and that would be disappointing for sure.

Good to see Kohl have as good if not a better outing than Stephen. Also it is good to see Stewart with that nasty fastball he has had the potential to use. If Kohl can use his 94-97 mph fastball and off set it with an equally devastating curveball all of a sudden Stewart is looking a lot more like a bigger version of Jose Berrios.

While it is a little dishearting to see Stephen Gonsalves struggle in the first inning of last nights game, it was good to see him pitch 5 scoreless innings after that, plus his 6 K's and 0 walks in 6 innings has to be a promising sign.

I agree with trying to shop Gibson. At this point he is what he is. With both Hughes and Santana locked up for a while and youngsters in the minors (Berrios, Duffey, Gonsalves, Stewart, Jay, Thorpe) the Twins have to look for 3 spots in the rotation to open up. And with Nolasco and Milone probably not lasting the whole season this year to Duffey and Berrios the Twins should open one more spot and Gibson at this point is easier to move and isn't quite the vet Hughes or Santana is (plus not as good as Santana or Hughes IMO).

Article: 2016 Ft. Myers Miracle Roster Revealed
FormerMinnasotan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Based on Gonsalves body of work so far it looks like he could be more successful than what most scouts think. That said, from what I have heard is Gonsalves needs to improve both his change up and curveball to be seen as a more top of the rotation starter. Tyler Jay from what I have heard supposedly has a ceiling as a #2 starter. And don't forget about Lewis Thorpe. He has a ton of potential and could be better than Stewart, Jay, and Gonsalves.- 14 replies

Would Lewis Thorpe be considered a break out candidate due to him coming back from Tommy John surgery? I have a feeling if he has good control and has improved his secondary pitches he could be special.

Thanks for correcting me. I guess I didn't know the entire process. And I'll admit I am antsy to see Berrios pitch as scouts on a national level seem to love Berrios as much as our local media does.

I don't understand why the Twins didn't simply make room for Berrios in the 40 man roster. I can see why Duffey is ahead of him, but Berrios right now is a better starting pitcher than Pat Dean. Plus if it is so hard to put Berrios on the roster early as a non 40 man roster player, why does the Twins FO blow smoke and proclaim "if Berrios does well in the minors he will get his chances with the big league club"? We all know based on last year's performance Berrios and Duffey will dominate AAA, and while Duffey will easily move up when it's time it seems the Twins will screw with Berrios even if he completely dominated AAA.

Article: Friday Minor League Report
FormerMinnasotan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thorpe sounds like a very mature 20 yr old with his tenacity and high goals set for this year. To be honest until I did my research on Thorpe in 2014 I thought he'd be another Liam Hendricks. But upon learning Thrope's arsonal and his young age I realized Thorpe to be a very legit prospect. I hope all goes well for him. If he can be at worst a #3 in the Twins rotation that would be a plus.- 24 replies

I also wouldn't be too offended if Stephen Gonsalves started in A+ ball in Ft. Meyers and got promoted during the season. From what I have heard the jump from A+ ball to AA is pretty significant so it would stand to reason that Gonsalves would need some time to improve his secondary pitches. Personally I hope Kohl Stewart starts another season in Ft. Meyers as well, just until he can improve both his strikeout rate and walks rate.- 24 replies

That may be true, but honestly I think Berrios is even better than Tyler Duffey and yet Duffey is some how "more MLB ready" than Berrios even though Berrios has by MLB scouts been seen as a much better prospect with a greater pitch selection and simply better pitches as well. Yet one 10 start season has them literally in the corner saying "no, Duffey is virtually a lock even though another pitcher could crack the rotation and be even better than him. And also IMO, Duffey should have been shopped around instead of being treated like a mainstay on the staff, especially when the likes of Stephen Gonsalves, Kohl Stewart, Tyler Jay, and Lewis Thorpe all will be waiting for their turn to crack the rotation as well. Duffey is okay for the present, but not so much the future of the team IMO.

Good to hear Lewis Thorpe is continuing to progress. I think if he can look respectable this year and improve off of what he was in 2014 next year we may have at worst a middle rotation and at best a top of the rotation guy who could have 4 plus pitches at his disposal.- 24 replies
