Front Page: Dear Future Rocco
Don Walcott replied to Thiéres Rabelo's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thanks for the good work, Rocco. But, maybe consider using someone else as 3rd base coach. -
I don't even understand this unwritten rule. Isn't Cave entitled to try for a hit? Should we treat the opposition as anything less than professionals, being paid to do their jobs? So Cave is expected to let a pitcher groove a fastball down the middle? Where does the unwritten rule end? How many runs do you have to be behind at what point in the game? Are we entitled to retaliate now? Do we throw at one of the Rangers' best hitters for no reason? If only we had Mollie or Dozier to educate our young players . . . . IMO, it's not okay to throw at anyone there, especially someone who has nothing to do with breaking unwritten rules. But I don't even think it would have been okay to throw at Cave, had he scorched that ball foul on 3-0. Be a professional, and go out and beat the other team with your ability. The best revenge is a life lived well, or something like that . . . .

Honestly, as I was watching the game, I was hoping they'd just put Yelich on first with the count at 2-0. Harper grooved a 90 MPH fastball down the middle to arguably the best hitter in baseball. He was lucky it didn't go out. It seemed clear that Harper wasn't going to be able to get guys out last night. However, I'm not sure at what point the manager is responsible for getting him out of there. Would have been a pretty quick hook to take him out after the Yelich AB, and would have signaled a lack of confidence in Harper. Harper's been good this year -- somewhat making up for all the guys who we thought would be good but weren't. I'm hoping this is just one bad appearance for him, and in a couple of days, he'll be getting outs for us in Arlington.

It seems like the problem isn't the multi-inning appearances for Rogers. The problem is pitching him the next day. Given his track record, the Sunday's game has to be the last time he pitches again the day after a multi-inning appearance. IMO, he shouldn't have been pitching on Sunday, either.

I know this seems like a lot of hindsight. And I couldn't watch the game today. But I checked the Game Thread, and there were definitely people questioning the decision to bring in Dyson as it was happening. It would have been cool if it had worked. But it was very uncool that it did not work. And Rocco can handle just criticism, as he's a grown ass manager, isn't he?

At least we have Romo and Dyson fresh for tomorrow night, if they're needed.

Add Marwin into that group as a good signing. And Pineda turned out to be a good signing as well. Dumping Addison Reed closed the circle a pretty rough group that were signed before last year. But this year, the FO got free agent signings about as right as possible. Just goes to show that if at first you don't succeed, try, try again. And just because many free agents don't work out, it doesn't mean you never spend money on free agents to help build your team.

Article: Miguel Sano: A Fading Superstar
Don Walcott replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If Sano plays 100 games this year, he's on pace to hit 37 HRs. He's hitting a HR every 10 ABs so far this season.- 114 replies

Article: Week in Review: Home Cooking
Don Walcott replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great summary of the week. There are a lot of positives to this team. We should continue to emphasize them. This team is a lot of fun, and it can get even better.- 15 replies

It's interesting. Now I'm rooting for Sano in a different way. I root for him to silence the critics as much as anything else. He was great today at the plate, and one of his Ks was a terrible call. And he was great in the field, until the error, which looked like a bad hop to me. I hope it's just on this web site, and not coming out from the fans in the game, because I fell like he's the kind of player who thrives on positive feedback. Although Nelson looked at two good pitches before the third strike, that was never a swing. He should have been given a fair chance to bat there. It's been frustrating watching him lately, but I think there were signs from today that he's about to break out and have a hot streak.

I would have like to see the CG, especially as everything was lining up perfectly for it. But it was also good to see Rogers back. That's "Rogers" who is our best reliever and potential All-Star, not "Rodgers." Seriously, can we all just get the spelling of this guy's name right from now on?

Sort of. Having Buxton lead off against lefties would leave Polanco in the #2 spot, where he's started 51 times out 61 games. While Garver has mostly lead off against lefties, he's also batted in every other spot in the order so far. So it's not like we'd be displacing anyone. And although Garver has a .513 OBP against lefties generally, his OBP is .316 when he leads off. Basically, I'd like to see Buxton get more ABs. And hitting him leadoff against lefties and swapping him and Kepler in the 1 and 9 positions would be a very easy and justifiable way of doing that. He's also a scoring machine when he gets on base, which would add something to the leadoff spot that Garver doesn't have.

I think Buxton should lead off against lefties, and Max should lead off against righties. They can swap the #9 spot when they're both in the lineup. Buxton has a .400 OBP vs. lefties. Kepler has a .351 OBP vs. righties.

I think this is exactly right. In the first AB, it was clear Perez didn't want to pitch to EE. In the second AB, it was clear Perez should not be pitching to EE. In the third AB, they shouldn't have forced Perez to pitch to EE. Rather, they should have saved his pitches for Vogelbach, who didn't look like he could hit Perez, until he reached out and blooped one. The way he looks right now, I'm not sure why we'd ever pitch to EE for the rest of this series. Doesn't look like anyone else on that team is going to hurt us. Can't believe the Indians traded him. And I'm worried that he's auditioning for the Astros right now.

Article: Week in Review: Holding Steady
Don Walcott replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
MadBum is stepping up his game . . . . I'm happy with 3-3 at this point. And I'm actually happy that the bullpen fairy tale has come to an end at this point in the season. As Nick pointed out, there's plenty of time to figure this out, and no real pressure on us. I have confidence in this FO to make 1 or 2 moves that will make a big difference in September and October.- 45 replies
