  1. If the Astros felt Polanco was a top ten Twins prospect, then why wouldn't they select him? They're not going to win 60 games with or without him. I would protect Kepler for the same reason but I can understand rolling the dice that he's too far away.
  2. If another team left a top ten talent like Polanco or Kepler off their 40 man, I would want the Twins to pick and stash him for a year. It's not like the Twins will be in contention in 2014. This is how the Jays got Jorge Bell from the Phillies. Every Twins decision should be based on 2015 to 2020.
  3. (36) present roster (2) Free Agent Pitchers (1) Rule 5 (2) Polanco, Kepler The Astros are so bad they may stash Kepler on their roster for a year if not protected. The Twins would need to drop Hermsen or Albers when they sign the second free agent.
  4. I would put the pitchers higher than Polanco or Kepler. If I could only protect seven players for a trade, I would give up Polanco or Kepler before Berrios or Thorpe. Starting pitching is so scarce and valuable. In my opinion, the best way to rank pitchers and position players is based on trade value or in other words, who I would protect more. As always, Seth - you do a great job with your lists.
  5. Text above states Rogers as 2011 pick (needs correction). I assumed it was correct. I look at value this way: who would I'll be less willing to trade. Baxendale has shown a capability to dominate and the Twins have pushed him faster. Neither may make it but at least Baxendale has shown a higher ceiling.
  6. Romero over Jorge Felix seems like a stretch. Rogers over Baxendale doesn't make sense. Baxendale was pushed faster and he totally dominated A+ where Rogers finished. Baxendale was drafted in 2012 where Rogers was drafted in 2011 (both from college). Obviously the Twins see more potential with Baxendale since they pushed him ahead of the 2011 draft class. Yes - he struggled in AA but Hicks struggled in the Majors because he wasn't ready for that level.
  7. Here's my list for pitchers: Garza - E. Santana - Tanaka - expensive (try to get one) Josh Johnson - Hughes - Baker - Colby Lewis - low to medium cost (try to sign two of the four to two year deals)
  8. Tie breaker is the prior year's record
  9. Rebuilding Keys: 1. Understand the goal is to build a winning club for 2016-2022. 2. Maximize players arb years - do not rush prospects into the majors 3. Most young players take a year or two to adjust to the majors 4. Lose enough this year to pick in the top 4. 5. Top 4 pick provides a elite player but also sets up the budget to overpay for a player(s) later in the draft (ex - Gonsalves) 6. At this time - Spend money on young International free agents and not MLB veterans 7. Save payroll now to go over budget down the road (let's hope they don't just pocket the money)
  10. Bard, Chargois, and Berrios didn't make Cedar Rapids? Is it a "limit innings issue" or ability?
  11. The club and agent both know the deal. If Super 2 is avoided then the club has more leverage - one more year before arb. or discount in a multi year contract because of the extra year.
  12. If the Marlins got top prospects then it's a good trade for them. Reyes, Buehrle, and Buck were signed as expensive free agents and Johnson is in his walk year.
  13. Obviously this hurts. Hopefully Ryan signs two legit FA SP and trade for another.
  14. No one will sign him for 4/60 when they could have had for 1/13-14 in a minor deal with the Angels. I was disappointed that Ryan didn't make a trade for him. Either he signs a 1/10 to get back on the market next year or someone takes a risk and signs him for 3/35 I'm hoping for Haren, Baker, and Marcum but my guess is we get Baker at best..
  15. Ratings based on who I would rather keep or trade : Too high: - Salcedo - low k rate even before injury - Herrmann - back-up C/OF - Santana - OBP is too low - Hernandez - nothing special (AAA pitcher) - Ortiz - way too high - Boer - gives up too many hits/IP Too Low: - Minier - even though he hasn't played yet, bonus indicates top 25 to start - Zach Jones - 2012 relief arms are underrated - Michael - 2nd Half stats were good (386 OBP)
  16. Presently at 35 Minus Pavano & Casilla Plus: Rule V pick & (2) SP Free Agent Even: Trade Span or other player on 40 for SP Four Spots: Hicks, Gibson, Hermsen, open Open - could be Blackburn if he pitches well in ST or other.
  17. Twins web site indicates Vavra and Ullger will be minor league instructors.
  18. Off the subject - from ESPN's Keith Law What kind of numbers could Chris Parmelee put up in a full season? He seems to be a different player over the last year and a half. Make sense to trade Morneau and give him a shot? [h=6]Klaw (2:09 PM) [/h] I am not a big believer in Parmelee or Plouffe, sorry. I don't think either guy is an average everyday player.
  19. Carroll has been the best middle infielder. It should be Carroll and Florimon to start next year. Dozier and Escobar to start in AAA.
  20. Obviously Ryan doesn't believe in Slama so he would rather keep him as an insurance policy for next year. If Ryan adds Slama to the 40 and then he takes him off then another team only needs to keep Slama on the 40. If Ryan keeps Slama off the 40 then another team must use the Rule V and keep him on their 25. It'll be interesting if Slama doesn't get claimed in the Rule V, will Ryan invite Slama to MN ST.
  21. Parmelee, Manship, Vasquez, Carson, and Escobar. Gardy probably would like to learn more about Escobar. Dozier hasn't earned to go back. I like others would like to see Slama but the Twins FO think otherwise.
  22. Pre-load position depends on the individual (see Youkilis). Everyone's different. More important is the hands position at the load (right before the swing occurs). I believe Revere was talking about the hands position at load.
  23. The comparison from a few years is interesting. The analysis is off. Earlier this year Plouffe was late getting his foot down. Too early - nothing behind swing Too late - dead fyi - nobody teaches the high elbow any longer - the elbow has to come down to 45 degrees before the swing starts.
  24. Benson threw a bullet from deep left center to throw out Rhymes at 3rd. I was in the section near 3rd base. It wasn't Dinkleman. Parmelee can really rake. Parmelee, Casilla, Doyle, and Plouffe looked good.
  25. Every pitcher instruction is leg up, then down and out. Parker - I'm sorry but you couldn't be more wrong about pitching motion. On the video, Giolito seems to have great form.
