  1. I just have to wonder what Ben's future is with the team. If there is one position the Twins have depth at, it is CF. In the quest for the 5 tool player - Ben only has one - speed. All of the other prospects have more of an upside. I would not be surprised to see the Twins deal him for a prospect. He could be a nice asset to a team looking for defensive replacement and a pinch runner late in the season.
  2. How great is it to see it work like it is suppose to - Mauer sets the table and Morneau clears it. Meanwhile the Hammer is bringing back memories of Mr. Thome. Fun stuff.
  3. At least I can see the method to the madness now, whereas under Bill Smith there seemed to be more of a knee-jerk, aggressiveness to his decisions that were focused on winning now and not so focused on the future. I think everyone would agree that we were pleased on some level with his efforts - trading for Rauch and Fuentes to strengthen the bullpen as well as getting Capps to close as a final piece of the puzzle. However, I think the Twins formula, as represented by Terry Ryan, has been largely successful. As a result, I am willing to give him time to see what happens.
  4. I love how people are down on Mauer after 4 games. Using the same logic we should be talking about the historic season Josh Willingham is going to have. He's on pace for 162 RBI and 81 homers - watch out Barry Bonds.
  5. Bottom of the 6th, Twins down 2-1. Mauer, Morneau, Willingham due up. 3 up, 3 down. Top of the 7th, Angels score 3 to ice it. Blackburn did all he could to keep us in this one and the big bats did not deliver when it counted. Meanwhile Wilson steps up his game to records the big outs. There, in a nutshell, is the difference between a winning team and losing one. Big bats are going to have to find a way when their starter gives them 6 solid innings.
  6. I agree that internally the team's expectations are realistic and that the real goal is to prepare for the future, while doing their best to compete and put a good product on the field. If the team had spent $110 million again with the expectation that they could make a run at the Tigers, it might be a different story - but that is clearly not the case. The bigger question is whether Gardy wants to be the manager of a team that is rebuilding. If it is clear that the team is out of contention by July and the decision is made to sell off veterans and go with a youth movement, then Gardy will need to ask himself whether that is something he wants to be a part of.
  7. I think if anything this stretch will test the character of the team. The real measure might be how they bounce back in May. My sense of the club is that the combination of veteran leadership and the classic one game at a time philosophy will result in a bounce, eventually. I have been most impressed with the quotes coming from Willingham and Doumit - they seem to represent the Twins' philosophy well. We'll see how it translates.
  8. Is this a joke? They have played one game.
  9. To me, the key is a healthy big 3 - DSpan, Mauer and Morneau approach their typical numbers (and stay healthy), this lineup will hit. If not, then it will drag the whole lineup down. What I love about the Roster is that there is new blood and established leaders. The combination of young players with major league experience with hopefully a healthy core will be fun to watch. Not being weighted down with contracts also could provide the opportunity to find a missing piece later in the season.
  10. It is interesting to think about how Morneau DHing opens up the roster. That single move allows the team to carry the two catchers, promote a solid major league ready player (Parmalee), and clarify Mauer's role as a catcher and backup first baseman. I like Burroughs as a left handed option off the bench - much better than past options (Tolbert).
  11. I'm also guessing that with only two catchers and the announcement about Morneau DHing that Mauer is not going to see much time as a DH, but I wonder about Doumit. Do we expect that he is the starting right fielder and the back up to Mauer or will he be a more traditional backup catcher - with Plouffe in right?
  12. So is it pretty much the case that Revere will be a late inning defensive replacement for Willingham, pinch runner, and backup to Span? Looks like they don't need or want him in right at all.
  13. I think there are no two ways around it, Revere's days in a Minnesota Twins uniform are numbered. Denard Span is the CF of the present and future and Revere is not equipped to play anywhere else. Throw in the spring that Benson has had and there is really no future for Revere. The Doumit-Parmalee-Plouffe experiment in right will provide all of them the opportunity to prove their worth to the club in the long haul, but the bottom line is that I expect Benson to be in the Twins OF no later than next year and likely sooner if the Twins fall out of the race.
  14. Guess you feel a little silly about posting this blog now.
  15. Way too early to get worried. 14 preseason games to play and two weeks until opening day. I will be worried if he is hitting below .200 on April 30.
  16. Disagree with you on this one. It was pointed out that in 2001 the A's won 102 games and finished second to the Mariners who won 116. The Twins would have been the second wild card with 85 wins. Does it really make sense to have a winner take all one game playoff when the entire game is built around the 3-game series and the need to go deep into your pitching staff to win? Under this format we are playing an entirely different game than the one that is played for the other 162 games. For the record, I hate the playoff format with days off. I think we should play the game the same way in the fall as we do in the summer. Doesn't make sense to me. We should go to a 32 team league with 8 four team divisions.
  17. For the Love of the Game in a landslide. The lack of chemistry between Costner and Kelly Preston was awful. The back and forth between the game and his personal life was annoying. Anyone who says The Natural or Field of Dreams are not good baseball movies are just taunting those of us who are true baseball fans.
