  1. Great piece from Jim Mandelaro on Beresford's parents, Ian and Chris, visiting the States this month to see their two sons. http://www.democratandchronicle.com/story/sports/baseball/minors/2014/07/11/red-wings-parents-visiting-australia/12557883/
  2. Just picking nits, but wouldn't it be turning out that the Yankees got a Teheran for roughly $28 million? They get nailed with a 100% penalty tax, right?
  3. It has been a tough couple weeks for Beresford. His slash line the past 10 games is .205/.271/.250 for an OPS of .521. Ouch. Now sitting at .271/.325/.336 and .661 on the season.
  4. You're summary is accurate. The inside the park home run came about when Jason Kanzler dove for a line drive and missed it. Good effort, but more prudent thing to do in the 4th inning of a scoreless game is to pull up, give up 1 run and hold the batter to a single, still with 2 outs. One of the HBPs and his lone walk were the last two batters Eades faced. Effectively used his breaking ball as an out pitch most of the evening. Not a bad start at all. Just a bad result.
  5. Is Watts still around? I don't know. (All together now...) THIRD BASE!
  6. Exactly. It's interesting how the baseball gods just seem to sit and wait for opportunities to provide lessons in humility just about the time everyone in the world starts telling you how good you are. Those lessons make good players better in the long run.
  7. Wow, poor JD Williams goes 4-4 with a HR and is on base 5 times and can't get a TD Hitter of the Day award cuz someone else had 5 hits in twice as many games? Sheesh... that's what we call a bad beat in the poker room!
  8. I agree and look forward to seeing some Kernels in Target Field soon. For now, I'll have to be satisfied with driving up to watch Kernels alum Jose Berrios in the Futures Game on Sunday. Should be fun.
  9. Sorry for not responding to comments earlier. My head was pretty much buried in budget work at the office today and just now noticed the post had been promoted. Thanks for responding to a couple of those questions, Seth. I agree Mildren was more ready than Stewart. If anything, Slegers might have been a closer second among the rotation members for consideration of a promotion. I think we've discussed this before, but I just don't expect Stewart to do anything but finish out the year in CR. They're still clearly limiting pitches with an eye toward making sure his arm is not overtaxed through the end of the season. SPs promoted to Ft Myers are more likely to be the college guys or pitchers with multiple pro seasons already.

  11. The merry-go-round that is a minor league team's roster continued to spin over the weekend in Cedar Rapids as the Kernels saw two pitchers promoted to high-A Fort Myers, one infielder put on the 7-Day Disabled list and two new pitchers arrive from Elizabethton. The new pitchers, right handed starting pitcher Chih-Wei Hu and righty bullpen arm Jake Reed, were in uniform for Tuesday night's series opener with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, won by the Kernels, 15-5. The two will replace starter Ethan Mildren and co-closer Todd Van Steensel on the Kernels' pitching staff. http://knuckleballsblog.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/ArteagaMildren.jpg Kernels pitching coach Ivan Arteaga and pitcher Ethan Mildren Mildren has been dominant through his most recent pair of starts, throwing seven shutout innings against Clinton on June 29 and duplicating that feat on Independence Day against Beloit. He allowed just seven hits and three walks over that 14-inning stretch. This article was originally posted at Knuckleballsblog.com Van Steensel had not been charged with allowing a run, earned or otherwise, in his last seven appearances for Cedar Rapids. Overall, he put up a 1.30 ERA covering 34.2 innings of work in 23 appearances in a Kernels uniform. If early impressions mean anything, Reed will be a capable replacement for Van Steensel in the Kernels bullpen. The 21-year old righty, drafted in the 5th round out of the University of Oregon last month, threw nothing but shutout innings for the E-Twins in his first six innings of work this season. He struck out eight batters and held opponents to a .053 batting average.against him. That scoreless streak, however, came to an end in Reed's first appearance in a Cedar Rapids uniform on Tuesday night. Reed gave up one unearned run in an inning of work on Tuesday night when the first batter he faced reached on a two-base error and came around to score on a subsequent single. Reed recorded his first strikeout as a Kernel to finish the eighth inning. The man with the biggest shoes to fill with the Kernels, perhaps, will be Hu. Cedar Rapids has struggled to find consistency from their rotation and Mildren was just beginning to provide much needed leadership in that area. Hu will get Mildren's spot in the rotation and should get his first start for the Kernels on Thursday against the Rattlers, in front of the home crowd. Like Reed, Hu was off to a strong start for Elizabethton. The Taichung, Taiwan, native had time to make just three starts for the E-Twins before being promoted. He was 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA. He threw six shutout innings of two-hit baseball in his last start, striking out nine batters in the process. After watching Hu throw a bullpen session on Tuesday, Kernels pitching coach Ivan Arteaga pronounced the 20-year old Hu, "ready to go." "His fastball moves a lot and his slider's got good rotation," Arteaga added. "He really competes, according to the reports we got." The Kernels played Tuesday a man short on their roster as shortstop Engelb Vielma has been placed on the 7-day DL with concussion symptoms and no corresponding roster move was immediately announced. Manager Jake Mauer indicated to media after the game that infielder Logan Wade would be re-activated from the DL on Wednesday to replace Vielma. 13. Just for the record, it wasn't Anderson's peer with the Pirates that noticed this supposed pitching flaw of Worley's, but Jeff Benedict, whose formal title is, I believe, "special assistant to the GM" with the Pirates. Sort of a roving pitching instructor. He was interviewed for, but did not get, the Phillies' pitching coach gig in the off-season. So, really, this is Terry Ryan's fault, for not hiring a "special assistant to the GM" to fix pitchers. On the other hand, if Anderson is indeed sent packing after the season, it appears that there's a genius in Pittsburgh looking for a pitching coach job.
  14. It would actually be extending a 3-day weekend in to a 4-day weekend, since we're coming up on Friday. Even then, I'd do it if it were just me, but I'll have 6 members of my family making the trip and most of them don't have the schedule flexibility that I do, unfortunately. Next time!
  15. Jake Mauer said after the game that he expected Vielma would have to sit out a week, the standard 7-day DL requirement for anyone with a head injury. Nothing official, that I'm aware of, as of Monday night, however. Kernels had an off-day today.
  16. Stewart is on what seems to be a pretty strict 70 pitch per start limit, intended to keep his workload under control and get through an entire full season. The result of that is that, even when he's pitching pretty well, he doesn't necessarily get through 5 full innings, which means he can't get a "win" in those games. Of course, it doesn't keep him from getting nicked for a loss if CR is behind when he exits. Long way of saying, yes, it's good that these folks are looking a bit deeper than W-L record anyway.
  17. Unfortunately, I'll be in town for the weekand and the Futures Game, but will head home on Monday, but it sounds like a lot of fun!
  18. Mildren is a starter and he's been strong lately. He's not going to wow you with 100 mph fastballs, but he's been making steady progress and getting deeper in to games. Van Steensel (another Twins Aussie) has been doing a lot of closing and getting a lot of Ks. If you get out to see him pitch, don't wait until he's on the mound to start watching him. Check out his entrance and all his little idiosyncracies on and around the mound. He's a hoot (and a great follow on Twitter, if you're not already following him).
  19. Of course, this is counterbalanced somewhat when I think of how much fun it will be to make fun of the Yankees when they still suck even after blowing all that cash on 16 year olds who never make it past A ball. And given the way the dice rolls on these kids, that's probably at least as likely as the chance a slew of these guys do pan out for NY
  20. I'm not sure you can say the system favors foreign players, just because they are on the free market and not a slotted draft. At least it doesn't always faver them. Take Lewis Thorpe for instance. It's arguably too bad Thorpe hadn't grown up in the US because, if he had, he'd have just graduated HS, been drafted in June, and would have gotten top money for a bonus. No system is perfect. Any system set up by a cartel like MLB owners, in negotiation with a players union with 100% loyalty to existing MLB players, not the young players (foreign or domestic), will be flawed. If the other 29 owners are willing adopt systems that let the Yankees treat any penalties like a speeding ticket, then they get what they deserve - a very uneven playing field when it comes to competitive balance. Those owners aren't really "hurt," though, because they each get a pretty hefty share of the financial pie, whether their teams ever win anything or not. The only people really screwed over are the new/minor league domestic and foreign players who have their compensation levels artificially restricted because they have no representation when the rules of the game are established.
  21. Reading the McDaniel article pretty much confirms what I half-suspected; that one reason the Yankees were willing to shoot the moon this year is that they think an international draft will be implemented, negating the two years of penalties they would otherwise be subjected to. IF baseball does adopt an international draft and they don't find some way to enforce the back end of penalties for what the Yankees are doing, it will simply confirm that MLB is being run under the philosophy that whatever is good for the Yankees is good for baseball. But then we've all pretty much known that's been the case under Selig all along.
  22. I kind of felt the same way, but since the link to the box scores have been included, if I'm curious about someone not mentioned specifically, some basic stats about his performance in the game are available. That's been very helpful, I feel.
  23. I read the article earlier, as well. All I can say with certainty is that I saw both guys play a year ago in the MWL and there is absolutely no way I would trade Buxton for Correa today. I really don't get the "make up" edge that supposedly goes to Correa. I know nothing about that aspect of his game/character, but I'd put Buxton's make up against any young player's.
  24. I was glancing at the PP's site this morning and noticed I didn't see the Twins Daily MiLB links in the left column any more. Am I just not looking in the right place?
  25. I've been wondering why these teams appear so nonchalant about blowing out their pool numbers this year. Is it because this year's crop of 16 year olds is considered so superior than what they typically see? No idea, but seems unlikely that it is so much better that they're better off signing several top players this year than being allowed to sign even one top player for the next two years. Are they gambling that, somehow, they'll be able to get the penalties eliminated? Seems unlikely, too. Whatever the thinking, it seems premature to conclude that the system isn't working just because a handful of teams were willing to far exceed their pool levels. We can see the benefits of doing so immediately, but we won't witness the price they pay until next July and the July after that, when the Twins and others who are staying within pool levels will not have the Yankees and others to compete with at all for top international signings.
