  1. I would debate the point that the Twins have much of a chance to have an Orioles-like season. First of all, the Orioles basically tied math to a chair and beat it senseless last season leading to them finishing 11 games better than their pythag. Secondly, the Orioles are built around a bunch of young players entering their prime who were seen to have exceptional ceilings coming up. Guys like Adam Jones and Matt Wieters may have beat their pre-season projections but putting up 4+ win seasons at this age would have been expected of them a few seasons ago.The Twins, on the other hand, have a team that will be carried by players on the wrong side of 30. The thing about watching a team without a lot of talent is it gives you the opportunity to root for the little things to go right. Mauer and Morneau might still be fun to watch. It'll be fun to see if Willingham can repeat his 2012 numbers. It'll be fun to see what happens if Hicks is brought up. There are plenty of interesting things to watch for in 2013, I just don't think the W-L column is going to be that great.
  2. Raw power was starting to show prior to 2012, great range, had a terrible 2012 that led to a diminished outlook for his future.
  3. LOL. This could be very true. Indians, Royals, and White Sox are all hovering around it each other it seems.
  4. The guys at the top of the rotation get more starts since you can take advantage of off-days to give them more rest. This is a very bad idea.
  5. I wouldn't worry too much. They are two very different prospects. Hicks has a lot more going for him than Benson. I think it's a lot better to start Hicks in AAA, let him see some borderline major league pitching, and then bring him up later if he's successful and still looks like he can help the team. It's better to give the non-prospects a chance to show what they can do at the major league level and not mess with the development path of Hicks.
  6. The Indians have a better offense than the Twins with decent defense. Their rotation is probably as good as the Twins. The Royals are average to above average in left field, center, third, short, first, DH, and catcher. They made some improvements to their rotation, too. The White Sox are pretty much the same team as last season, which is still better than the Twins. This season for the Twins is more about getting the chance to bring up some minor leaguers and put the team on track for being better in 2014 than it is about immediate success. I find the 68 win projections to be very accurate.
  7. I appreciate Seth's contributions to the site, and want to say congrats on having your post picked-up by MLBTR. I know it was pretty late when this article was posted but,if other people aren't going to edit these things, then I will: There is a typo in the third sentence (drooped instead of dropped) of the article. This is not a great way to grab your audience. You told me in the first sentence that Gutierrez was lost to the Cubs, so you don't need to tell me again in the third sentence. There is probably a way to re-word these sentences to clarify why they lost him (waivers never come up in this paragraph) and to make it easier to read. I think you meant to say shoulder "surgery"? Also, this paragraph could be combined with the previous one since it is essentially just an extension and that last paragraph was only 3 sentences long. You should probably mention what, "the Twins were likely hoping to sneak Gutierrez through...." Why do you need the second sentence in this paragraph? You give a somewhat complicated explanation of Rule 5 draft-eligible players in the second sentence and then give a better explanation in the third sentence. You could use the same approach as you did in the third sentence when explaining international signings who should now be eligible. Sorry to sound harsh, I just would like to see these articles look a little more professional and like someone put some effort into editing them. I was just a little upset to see this many problems with something appearing on StarTribune.com. I don't feel it represents Twins Daily well.
  8. I agree completely that, long-term, Span is much more likely to stick as the every-day center fielder than Revere due to Revere's limitations with the bat and his arm. Span is a very good center fielder and Revere doesn't provide a lot of improvement out there. What the Twins would really miss would be the difference between Span and Revere's arm in center. I still hold out hope that Hicks can turn things around and learn to hit a little. An outfield of Span-Hicks-Benson could be a really good thing. I think that's where the team is heading in the short-run (pending Hicks' development) and so there's no reason to get too attached to Revere.
  9. I still don't really consider Cabrera a third baseman because I think, as the season wears on, Feilder and Cabrera will end up splitting most of their time between 1B and DH if Inge hits well enough to justify his glove at third. I think, based on what's above: Cabrera Moustakas big gap Lonnie Chisenhall Valencia Jack Hannahan Brent Morel I rank Chisenhall higher than Valencia but it could be very very close. This season, it's going to be all about what adjustments Valencia makes and what he learned last season. Chisenhall was the #25 prospect per Baseball America entering the 2011 season....
  10. I hate to be "that guy", but you finished your article with the line "Who will be the best first baseman in the AL Central in 2012? You may want to edit that. Just trying to help...
  11. You're not taking the rest of the league into account. The Tigers have 2 of the best hitters in baseball in their line-up to go with a very above average starting rotation and some decent other pieces. They are probably a 90 win team. The 2008 Twins were an 88 win team. If '08 is the best we have to hope for, I don't think the Twins are making the playoffs.
