  1. Don't quite know where to put this, but... Stuifbergen is taking Alex Meyer's spot in the NB rotation tomorrow night. MiLB has Saturday and Sunday's starters as Darnell and Baxendale. Does anyone know whether this is just the 'normal' skip a ML pitchers turn in the rotation to keep their overall innings down? Or is it an injury (or promotion)?
  2. Hi Seth, I know he's 22 and it's his third year at low-A, but I think Tyler Grimes is finally getting it together! Do you realize that after another horrendous April (OPS <.600), he is now up in the rarefied air of Byron Buxton at .957 (even better after tonight)? I think any catcher who can put up those kind of numbers needs to be adopted, so could I? Do you have any inside info on his catching abilities that I could include in his page? Thanks, TRex
  3. Switch the name to Sano, and I would consider it. But Buck has a chance to impact the game in so many different ways.
  4. I also do not want a catcher at #4, but I disagree about the Twins being able to identify and sign good defensive catchers Don't forget that Javier Valentine (10 year career) and Chad Moeller (11 year career) were solid backstops.
  5. Seth, did you start blogging before DTFC, or has it really been that long ago that I first read your minor league prospect material?
  6. I posed that question to Seth on the ML daily page, and he thought we should put on the brakes a bit... I had forgotten that he started the last year in low-A ball, and only pitched 22 games at high A. So maybe a promotion to AAA after only 22 games at AA is going a little fast.
  7. Hey Seth, In 11 May appearances, Tonkin has not allowed an earned run through 12.1 innings, amassing 20 strikeouts with only 3 walks. How long do you think they will wait to call him up to AAA (or perhaps directly to the Twins)?
  8. Well, if one of the things that is meant by 'inconsistent' is that he has trouble throwing anything other than a fastball for strikes... that is just not going to work in the Majors. Gibson has terrific fastball command, and 'could' have pitched his two shutouts with just that pitch (which would explain why they let him throw so many pitches). I wish we had that kind of info to make judgements on, because with it I think the degree of incredulity (and insinuations the the FO is incompetent) would be much lower.
  9. After putting up one of the hottest 10-game stretches in recent memory, AB Walker has come back down to earth. In his last 10 games, his triple-slash was just .129/.200/.226, with just a single extra-base hit (HR), and a K-rate of >35%... not all that unusual for a slugger coming off a power binge. After playing 43 games (161 AB), he is still hitting .284/.335/.580, and leads the league in HR (10) and RBI (45) and is second in total bases (92) to teammate Byron Buxton.
  10. It's hard to find positives in Meyer's pitching line from tonight (6.2 innings, 6 hits, 3W, 5R, 3ER). However, he seemed to regain his composure and managed to retire 8 of 9 batters after his terrible 4th inning (after which I think he was already over 80 pitches). One other very interesting stat from Meyer tonight is that the Binghamton hitters were only able to get 4 balls in the air all night! That's right, Meyer faced 30 batters, and the only balls in the air were a pop out to 3rd, a sac fly to center, a single and a double! He got 20 outs, 7 by strikeout, 12 by ground out, and the aforementioned sac fly! I have to learn to stop going through his starts on Gameday pitch by pitch because I go apoplectic over how many strikes are called balls. They must not actually use the same pitch f/x setup as MLB, or the umps just cannot figure out Meyer's knuckle-curve.
  11. Maybe this is a minor point, and if I am wrong about the rules I hope someone corrects me, but... While I do not think a September call up for Sano is even close to a 50/50 proposition, it is important to remember that 'options' are only used when a player is sent down. Therefore, if Sano does receive a look in September, we wouldn't have to use an option until (or if) he is sent down next spring. And at that point we can call him up and send him down any number of times during the 2014 season... and who doesn't think we would call him up at some point in 2014 anyway? In that scenario, we may need to send him back down and would use an option anyway. So to re-cap, if Sano is called up in September, we will need to create a spot on the 40-man roster a year earlier than we would have to, and could potentially lose the 40th man on the roster. In addition, a September call up may mean that Sano's three year option clock will start in 2014 rather than possibly 2015, which would mean he has to be established in the majors by the start of the 2017 season instead of the 2018 season (snicker, snicker). Sano may not be called up in September but, if that is the case, it will be for baseball reasons and not because of the 40-man roster, the option clock, or salary arbitration/free agency concerns.
  12. Was removed before the game today due to injury. You can now surely drop him from any consideration for #4.-3rd Inning Stretch ... or greatly decrease his signing bonus! If the Twins have him at #4 on their board because they think he can recover his Cape Cod form I would mind signing him for $750,000 under slot.
  13. Well, as long as you don't care who disagrees I guess the case is closed... good thing we don't have to waste any more space arguing with you!
  14. I might have missed the blurb about him keeping the weight off... The comparison I have always heard is that he is built like a linebacker. I was going to comment that the still photos and videos I have seen make it look like his man-muscles hadn't even filled in yet, and can you imagine how much power he will have when that happens! So perhaps it is time to appeal to anyone with firsthand knowledge to describe Mr. Walker's build.
  15. Do you think he was finally healthy?
  16. I think one of my favorite things about Walker is that he is that he is a stat-sheet filler. He is not just an all-or-nothing type hitter. He has only 1 HR in 9 May games, but has still managed to generate a triple slash of .349/.364/.628 by hitting 5D and 4T. He also was successful in 3SB attempts. The only negative is that he did not have a single walk... but if you are hitting .350 I say 'grip it and rip it'!
  17. Another important consideration for drafting under slot is where you pick. For example, if you use last year's draft, and assume you are drafting someone 3 slots above where they are they are predicted to go... Correa worked out great last year for the Astros because they gave him around the bonus for slot 4 and saved $2.4 million. However, if the team drafting #4 had selected a consensus #7 guy, they would've only saved ~1.2. A similar situation in 2013 (i.e. over-drafting by ~3 slots) would save the team drafting #1 $3.3 million while the Twins would only save $1.25 million. While this would have been enough to cover the difference for McCullers last year ($1.24 million), it would still tie your hands in negotiations.
  18. I really think you have a problem with the whole 'years of age' thing. Both Upton brothers were born in August, and were within 3 weeks of turning 20 when they debuted in the majors. In addition, BJ Upton was only 17 when he graduated high school and got drafted. Buxton was 18 when he graduated and was drafted, there is nothing you can do about it. The Upton brothers both started in low A ball the year AFTER they were drafted, just like Buxton. And BJ Upton didn't necessarily 'bounce back and forth' to the minors, he spent more time in the minors AFTER his debut than he did before (240 games). I get that YOU want him on a faster track than any prospect in history, and you are entitled to have any opinion you want. However, all you have been doing is pointing to other's progressions, and not telling us why Buxton should go faster. What do you know or have you read that justifies this?
  19. River Song...
  20. Another blurb about Walker from BA, this time from Tuesday's prospect notebook: Tuesday Prospect Notebook: Matt Davidson Gets Back On Track - BaseballAmerica.com Adam Brett Walker, rf, Twins. Walker’s power made him a third-round pick in last year’s draft, and the 21-year-old hasn’t disappointed in taking on the hostile environs of the low Class A Midwest League. The Cedar Rapids right fielder homered for the seventh time in 28 games last night, moving him into a tie for the MWL lead. The rest of his game is less refined, but after a slow start, he’s managed to hit .338/.400/.688 over his last 77 at-bats. He’s hitting .303/.361/.596 on the season overall and leads the MWL in RBIs (32).
  21. Let's also remember that, by the time any objective measure is completed after the end of the season, Hicks, Arcia, and Gibson will not (likely) be on the list.
  22. Are we sure the runner from third touched home before the celebration started this time ?
  23. From the Gamecast, it looks like Buxton's 'bomb' was an inside-the-park job! Any first hand reports of whether he was Guzzie-like around the bases?
  24. Funny how.... haha funny, or like your avatar?
  25. They are listed as right down the middle !
