1. As we turn the calendar page from 2012 to 2013, it’s also time to turn the page and look forward to the 2013 season. The Roster & Payroll page has become a pretty popular destination for TwinsDaily.com visitors, so I’ve decided to make some changes to make it MORE informational (can you believe it?) but also more reader-friendly. The 2012 page has been skinned down to the big-league payroll and is still viewable here (link not available yet...). The meat and potatoes – now the 2013 page – can be found here (also in the Blue Ribbon on the Homepage). SOME CHANGES: First off, I always found it beneficial to be able to look at player and see the levels at which he’s played over the course of the last couple of seasons. The issue with the old page was that once a player joined the Twins his development path was taken over by his current salary. To combat that, I’ve divided the big league club – or for now, the Spring Training roster – into two different parts: a payroll part and an actual Twins roster with development paths. The payroll part will house all of the 40-man roster as well as non-roster invites until they are sent down. There are also projected salaries next to all players who I loosely project to be on the Opening Day roster (more on that later). Players that are projected to be on a different roster have that listed as well. Below the Total Payroll, you’ll find contract details – options and incentives that could change payroll at some point. Right now, the payroll includes projected contract renewals. This is to give you a sense of what the Opening Day payroll will be. Once you get past the Payroll section, you’ll find a table that will contain the numbers of all of the players, coaches, etc. If you’re heading to Spring Training, you might find this helpful. If you’re watching on TV, you might find this helpful. If you’re into numbers like I am, you just think it’s cool to have. As players are sent down, I intended to change their color so that the active roster (from above) will be in black. If players have been in camp before, I’ve used that number. If their most recent number isn’t available, they’ve been bumped to the end and will be moved when I learn their new number. After that you’ll find all the 2013 roster projections. I added symbols next to left-handed hitters (*) and switch-hitters (#) and managerial staffs after each roster as well. A few caveats here: While extremely fun – it’s impossible to do – so I’ve limited the guess work as much as possible. Details to follow… TWINS Middle Infield – I don’t believe that Escobar, Dozier and Florimon will all make the Opening Day roster. In fact, my best guess is that Carroll starts at 2B, Florimon at SS and Escobar as a utility guy. That leaves Dozier in Rochester. Of course, the roster doesn’t reflect that because as of now the perception is that they all have equal chances to make the team. So they’ll stay there together until I know differently. Outfield – Two guys, huh? For now, yeah. There is going to be a 4th outfielder (in addition to Parmelee in RF). I don’t see Hicks breaking camp with the big club. If I had to bet on who that guy is going to be right now… I’d guess it would come from the group of Clete Thomas, Wilkin Ramirez and Brandon Boggs. But since all of those guys are NRI’s, I’m not going to project them on the big-club. They are AAA-players until they prove otherwise. Starting Rotation – Right now there are five guys. I’d be shocked if that’s the starting five on Opening Day. I anticipate Pelfrey being on the D.L. I anticipate Gibson on Rochester’s D.L (I think he'll stay in Fort Myers throwing bullpens for six weeks to help limit his innings and eliminate his innings in the cold weather). Harden, Blackburn, Deduno all have a shot, but, again, they are all NRIs. Bullpen – There is no way the Twins have those nine guys in the bullpen on Opening Day. Three are out of options. One is a Rule 5 guy. So those four need to appear here. That leaves Burnett and Fien. Odds are they are Opening Day bullpen guys, too. So they’re all going to be listed here for now. RED WINGS Once you get past the fact that there are 38 guys listed, I think it’s pretty simple. The Twins will cut some of these guys, some will start at AA, some will be in the Major Leagues and some will have phantom “knee tendinitis” injuries. Some names that I could see moving down (since I already gave you some names I thought might move up): Nate Hanson, Aaron Hicks (so he and Benson can both play CF) and a bunch of pitchers like Caleb Thielbar, Bryan Augenstein, Bobby Lanigan, Daniel Turpen, Andrew Albers and Blake Martin. I think the “winner” of Deibinson Romero and Mark Sobolewski moves up to AAA and the other stays in New Britain. It makes sense to me anyway. ROCK CATS Besides the extra guys listed, I like how this roster turned out. Obviously some guys might not start the year here – Nate Roberts? Alex Meyer? - but if I had to guess independent of how all the other rosters are configured, this is where I’d put these guys. If a player ended the year in Rochester, I put them on that roster because I figured they’re going to camp with the opportunity to win a job there again. MIRACLE The two names that are questionable here are Danny Santana and Michael Tonkin. Both could move up easily. The middle infield is especially unclear. Does Rosario stay at 2B? Does Michael play SS? Does Michael move up? There are extra bodies that need to play. I didn’t want to make that guess on January 1, so I put them there together because, again, independently of each other I think they all belong here. You may disagree and say that Danny Santana is the shortstop in New Britain and Adam Bryant plays shortstop for the Miracle. I wouldn’t argue. Bullpens are pretty fluid. Tonkin could be here or in New Britain. KERNELS Again, a lot of names here. The Twins have held guys back in EST until the weather warms up and I bet we see that practice again. The guys that I listed here are guys that I don’t think will play for Elizabethton at all. Take J.O. Berrios, for example. I don’t think he’ll be in Cedar Rapids in the beginning of April, but I expect he’ll be there by the end of May. Byron Buxton could go either way. Revere and Hicks didn’t start the season in Beloit, but joined later. Buxton is better than either of them, but has already been pushed more than the other two were. The catching situation is fluid. Where does Grimes start? Wickens could move up clearing shortstop for Goodrum (which in turn would definitely bump Santana to AA). There are a number of outfielders listed as well. Not all will start the year in Cedar Rapids, but I’d expect them all to see time there. The pitching staff is quite deep too. Not being 100% sure which guys will get the chance to start makes it hard to project the destination, let alone the rotation and bullpen. Melotakis could relieve in Fort Myers. Bard could start or relieve in Fort Myers, but he’s been hurt, so who knows? EXTENDED SPRING TRAINING/DSL All of the other names in the system except for those in the Dominican Summer League. EST guys have a projected destination. I still haven’t added the DSL guys just because that’s such a crapshoot. The international signees are still at the bottom followed by unsigned free agents. As always, I want feedback. Is there something posted incorrectly? Is there something missing? I want this to be usable for everyone, so I’m always welcoming others’ opinions.

4. News of the Twins Prospect Handbook will probably start popping up soon. So to help with that appetite, you will find a couple profiles that won't make the final cut... because the players got cut. Wang-Wei Lin – OF – (6/28/88) Acquired: Signed as F/A in Oct 2006 from Taiwan 2012 Team(s): Beloit Snappers 2012 Stats: .232/.343/.334, 14-2B, 5-3B, 4 HR, 30 RBI Lin has spent the previous three seasons in Beloit and regardless of what happens, we know he won’t be heading there again. Lin spent three injury-plagued seasons in the GCL before being promoted to Beloit in 2010. He had shown improvement throughout his first two years and a quick look at his 2012 numbers would suggest he really struggled (though his BABIP dropped nearly 60 points from 2011 to 2012 while his batting average only dropped 45 points). Maybe he was just really unlucky. Unfortunately, as an organizational-type player who hasn’t been able to climb the ladder, you have to show something to stick around. Defensively, Lin can play all three outfield positions and be average. He’s a good athlete who knows how to work a count and take good at-bats. At nearly 25, Lin will head to spring training knowing that his time with the organization could be limited. Fort Myers or bust. Joshua Hendricks – 1B – (11/9/91) Acquired: Signed as F/A in Jan. 2009 from Australia 2012 Team(s): Elizabethton Twins 2012 Stats: .222/.292/.333, 9-2B, 0-3B, 1 HR, 13 RBI Hendricks was signed by Australian scout Howard Norsetter in January 2009, but didn’t make his professional debut until the summer of 2010. He began that season with the GCL affiliate as a catcher. He finished that season with a batting average of .091 (4-44). He struck out 17 times and didn’t draw a single walk. At 6-3, 220, Hendricks was moved to first base following the 2010 season. In 2011, Hendricks got 160 at-bats in 47 games and batted .275 and cut his K-rate to 18%. He didn’t take a lot of walks, though, or hit for power which resulted in an OPS of .666. There was hope that Hendricks might be able to play his way up to Beloit in 2012. Instead, Hendricks returned to Elizabethton where he was passed up by many of the 2012 draft picks. He only played in 29 games, appearing 21 times at first base and batted only .222 while seeing his K-rate increase to 32%. Hendricks headed back home to play winter ball - and is struggling - though he is having his best winter of the three he’s spent there. Hendricks hasn’t demonstrated the power that is necessary if he is going to stick at first base. He hasn’t demonstrated the hit-tool enough to stick in professional baseball. The Twins are always patient with their Australian prospects, but you can only wait so long for guys to develop. Hendricks will have to make the Cedar Rapids roster to remain in the organization.

6. Though there may be moves yet to happen, you can view the updated Spring Training Roster here. Some comparisons between last year's spring training roster and this year's: Pitchers - Last year the Twins brought in 33 pitchers, this year the number is currently at 34. Catchers - A year ago there were eight catchers officially invited and one added in the weeks leading up to spring training. This year the Twins have five on their 40-man and have invited four more. Omissions - All hitters that remain in the Twins system from 2012 who finished the year at New Britain or Rochester were invited... with the exception of two players: OF Evan Bigley, INF Nate Hanson. The exclusion of Bigley comes as somewhat of a surprise, given how much Tom Kelly raved about him last year. Numbers-crunch - To my knowledge, the Twins flat-out cut six players either during or at the conclusion of camp who were invited to big-league camp. (That doesn't include Terry Doyle who was sent back to the White Sox.) There are 91 players either on the 40-man, list of non-roster invites orremaining players (mostly pitchers) who completed last year at AA or AAA. With the numbers of catchers, it's possible that one could possibly start the year at Fort Myers, but we won't count on it. At the MLB, AAA and AA levels, there are 75 spots on the active roster. That leaves 16 players without active spots without considering ANY promotions from the year-end Fort Myers roster. While every year is different, looking solely at what happened last year, that doesn't bode well for those pitchers that pitched at AAA or AA last year that weren't invited to big-league camp. (If you're wondering who those guys might be clink the link at the top of the page to view the rosters of those teams.)

8. I read that as well. There's a reason he's not a GM anymore. I read some other stuff previously and connected Morneau to the Orioles (for any one of there group of young, major league-ready pitchers). He could have connected those dots pretty easily too, but didn't. Would you do it? Morneau and $7m for Matusz (Super-2, four years of team control). Would the Orioles need more cash?
9. These aren't necessarily moves that I'd make over the course of the next few weeks, but these are the moves I think we'll see. I think the Friday non-tender deadline will roll around and the news we've all been waiting to hear "The Twins will non-tender Drew Butera" won't come. I don't think it will be because Butera adds a lot of value, per se, to this team, but I do believe it allows the Twins to keep Mauer and Doumit in the lineup every day and it allows Chris Herrmann to play every day in Rochester. I do think that Butera will come back on a near-minimum, non-guaranteed contract. Remember, even though Butera can't hit himself out of a wet paper bag, he does handle a pitching staff really well... a pitching staff that - more than likely - can use all the help it can get. Plus, that one open roster spot the Twins will need will come elsewhere. I think (well, now we know) the Twins will outright (or lose on waivers) Tommy Field. While Field does offer some middle infield depth, he's a classic example of what the Twins have tried to do lately... add depth when other teams are under a roster-crunch and sneak the guys through waivers when rosters around the league are maxed out. (Sorry dudes, it didn't work this time.) I think Denard Span will be traded. Denard Span might be my favorite Twin. He's a professional on and off the field and example of what's right when it comes to being a role model. Long-range plans, though, suggest that Span isn't necessary and he is valuable. (The contract that Bossman Junior just signed might make Span even more valuable.) TR could probably trade Span right now and get a starting pitcher in return, but *unlike* Johan Santana, D-Span's value isn't going down tomorrow. With his contract, especially next year and 2014, he's going to look like more of a bargain. With all that being said, I think the Twins wait to see where Bourn signs (Philadelphia? Washington? Tampa Bay? Someone else?) and sells Span to the team that feels they needed a center fielder the most and will give the most in return. I don't think the Upton signing with Atlanta hurt the Twins at all. Not at that price. I think the Twins do what they need to do to clear Lester Oliveros off of the active roster in advance of the Rule 5 draft. Considering Oliveros is recovering from elbow surgery, there probably has to be some sort of injury settlement, but I would guess that would more formality than obstacle. That's two openings - plus a potential third if Butera is non-tendered - and depending on what is included in a Span trade, possibly more. I think the Twins sign Brett Myers. It doesn't excite me at all, but if we can cross off 190 innings at the back of the rotation for, say, 2 years at $9 million, there's worse things. I wouldn't be crazy about it, but I wouldn't go crazy thinking about it either. I think the Twins pass on Francisco Liriano. I was always anti-Trade Frankie, but this ship has sailed... unless he offers to pitch for $2 million plus incentives. I think the Twins look at the list of non-tenders and find a guy they really like and get him early, like Monday morning early. I also think whoever it is makes us all say in disgust, "Really!?" I think the Twins sign a couple of major league guys to minor league deals - maybe a guy like Jack Hannahan (to compete with Plouffe) as well as another pitcher or two to compete for a spot in the bullpen, if not the rotation. I think the Twins draft a starting pitcher-like player in the Rule 5 draft and say "He's going to fight for a spot in our rotation." I think we'll know that he won't win a spot in the rotation. I think the Twins will try to get long-term deals done with Jared Burton and possibly Ben Revere. I could see Burton signing a 2-year, $5 million deal with an option for a third year. Revere could get a Span-like five year deal, which makes more sense than you would think, considering it could potentially cover four arbitration years. (Revere is in line to be a Super-2 after next season.) At the end of next week, I will probably be off on all of these thoughts - but at the very least - I think the Twins will have a decent starter to pair with Diamond towards the front of the rotation, another starter or two that can at least fill the spots on paper and hope that they can still add another decent starter (or two) in December or January. And Drew Butera. Yeah, I think the Twins will still have Drew Butera. image from blackgreeklife.blogspot.com
10. Yeah, spent a brief amount of time with the Twins 2004.
11. Even though we’ve suffered through a painfully uneventful first half of November, there is still a lot left to do before the end of the month. The Twins will have to have their 40-man roster set in advance of the Rule V draft by Tuesday. At this point, there are really only two slam-dunk additions and they are OF Aaron Hicks and SP Kyle Gibson. After those two the picture becomes much less clear. In the history of the Rule V draft, the vast majority of players taken are pitchers. After that you’ll get a spattering of utility infielders and outfielders, usually guys that can serve a purpose as a pinch-runner. The Twins will consider adding players such as SS/2B Danny Santana, SP B.J. Hermsen, RP Michael Tonkin and SP Adrian Salcedo. There are obviously others in the discussion, but those, in my mind anyway, are the four guys most likely to be added in the upcoming days. Danny Santana split time with Levi Michael in the middle infield for the Miracle this year. His prospect status is on the rise after Baseball America included him in their Twins Top 10. My belief is that the Twins will add him, though the re-signing of James Beresford and addition of Jason Christian – both guys who will fit on the ladder near Santana – could be viewed as insurance policies “just in-case” Santana isn’t protected and lost. At the end of the day, though, the Twins have been extra protective of their international infielders. Both Deibinson Romero and Estarlin DeLosSantos were added unnecessarily in the last handful of years, spent a year on the 40-man roster, removed a year later and remained in the organization. B.J. Hermsen is a somewhat local product who has advanced through the organization to become the answer to the question “After Gibson, who is the best starting pitching prospect that could help the Twins?” That’s more an indictment of the system than a complement to Hermsen. While Hermsen fits the Twins mold as a strike-throwing, big-bodied, innings-eating prospect, his addition to the 40-man roster isn’t guaranteed. In fact, I would be more surprised if the Twins protected him than exposed him. His saving grace might be that he is exactly what the Twins look for in a pitcher, they lack depth in the upper levels and have more spots available than normal. When it’s all said and done, it will be extremely hard for a team to draft Hermsen and keep him on their roster. His role would be a low-leverage, long-innings guy for a year before being optioned down to continue his development. That’s a lot of work for a guy whose ceiling is that of a #4 or #5 starter. Michael Tonkin, in my opinion, needs to be considered ahead of Hermsen for the simple fact that a team could take him and stash him. Though he doesn’t have any experience about the A-level, he is currently pitching in the Arizona Fall League. This is essentially an audition to be added to the 40-man, not only for the Twins but all the other teams. His strikeout rate in the AFL (4.5 K/9) hasn’t mimicked what it was with the Snappers and Miracle (12.6 K/9), but his WHIP is lower. I think the Twins will feel he did enough over the past month to warrant concern of losing him and add him. Adrian Salcedo started 2012 in the same company of Gibson and Hicks. But instead of cementing his name on the 40-man roster, he spent 2012 dealing with injuries. In his 30 innings of work this year, his walk rate (4.7 BB/9) was 2 ½ times higher than it’s ever been in his career. No team will invest a 25-man roster spot on him, so that makes the decision extremely easy. Adding Hicks, Gibson, Santana and Tonkin would give the team 36 players on their 40-man, which will allow them to be aggressive in the free agent market (hopefully) but still be able to make a selection or two in the draft. *** The other thing that continues to happen is the Twins agreeing to minor league deals with, not only their own players, but players from around the league. It’s impossible to know exactly what the Twins are thinking and who they are considering, but I’m going to list ten guys that I think would be worth considering with an emphasis being placed on two positions that lack depth: Pitchers and Third basemen. Josh Bell, 3B, Diamondbacks – The power-hitting switch-hitter was a former top prospect in the Dodgers organization before being traded to the Orioles and bouncing around the last few years. With last year’s AAA and hi-A 3B leaving the organization, there is definitely an opening for someone that could push Trevor Plouffe a little bit. Andrew Brackman, P, Reds – A former 1st round pick, Brackman had a very good 2010. He struggled in his AAA-debut in 2011 and his subsequent move to the bullpen. He started five games in AAA in 2012 and was brutal. Despite being nearly 27, he’s still relatively new to pitching and at 6-10, there still may be room to project. Adrian Cardenas, 2B, Cubs – It wasn’t long ago that Cardenas was BA’s High School Player of the Year. Even more recently he was a Top 100 prospect. For a team that gave both Ray Chang and Michael Hollimon a two-year trial, they could do worse than to see if Cardenas, who has hit over .300 the last three years (in AA and AAA), could help the organization. Josh Fields, 3B, Dodgers – Fields finished 7th in AL ROY voting in 2007 as a member of the White Sox. He’s bounced around, including a stint in Japan in 2011. He spent 2012 in AAA and had an OPS of almost 900. This almost-30-year-old could add depth and competition to the organization. Drew Naylor, P, Phillies – Though he never was considered a great prospect, Naylor began coming into his own in 2010. He then missed all of 2011 recovering from Tommy John surgery. In his first year back he wasn’t great, but wasn’t terrible either while making his way back to AA. His 2012 was cut short due to a shoulder injury. The Aussie is a big guy (6’ 4, 235) who will still need time to recover but could still potentially have a shot at cracking the big leagues by 2013 (at age 27). Naylor hopes to prove he’s recovered by playing this winter with the Brisbane Bandits in the Australian Baseball League, though he’s yet to pitch. The Twins should be watching closely once he does. (My minor-league free agent "personal cheeseball.") Yonata Ortega, RP, Diamondbacks – Ortega has always walked a lot of guys, but he has a high-90s fastball. If he didn’t walk so many, he could probably compete for a spot in a major-league bullpen. Of course, there is a reason he’s a minor-league free agent. (re-signed with Cubs) Blake Parker, P, Cubs – Parker had an excellent minor-league track record and used that to make it to the big leagues in 2012. His problem was the elbow discomfort that ensued. He missed the majority of the 2012 season and was outrighted off the roster before electing free agency. Parker has the stuff to get strikeouts (though he walks more than you’d prefer) and could make a contribution in a major-league bullpen this year. Ryan Rowland-Smith, LP, Cubs – “Hyphen” hasn’t seen the Bigs since being bludgeoned in 2010. The next year in the minors wasn’t any better. But the Twins do a better job than anyone scouting Down Under, so if this Aussie has anything to offer, the Twins would know. Matt Tuiasosopo, 3B, Mets – While it’s very true that Tuiasosopo can’t hit; he’s a very athletic, competitive player that could provide leadership (and depth) at a position that needs it. The only defensive position he didn’t play in 2012 was catcher, so there’s that too. Nick Weglarz, OF, Indians – With the Twins losing Rene Tosoni, Matt Carson and Clete Thomas, they’ll have to replace the outfield production somehow. Weglarz has had a couple injury-filled seasons and can be a productive hitter and corner outfielder if he regains his health and is given an opportunity. 12. Even though we’ve suffered through a painfully uneventful first half of November, there is still a lot left to do before the end of the month. The Twins will have to have their 40-man roster set in advance of the Rule 5 draft by Tuesday. At this point, there are really only two slam-dunk additions and they are OF Aaron Hicks and SP Kyle Gibson. After those two the picture becomes much less clear.[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] In the history of the Rule 5 draft, the vast majority of players taken are pitchers. (My minor-league free agent "personal cheeseball.") (signed by Rangers) Yonata Ortega, RP, Diamondbacks – Ortega has always walked a lot of guys, but he has a high-90s fastball. If he didn’t walk so many, he could probably compete for a spot in a major-league bullpen. Of course, there is a reason he’s a minor-league free agent. (EDIT: Ryan Rowland-Smith was selected by the Twins in the 2004 Rule 5 draft, but was returned to the Mariners during Spring Training.) Matt Tuiasosopo, 3B, Mets – While it’s very true that Tuiasosopo can’t hit; he’s a very athletic, competitive player that could provide leadership (and depth) at a position that needs it. 13. I think the debate isn't "where" they start... but "whether" they start.
14. I think the OF situation is more a product of the numbers. There are seven legitimate outfielders on the roster already, plus Parmelee and Herrmann. Add to that the year-round-trade-Span speculation, is-it-time-to-move-Willingham talk and trying to figure it all out becomes messy. I'll put Mastro's name in pencil as the 4th OF. Ben Revere's name is the only name in pen... and I don't even want to guess at what position. Burnett appears to be short of Super-2 status, he's still young (only a couple months older than Tyler Robertson and two years YOUNGER than Kyle Waldrop) and has an option left. I think his spot in the organization is safe. De Vries is interesting. His stuff obviously isn't scary, but his peripherals were more similar to Scott Diamond's than anyone else. His WHIP was lower, his K/BB was higher. He did allow more home runs, but was really still (re)adjusting to a starting role. With that being said, now that teams have seen him, he might get drilled. He did regress as the season progressed, but he's a guy who threw 157 innings. He threw 148 in 2007 and hadn't thrown more than 91 since 2009. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I think he did enough to at least get a chance to win a rotation spot and if he doesn't, head to Rochester and anchor that rotation.
15. As the Twins enter their second straight offseason following 90-plus-loss seasons, I find it really hard to write a "blueprint". There are many directions the club could go to improve their team. Without any real idea which (if any) of those "directions" are feasible, I'm going to break it down into a series that previews upcoming roster moves. So far this offseason - besides the news that a few coaches wouldn't be returning - the only news has been the re-signings of a handful of six-year free agents. While those announcements may continue to trickle in, I'm going to turn the page to the next (and first) significant moves of the offseason: The outrighting of 40-man flotsam. The roster plus the use of the 60-day DL means the Twins technically have 42 men on the 40-man roster. Semantics. Players 41 and 42 are both free agents-to-be (Scott Baker and Carl Pavano), so it's really only the other 40 we need to be concerned about. Each year, between the middle of October and when rosters have to be set in advance of the Rule V draft (mid- to late-November), teams will remove some players from their roster to create wiggle room to sign free agents, add players who will be Rule V eligible and allow for flexibility to add players through the Rule V draft. So what's next? The Twins taking a look at the guys on the 40-man roster and deciding which guys should stay and which guys should go. "Go" is a general term, though, because many of those guys will clear waivers and be sent outright to Rochester. They'll then be invited to Spring Training. The only difference is that they are not on the roster. Let's take a look: I think many will hope that Drew Butera will be removed from the roster. While I don't necessarily agree with that thought, his time wouldn't come until it's time to offer arbitration. Same as Alexi Casilla. It appears to me that all the other infielders and catchers are safe enough to make it through this first roster cleansing. The outfielders, though, are another story. There are two names here that I'm sure will be discussed thoroughly - Matt Carson and Darin Mastroianni. Neither player figures much into the Twins plan of 2013, but both offer benefits. Carson offers some pop from the right side of the plate and Mastroianni adds center field depth, solid defense and speed on the basepaths. Both still have options remaining, meaning they could stay on the roster, but play for Rochester - which is needed anyway. What's not working in their favor, however, is the number of outfielders currently on the 40-man (7) and the need to add Aaron Hicks. While Carson was signed as a minor-league free agent last year, Mastroianni was claimed off waivers from Toronto. To me, that is a suggestion that Carson might be easier to pass through waivers. I also value Mastro's speed and D over Carson's bat. Regardless, I fully believe that one of those outfielders (if not both) will be outrighted off of the roster. The pitching staff is a little more difficult to predict. Scott Diamond is obviously safe. Liam Hendriks still has room to grow. I feel that Samuel Deduno will get a chance and that P.J. Walters at least did enough to earn a look in Spring Training. Cole DeVries - the Minnesota native he is - probably gets a little more leash. That leaves Esmerling Vasquez. Vasquez adjusted well to being a starter, but since he's out of options it could benefit the Twins (and Red Wings) for him to be a non-roster invite. The hairy part is that he's been outrighted once before, so he would have the option of becoming a free agent. If the Twins get the feeling that he'd elect free agency - and they want to keep him around - that might be enough to keep him on the roster. Personally, I would take my chances. This opens up a spot for Kyle Gibson. The bullpen is a crapshoot. There are a lot of younger, newer arms that are taking up roster spots. It's just impossible to draw a clear line between who is worth keeping and who isn't. I've seen enough of Jeff Manship to risk losing him. Even though he's out of options, I think he'd clear waivers and stay in the organization (if the Twins want him). Luis Perdomo was a minor-league free agent that didn't exactly close the minor-league door behind him when he came up this year. Knowing what he offers, I'd rather give some other six-year free agents a shot. I'm not sure how it would work to make a move with Lester Oliveros (who is out recovering from Tommy John surgery), so I'll leave him on. Deolis Guerra and Carlos Gutierrez are both roster "bubble guys", but for now I'll leave them on as well. So what's the next bit of Twins news I expect to hear? I expect to read that the Twins are outrighting Matt Carson, Esmerling Vasquez, Jeff Manship and Luis Perdomo. I would imagine that all would clear waivers and head to Rochester with an invitation to Spring Training. After this happens, the Twins will start adding guys to their 40-man roster. Some guys that will definitely be added are Hicks and Gibson (who I previously mentioned). B.J. Hermsen should also be added. Adrian Salcedo (on his way down) and Josmil Pinto (stock up) are others that may have been in the discussion.

17. The Twins lost to the Mariners this afternoon and Denard Span was placed on the disabled list. Placing Span on the DL was a curious move, since rosters expand in a couple of days, and there are rumblings that he may be shut down for the rest of the year. If you've noticed that the "Rosters & Payroll" page hasn't been updated in a couple of days, I apologize. Hopefully by Monday it will be back up-to-date. Let’s take a look around today’s action: ELIZABETHTON 2, DANVILLE 9 (SEMIFINAL GAME 2 – SERIES TIED) Box score The E-Twins jumped out early tonight against Danville, leading 2-0 heading into the top of the fourth inning. Brett Lee, who only walked 12 batters all season, walked three batters with two outs and the flood gates opened. Chris Mazza replaced Lee and allowed a double. A throwing error by Niko Goodrum allowed the seventh, and final, run of the inning to score. Lee, who had a rough outing last Friday night as well, allowed six runs over 3 2/3 innings. Chris Mazza struck out four and allowed an unearned run (in 2 1/3 innings). Ricardo Arevalo struck out four in two scoreless frames. Goodrum’s second throwing error of the night resulted in two more unearned runs, these on Luis Nunez’s record. The Elizabethton batters managed only five hits: a single by Byron Buxton, a home run by Max Kepler, a single by Adam Walker, a double by Travis Harrison and a single by Candido Pimentel. Danville and Elizabethton will face-off tomorrow night for a spot in the Appy League finals. ROCHESTER 3, BUFFALO 10 Box score The winning streak is over. But even though the season won’t end with a playoff appearance, I think we’d all consider this season a success. Tsuyoshi Nishioka and Ray Chang (who Denard Span may still not be able to tell apart) each had two hits. Chang had a double, as did Brian Dinkelman. Eduardo Escobar added a triple. P.J. Walters threw 93 pitches in a five-inning rehab start. He gave up four earned runs and struck out five. Deolis Guerra allowed a run in two innings. Bobby Lanigan gave up five runs in two innings. A few of these guys may be joining the big club soon. Matt Carson, who didn’t play today, will join the Twins tomorrow. NEW BRITAIN 5, TRENTON 3 Box score Aaron Hicks hit his 13th – and final? – AA home run tonight. Will we see him in the Twins outfield on Saturday? Oswaldo Arcia, now batting .324, had two hits and two runs. Will we get a chance to see him too? Chris Colabello drove in his 96th run of the year. B.J. Hermsen (probably) cemented his spot on the 40-man roster with a six-inning, three-run performance. He’s now thrown a career-high 161 innings. That is probably the reason he won’t be a September call-up or participate in the Arizona Fall League. Hermsen, who doesn’t have great strikeout numbers, will be in the mix for a rotation spot next spring, though he will probably spend more time in the minors. Blake Martin and Dakota Watts combined to pitch three scoreless innings. FT. MYERS 8, CHARLOTTE 7 (10 INNINGS) Box score Kyle Knudson’s one-out walk-off single in the 10th was the highlight of tonight’s high-scoring affair. Danny Santana and Danny Rams each hit home runs. Danny Ortiz added two hits. Steven Liddle had a double. Madison Boer pitched the first six innings and allowed seven runs on nine hits. He struck out four and didn’t walk any. Nelvin Fuentes allowed only one hit over four scoreless innings to pick up the win. Fuentes, who seems to be injured just as often as healthy, had a very good 2012. BELOIT 9, WISCONSIN 2 Box score Congrats to Miguel Sano and Corey Williams who were named post-season MWL All-Stars. Sano missed his third straight game due to what is believed to be a minor ankle injury. It sounds as though he will be back for the playoffs. Eddie Rosario and Tyler Grimes provided plenty of offense in his absence. Rosario doubled twice and now has 30. Grimes homered and doubled. He is still batting below .200, but he does offer the occasional pop. It should also be noted that he didn’t have any errors. Kennys Vargas and “Our Favorite” AJ Pettersen had multi-hit games. Cole Johnson scattered seven hits over four innings, only allowing one run. Taylor Rogers picked up the win striking out six in 2 2/3 innings. DJ Baxendale and Mason Melotakis each struck out two. This Snappers bullpen is definitely ready for the postseason! --- Players of the Day for Thursday, August 30, 2012 Pitcher of the Day – Nelvin Fuentes Flickrhivemind.com Hitters of the Day – Tyler Grimes Beloitdailynews.com --- A Look Ahead – Friday, August 31, 2012 Schedule Rochester vs Buffalo – RHP Kyle Gibson (0-1, 12.00) New Britain vsNew Hampshire – TBA Fort Myers vs Charlotte – TBA Beloit at Wisconsin – LHP Jason Wheeler (14-6, 3.44) Elizabethton vs Danville – RHP Hudson Boyd --- If you have any questions on the Twins minor league system, players, teams, etc., leave them in the Comments and we’ll try to answer them! 19. With the Twins being so bad again - and with the amount of guys being promoted from AAA over the last two years - I think we'll see the organization add a dozen or so six-year free-agents that know they'll get an opportunity to play in the majors. The team has done a good job the last two offseasons in this department and I'd expect that trend to continue. That will bulk up both the bullpen and AAA's rotation and lineup.
20. Scott Diamond had a rough first inning (33 pitches) before getting through a scoreless second. After Joe Mauer was plunked by Roy Oswalt, Diamond threw over Josh Hamilton’s head and was immediately ejected. Ron Gardenhire was also ejected. This put the Twins in a bad place. Anthony Swarzak got through the fifth and also gave up a few runs. Jeff Gray struck out two in two scoreless innings. Jared Burton came into a tie game in the 8th and promptly gave up the lead… and then the wheels fell off. [PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]Before the game, Josh Willingham was scratched with a stiff neck. The good news of the day was that Denard Span was back in the lineup. And he had a really good game. Down on the farm Pedro Hernandez has been placed on the D.L. with a lat strain. Taking his place in the Rochester rotation will be Kyle Gibson, who will start Saturday. It is great news for Gibson; while it sounds like Hernandez will be shut down for the remainder of the season. Let’s take a look around today’s action (as well as see where each team is relative to the playoffs): ROCHESTER 5, LEHIGH VALLEY 3 Box score Clete Thomas’s RBI single in the 8th proved to be the winning run for a team desperately in need of runs and wins. Chris Parmelee had two hits, including his 17th home run. Wilkin Ramirez added his 12th home run immediately following Parmelee’s. Tsuyoshi Nishioka added a single. Shairon Martis made it into the eighth and recorded on out before being lifted. His final line was six hits, a walk, a run and four strikeouts. Luis Perdomo, who blew the save, ended up getting credit for a win by retiring five batters, three by strikeout. He gave up a home run. Playoff update: With 11 games left, the Red Wings have closed to four games back in the Wild Card standings. While being that far back is not insurmountable, the bigger hurdle is that they see three teams in between them and the Wild Card leader. Even finishing 8-3 or 9-2 might not be enough (and that point is moot if the offense can’t score any runs). NEW BRITAIN 6, NEW HAMPSHIRE 9 Box score It was a tough loss for the Rockcats. The bats were alive, but they came up short. Steven Hirschfeld got roughed up over 4 1/3 innings. He gave up eight hits and seven runs. He walked two and struck out four. David Bromberg struck out four in 2 2/3 innings. Edgar Ibarra gave up a run in an inning. Chris Herrmann led the offense from the leadoff position. He homered and drove in three runs. He added a single. Chris Colabello, Nate Hanson and James Beresford all doubled. Oswaldo Arcia went 0-for-5 with two strikeouts. Playoff update: The Rockcats trail Trenton by six games and now trail Reading for the Wild Card spot by one game. New Britain has games remaining against only New Hampshire (last place) and Trenton (first place). All of Reading’s 11 remaining games come against sub-.500 teams, though their final four games are against Portland, the hottest team in the Eastern League. FT. MYERS 7, BRADENTON 3 Box score The Miracle jumped out to a three-run first and never looked back. Both Daniel Santana and Levi Michael had three hits. Santana had a double. Michael also walked and stole a base. Danny Ortiz added two hits, one double. Overall, it was a good offensive attack. Pat Dean pitched five innings. He struck out three, walked two and given up three runs on six hits. Clint Dempster gave up two hits in two scoreless innings. Ryan O’Rourke struck out three in two scoreless innings. Playoff update: Officially, Fort Myers is still alive for a playoff spot, but the stars would have to align perfectly… and even then it would be tough for them to make the playoffs. BELOIT 1, PEORIA 6 Box score The Snappers never really came out of their shells for today’s game. Eddie Rosario (double) and singles by Kennys Vargas, Wang-Wei Lin and Jairo Rodriguez accounted for all of the offense. Matt Tomshaw held his own tonight. He made it to the seventh inning, allowing seven hits and four runs (three earned), walking one and striking out five. Mason Melotakis struck out three, recording five outs. Zach Jones allowed two runs (one earned) in one inning. Playoff update: The Snappers secured a playoff spot thanks to finishing second in their division in the first half of the season. They will go on the road for game 1 and host games 2 and 3 (likely against Clinton). They have split the season series against the Lumberjacks 7-7. They swept them in a four game set at home, but were later swept in a 3-game home series. Clinton has been playing great baseball in the second half of the season. ELIZABETHTON 6, PULASKI 4 Box score J.O. Berrios is human. He allowed five hits and two runs in five innings. He even allowed a home run. He still struck out six. Tyler Duffey struck out two in two scoreless innings. Chris Mazza allowed two runs in two innings. Max Kepler went 3-for-5 with a triple. Adam Walker went 2-for-5 with a triple. D.J. Hicks had a double and two RBI. Jorge Polanco drove in two runs, despite having no hits. Playoff update: E-town has clinched a playoff berth. They will start their playoffs next Wednesday night and (hopefully) you’ll get to read about them reaching the Appy League Championship series next Thursday in my write-up. GCL TWINS 4, GCL ORIOLES 0 Box score A shutout win keeps the GCL-based team in the playoff hunt. Randy Rosario pitched his best game as a professional, throwing seven innings, striking out nine. Austin Malinowski completed the shutout striking out three in two innings. The bats got off to a hot start in the first inning: Both John Murphy and Aderlin Mejia hit their first home runs of the season – and their professional careers – back-to-back. Joel Licon drove Mejia home with a sac fly in the 6th to add an (unnecessary) insurance run. Jeremias Pineda, Bryan Haar (double) and Jose Ramirez added hits. Playoff update: The GCL team hasn’t been mathematically eliminated from the Wild Card race, but the easier path for them is to win their division. They currently trail Boston, who won today in convincing fashion, by one game. Each team has two games left… against each other. Their playoffs literally start tomorrow, with a sweep the Twins advance.
