  1. The belief is that the Twins want to see how Vargas does in a lineup without Sano (so far, so good). At some point, he'll go up with Hicks behind him and Rhodes behind Hicks. With Rodriguez playing so well as of late and Smith offering OF versatility, it could be a while before we see those things happen. Talent-wise, probably. If the Red Wings have a need, though, I would guess that Vasquez is the next in line. Right now the Wings have six starters and Blackburn working his way back. It wouldn't surprise me if Trevor May spends the rest of the season in AA.
  2. Not only the team Player of the Week, but also the International League Pitcher of the Week.
  3. Obviously we know about Buxton and Gibson being promoted. Today we learned Logan Darnell is going from NB to Rochester to replace Gibson. Esmerling Vasquez has been released. Likely more moves to come...
  4. People have been high on Arcia for a long time. You have to remain cautious about guys after the Appy League, cause numbers are inflated. Then he didn't spend much time in Beloit before he went to FM. He raked there, but kind of always was in Hicks' shadow. He raked at NB, but Hicks turned it on and Colabello was a feel-good story. He's always moved so quick too. The other thing is he's been consistently good in almost a Mauerish way. You stop singing a guy's praises when you come to expect great numbers from day-to-day to month-month and year-to-year.
  5. That would back Rochester into a corner. You lose both guys that could start today and then back that up with potentially taking Gibson or Worley. I get that its about the Twins, but why do that when the result is probably pretty similar?
  6. Without the DH this week, will they add another bat or pull up another reliever (Tonkin? Does May make his start today?) before adding another starter later in the week?
  7. Could have been Albers, probably had to do with 40-man being full. You DFA a guy in Rochester to call another up and they are short two guys minimum. Should gain some clarity when Gardy comes on ESPN1500 shortly.
  8. Gibson and Worley couldn't start today, having just pitched.
  9. ...and will start today, per Morse. Lower back strain for Pelfrey. I will look up to confirm, but I believe Pedro threw over 90 pitches four days ago. So expect a heavy dose of Josh Roenicke today too. Edit: per Mackey tweet Hernandez threw 62 pitches on Wednesday.
  10. The Twins are going to send Diamond down for a month... not because he's been brutal, but because it would mean an extra year of team control. Send him down for six and he'll avoid super-2 status after next season too. Win, win, win.
  11. It seemed like longer than a month...
  12. Virgil Vasquez was sent to New Britain, who needed a pitcher after Baxendale was DL'd. In other news, the Elizabethton roster is out. A couple points of note: Tim Shibuya, who was the Appy League pitcher of the year two years ago, is back on their roster. He hasn't pitched since the middle of the year last year in Beloit. Dallas Gallant, who also pitched last year in Beloit, is on the roster, but it's listed as "rehab". Gallant has battled elbow issues for a while now. Angel Mata has been released from the organization. Unconfirmed, but the belief is that it was off-the-field related. Rory Rhodes is back after spending a lot of last year in Beloit. Javier Pimentel is the youngest position player on the roster (recently turned 19). He was one of the biggest bonuses of 2010 and will likely play a lot at 3B. Dereck Rodriguez will be making his Appy League debut. Josh Burris and Hein Robb, who have both made appearances for the Kernels, are in E-town. Six recent draftees are on the pitching staff, including C.K. Irby, who is listed on the 7-day DL. The staff also includes four 19-year-olds: Andre Martinez, Felix Jorge, Randy Rosario and Yorman Landa. E-town's Appy League title defense begins tonight.
  13. The only other unsigned guy in the Top 25 rounds - Brandon Bixler - is in Elizabethton, so after they get those three done, they'll have signed their first 25 picks. That's an accomplishment by itself.
  14. Nope. Picks after round 10 are capped at $100k and aren't a part of the bonus pool. Unless they exceed $100k, then the excess counts against the pool.
  15. I'm getting a lot of good stuff on Gonsalves... Teams had high hopes his curveball would develop, it didn't... and then the suspension. Other scouts were convinced he wouldn't sign if he fell out of 2nd round. The Twins area scout, Leavitt, I believe, had no signing concerns and now those other scouts are "shocked" when they are finding out he has already signed. Like any draft pick, he might not work out... but the Twins got a steal and Gonsalves is going to have a chip on his shoulder. It might take him a while... but for $700k, you role that dice every time.
  16. He will. This year is just a bonus really.
  17. The Twins think he'll add velo and will be able to develop a slider (been told that more than once). I've also heard they think some of his developmental stuff was due to "lack of coaching".
  18. Eades will probably be eased into like they all are, but I could see him fitting into the Cedar Rapids bullpen for the stretch run and being on the "Baxendale Plan".
  19. Per sources, Molina got $150,000. 11th rounder. Twins now have $55,900 to play around with (and three of the top 10 unsigned).
  20. Callis tweeted that Gonsalves signed for $700k. Good deal for the Twins.
  21. IMO, Stewart goes to the GCL and spends most - if not the rest - of the year there. He's not as advanced right now as Berrios was last year (his ceiling is significantly higher). He should be in Cedar Rapids rotation next year, though possibly not right away. He'll be on an innings limit... he's thrown 40 so far, and will probably only throw 40 more this year. Next year we're probably looking at something between 110 and 130.
  22. TR just said Gonsalves signed for "in the vicinity of slot". If that's the case, what a steal. At this time last year, the Twins had a late 1st round grade on him. He has the potential to develop into a top-of-the-rotation starter. Wow. Can't wait to hear the actual bonus.
