  1. I would not waste my time. He was last in MLB in 2011. He had a .666 OPS. Missed 2009 and 2010 seasons. In 2008 his OPS was .509. In his last three years in Japan he has put up an OBP of .344. BA .262. Struck out 3x more than BB. For those suggesting it is just a minor league deal.... Kubel had a .196 average and .571 OPS in spring training and made the team last year. Bartett's OPS was .245 in spring training and he went north with the team befoe quitting. Now I get that is the GM's issue, but this is the same GM.
  2. With news that Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval have been signed by the Red Sox, I think the move would be to trade for Mookie Betts. Allegedly they are going to move Hanley to the OF. They have like six OF's.
  3. That was a great post. Good info. Great profile picture as well. That look on Kahn's face is great. When I see that look all I can picture is him saying "You guys are going to love Johnny Flynn"
  4. I am in a wait and see mode. From what I have read I am not expecting this guy in the rotation next year. But it we spend $8M over 4 years for a good reliever than that is a good deal. A lot of the international pitchers seem to have 1-2 really good years because they benefit from nobody seeing them on tape, that upside would be great for a limited commitment. However, if the early moves so far (this guy and Hunter) represent our big targets, I will be dissapointed
  5. If we are looking at a $10M commitment and he has a snowballs chance at a #3 starter, great risk/reward. Because we spent $12M on Pelfrey who had no shot. I agree with the sentiment, I sure hope this is our lotto ticket signing and not our top target.
  6. Any idea how much this signing will cost and what the post fee was?
  7. Rios has much better reports defensively. Hunter may have a better bat. But our needs our starting pitching and OF defense. So lets sign Rios if it was between the two.
  8. I should have clarified as well, he was by far my favorite Twin in the 2000's. But I still want no part of this.
  9. I agree that to not follow the team is extreme. But for me any optimism about this cerebral genius of a coach is gone (if the reports are true)
  10. I think some reason exists for the disparity in price between Schafer and Rasmus. They are about the same age. Schafer has a career .621 OPS, OPS + of 72, and 12 career HR. Rasmus has a career .751 OPS, OPS + of 103, and 116 career HR. Including seasons of and OPS + of 132 and another of 127. Two other seasons over 100. I actually think Torii and Rasmus sign about the same deal. 1-10. If he is looking to rebuild value, we could just lock him into CF all year. We have to have the least competition at CF out there.
  11. We should have signed Cuddy and moved him back to his natural position (SS). Cuddy at short stop and Hunter in LF, our two holes are filled.
  12. The only guy on the FA market I would give more than one year to would be Rasmus. I think he would be a natural upgrade/stability play in CF, then he can move to a corner when Buxton comes up. Torii is going to cost $10M that could be better spent elsewhere. We could find any number of guys for $3-4M that could platoon with Hicks and put up the same numbers offensively and be better defensively.
  13. Good point on timing. Coming out of the gates our big target is a 39 year old OF, that really should be a weak hitting DH. That is a let down.
  14. Yes. You beat me to it. The old saying, it is better to aim high and miss your target than to aim low and hit it. Aiming to not be worse than last year is the epitome is aiming low.
  15. When you have a roster of only 25 guys and 9 starting position players. Is the mentor role worth 11% of payroll, 11% of your at bats, some percentage of balls hit their way? My prejudice is that the mentor, rah rah thing is over-rated in sports in general. Probably the least relevant in baseball. I also would think this is a good idea if we didn't have a 23 year old DH that needs reps.
  16. All this noise about Molitor being this cerebral guy that sees things everyone else does not......then he pushes for a 39 year old Hunter. Disconnect seems like an under-statement to me.
  17. Seth, I am curious about the disconnect between you and Nick's comments from the 11/11 article: "What should they be looking for in a prospective pickup at this position? Well, that also seems fairly clear. Considering that they fielded the worst defensive outfield in baseball this year, the Twins should really be seeking a player who can cover ground and provide some much-needed help for the pitching staff." -Nick Nelson It seems by you saying you would not have a huge problem if we sign Hunter, you don't agree that we should make defense a priority in LF. Or do you think Torii is still a good defender?
  18. If he is open to a bench role, that would be great. But if Michael Cuddyer is worthy of a qualifying offer, then a 2 year deal for $20M to start in the NL, someone will pay for Hunters name as well
  19. My guess is Rasmus and Hunter both sign something in the 1-10 range. Rasmus provided a slightly positive rating defensively in CF and is 28. Hunters defensive ratings were very negative in a corner. Offensively, my money would be on Rasmus as well.
  20. Negative one point, for sure. The Twins should put sticky notes everywhere around the offense. OUR PROBLEMS ARE STARTING PITCHING AND OF DEFENSE The decisions this off-season should be made with this focus and nothing more. The silver lining here maybe that a 39 year old Hunter somehow has interest from 10 teams. I am hoping that he values winning over being a mentor.
  21. If he has a good year, offer him arbitration. Get him for $15M the next year or a pick if he leaves. Talent-wise, he is our second best pitcher.
  22. I think he has said before that he will get a large contract though...right? Much more than 6-60 that Abreu received. He is saying he won't live up to the contract.
  23. I would much rather have Mark B. at $19M than Hunter at $12M. Mark helps out pitching staff, an area of need for us. I think he would be our second best pitcher. It is questionable to me whether or not Torii would be an upgrade offensively over a Hicks/Schafer platoon. Defensively, Hicks and Schafer would be much better.
  24. For those who would give Masterson a one year deal with an option...I would be on board with that. We should be building towards a 2016 team, so just a one year thing doesn't do much for me.
