  1. Nishi looks like he is asking for Divine Intervention to make him a passable player. Sadly, the response he received was "No".
  2. The chain-link cyclone fence in left field was fabulous - no padding back then. Whenever the Oakland A's were in town during their 3-peat in the early 1970's, fans would take empty beer cups and stick them in the fence to spell out "Joe Rudi Sucks". Bat Day was always fun - my first ever game was on Bat Day when I was about 5 years old and I was sure the upper deck was going to collapse as everyone pounded their bats on the concrete deck. I can still feel the vibration and the whole deck moving to this day. I was just old enough to see the tail ends of Killerbrew's and Oliva's careers, the prime of Rod Carew, watched Lyman Bostock become a great hitter and Larry Hisle an RBI machine. Other than Blyleven, the pitching then was best described as "non-descript".
  3. Classic! It's hard to tell if Tony O. understood anything that was being said there... Disco Dan Ford, Hosken Powell, Willie "Dr. Strangeglove" Norwood (the yardstick which all bad defensive outfielders should be measured by) - no wonder Carew demanded a trade. There was a story from Reusse "back in the day" that after a particularly brutal game by Norwood, Mauch took Norwood's glove and set it on fire in the clubhouse. He resigned mid-August a couple of weeks after that. Don't know if the story is true but I've always hoped that it was.
  4. All-time favorites: Rod Carew and Harmon Killerbrew Current favorite: Glen Perkins (hometown guy with some swagger) Favorite pizza: The Works
  5. I have accepted that Florimon will never be much of a hitter. But is it too much to ask for him to learn how to bunt? If he could at least move a runner along or bunt for a base hit occasionally, he would become more tolerable. Even watching him try that has been...trying.
  6. On the rare occasion that I've been able to get to Ft. Myers during Spring Training, I've enjoyed watching the early workouts at the back fields to see who is getting more personalized attention and what specific things the coaches are having the players work on. Since the fences are so close to the action, you can often hear the conversations. Including updates on some of these sessions would be insightful for the snowbound masses.
  7. When factoring both Rosario and Arcia into the equation, I think one of these outfielders becomes a tradable asset - hopefully for more starting pitching (correct me if I'm wrong, but we'll have some expiring contracts at the end of 2015 that we'll be looking to upgrade). The one who remains becomes your leftfielder. I think a bigger key for this team is to make sure they are at least 3-deep with high-quality starters by '16/no later than '17 if this team is going to constructed for a playoff run for the end of the Mauer era and moving towards the prime of Sano/Buxton. None of those three will be in the rotation in '14 (unless we are surprised by a career resurrection by Hughes) - and I only see (with high probability) two of them in the system currently with Meyer and Stewart. You can make arguments for others to have that potential but they are longer shots, so we'll need to make an intelligent trade or two to complete the rotation as getting true value through FA is getting more difficult by the year due to teams locking up their good young players through their twenties.
  8. The White Castle Cheeseburger (aka Slider) would have to be Nick "Why does he always slide head-first into first base?" Punto. Seems like a good idea at the end of an evening after over-indulging, but you seriously question his worth the next morning. And the rest of the day too.
  9. One really good outing is not a trend. His last outing was less than stellar against a better hitting squad. I believe he will show flashes of dominance this year but be inconsistent due to his continued recovery TJ surgery. If he strings a few together and can dominate better teams the MudHens, that would be the sign that he's turned the corner and is ready for a promotion. Not sure Kyle or the organization is well served by rushing him before he's really ready.
  10. As much as I'd like to believe that Sano can develop into a passable 3rd baseman - in the mold of Miguel Cabrera - he sure looks he's destined for 1B (at best) or DH. Watched him take ground balls towards the end of spring training on one of the back fields in Fort Myers and it looked like he has to fight his body to get down on the ground balls. Hard to see that improving as he gets older and larger.
  11. If Deduno is 10 days behind Scott Baker in his rehab, that makes him pretty useless. If he's 10 days behind Diamond, that makes him intriguing but his usefulness is TBD. Going forward, we should rename our former pitcher Scott Banker due to the salary collected the last few years without actually pitching.
