  1. My thoughts fall in line pretty much with what Seth and Logan said. Carroll is not spectacular or special, he just gets the job done. I don't think we have to worry about him breaking down and if he hits 401 PA's $2mil doesn't seem unrealistic or a waste of money for what he does. I don't have much confidence in Florimon's bat and think Dozier has the best chance of giving us production from the SS in the next few years. Hopefully he takes the bull by the horns this spring and wins that job.
  2. Easily Harper for me. Never thought a catcher could rake until he came along.
  3. I completely agree that he is not going to have a "revelation" and be an ace. And I also should have tempered my innings pitched to 180. However if he pitches like he did last year he is an upgrade and his contract could be considered good, imo. The biggest problem with KC is that he is a back end of the rotation guy and we have no semblance of a true #1 or #2 that has any major league innings. If we had Johan, Liriano(pre surgery), Radke, and Pavano setup there probably would be zero whining about KC taking that 5th slot. I truly think that they view KC as a guy who go out there, pitch a lot of innings, give them a chance to win some games, and be a stop gap for two years until guys like Gibson, Meyer, May, Berrios, etc. are ready to jump into the rotation. He's also a veteran presence who when I dug a little into really had zero makeup issues. He shows nothing in his background where he is going to go out and show up his fielders and coaches like Marquis did. Maybe help mentor some of the young guys. I really don't have much hope for 2013 and never really bought into the hyperbole that this year isn't a developmental year. However there are many things I am looking forward to seeing this year. It's just that competing for the playoffs is probably not one of them and I am fine with that.
  4. You have no verifiable evidence of the bold type. Matter of fact if you look at his interleague starts against the AL the last 3 years he was above average in many categories. The truth of the matter is that if KC pitches like he did last year he is a significant upgrade over what we had in 2012. He should be viewed as nothing more than a competent stop gap for the next two years. If we get 200 innings of league average pitching each of the next two years $10 mil is a good deal.
  5. I said the Twins don't jettison arms. If you have guys like Deduno, Walters, etc. are taking up a roster spot at AAA they obviously are taking a spot that could be used for a younger player to try his hand. Over half of the starters at Rochester last year were 27 or older. For the most part these older arms don't have a revelation and start pitching well enough to earn a ML roster spot unless something like a bullpen switch happens. In general the Twins have been at the top for Minor League AB's and Minor League IP before promotion. I'm sure the last year or two the lack of organizational depth has contributed to this but IMO it has been this way for 15 years.
  6. Of course you aren't blocking your #1 and #2 pitching prospect. Which isn't even close to what I said.
  7. I was pro Marcum. Just the amount of butt hurt over a guy who was going to give you (possibly) one year and be gone for better riches if he pitched well is insane. I'm resigned to the fact we will not compete next year and I don't think he brought us that much closer to competing. My excitement with the upcoming year is hopefully seeing some progression out of guys like Hendricks, Parmelee, Plouffe. Hopefully some extensive time for Gibson, Arcia, Hicks, etc. Seeing how Worley does against AL hitters. And again I don't think it was about $$$. I understand we have a "projected" payroll and there are no rules saying that TR has to spend $100mil.
  8. I agree. However, we need to make sure it is for the long run. The dearth of good, young(fiscally controllable) starters has been terrible.
  9. 18 months used to be the norm and I think as we head in the future that number will decrease by a pretty fair amount. We are starting to see guys like Wainwright, Brett Anderson, and even Strasburg come back in about a year with near normal velocity and pitch well. Of course the timing of some surgeries skew in season stats.
  10. On the major league level... Not as much as the minor league level. However adding Worley and presumably Gibson for 125+ innings is going to help. We have no idea what we are going to get out of Pelfrey however if healthy he is an upgrade over Deduno and Walters. Projections are just well....projections and we can argue that all day. Pitching will be better barring injury.
  11. That's it! Wilpon needs to pay back the Madoff money and can do it this way.
  12. LOL! How you gleem that from my reply is funny to me. Yea their whole philosophy is stay at the bottom of the league in pitching. That's it. C'mon man! They don't give up on folks very easily. They don't just give up on AAAA guys in 3 months. Hope this helps.
  13. They couldn't tender Pelfrey a contract at $4mil. If Marcum hits zero incentives they would save a minimum of $600k by ditching Pelfrey.
  14. Not how the game works in mid market baseball and you know that. The Twins don't just jettison folks. I have often wondered why someone has stayed at a level too long and not gotten a shot at moving up. Lotsa times it's a philosophical issue and many others there simply isn't enough room at the next level.
  15. If you want to take my statement out of context sure.
  16. There obviously was an issue that didn't make sense to either Marcum or TR. Whether it was injury concerns, team makeup, wanting to stay in the NL we will probably never know. I was all for signing Marcum in the start but the lack of interest by many teams made me leery.
  17. Quit thinking just AAA. We all know that depth chart is thin. How do you fix that? By promoting from within or drafting players which wouldn't have a roster spot if the likes of Devries, Hendricks, Deduno, Walters, etc. are camped out at AAA.
  18. Actually it went down further than 86. And what happened in 08'? He blew out his elbow. I was for signing him but it isn't anything to get butt hurt about. His upside was a trade chip for a decent prospect.
  19. It's trickle down my man. If you have guys like Hendricks, Deduno, Walters, Devries, etc. sitting at AAA how won't they hold guys back if there is no need for a guy to take their roster spot? And as I stated there is nothing wrong with Marcum's upside with us is his being spun for a prospect. It's not about how much money we have. Never has been with the Twins. If that is your thoughts maybe follow the Yankee's Red Sox, Dodgers, etc. It's more about if it makes sense.
  20. When was the last time we payed a starter $12+ per that wasn't named Johan? Maybe if there was one on the market for $8-10 per they may have bit. Go look at what some of these guys got. I would have rather kept Baker than sign Marcum if it cost $6 mil plus. I like Marcum but two things happened last year: He hurt his arm/shoulder and his velocity fell to 86 mph when considered healthy. Those are not awe inspiring #3 traits.
  21. We really don't have an idea if Marcum was interested in coming here or even if the Twins made an offer. Granted I was on the bandwagon to give him a whirl but I also was weary because of his arm injury history and a large drop in velocity. We need to be honest with ourselves and understand if we have a true #1 or #2 it isn't going to come through FA. They will be home grown pitchers. I think we also need to be resigned to the fact that until the talent in the minors is balanced from A to AAA that we will have guys like Pelfrey, Correia, etc. in this rotation. The possibility of this being changed is very near and I think they are laying the ground work for it with the trades and last years draft. We are not a contender this year and I don't know if the value of Marcum's 3-5 extra wins is worth holding back some of the younger pitchers or if he would even add up to an attendance spike. His value would have been as a trade piece IF he stayed healthy.
  22. I would have been all for Haren. I realize what Marcum has done and I am not trying to discredit his success. He has been better than average, I just don't consider him a 1 or 2. I however believe he isn't going to get any better. Diamond pitched better than average last year. His first half was well above. Whether the league started to catch up to him or he wore down I'm not sure. It will be interesting to see how he is this year and I will admit I have not looked hard at his secondary numbers. Worley's starts in 11' and 12' until his bone chips were well above average. He shows the potential to be a 2 or 3. I haven't seen a scouting report on Gibson that hasn't labeled him as a potential 2 or 3. I'm too lazy to look them up but he has plus stuff. Like I said he is unproven and many things can happen. All 3 are 25-26 years old with room to learn and get better.
  23. LOL! You seem to think they spent $5mil on him. If it went good and he stayed healthy you would have been slobbering over your monitor on how great a deal it was. If you don't think they would take a $850k risk like that year in and year out you are crazy. Probably was covered by insurance anyways.
  24. When has it been any different? If we have a true 1 or 2 it is going to come through the farm system. The best we could be looking at in the market is Marcum and he is a #3 IMO. I think Diamond was better than average last year. Worley has shown to be better than average. By all accounts Gibson has better than average stuff. We have some talent it is just unproven. I would have loved to have swung a deal for Haren or Sanchez. It just isn't the Twins way so I don't expect it.
  25. I have zero clue why half you folks think $4-5 mil is expensive for a non-arb eligible starter. It's not. Look at the 2012 salaries. Mighty few starters pitching 150+ inn that make less. Pelfrey is fine at that price, imo. Maybe they are sour on Bedard because he is always hurt and has had attitude trouble in the past. With the chances of us using many young players they might not want to subject them to someone like that. I would also like to see Marcum added however, I think it is unlikely.
