  1. Trade Parmalee? For What? If the Twins give up on Parmalee anybody in MLB who has any interest will simply wait for him to be DFA'd or become available in the Rule 5 Draft.
  2. Reducing the team's payroll by ~20% is no accident--it was part of a plan. If that plan results in another throwaway season--it will still be a lucrative year for those on the Executive Committee (also part of the plan!).
  3. I think "overpaying" means exceeding the alotted budget. Ex: $15MM was alotted for new SP for 2013--and anything more than that is "overpaying". Adding the public statement of "3 new starting pitchers", and... . The salary reduction achieved by the trade of Span and replacing him with a "league minimum guy", provide additional funds to acquire the "lottery ticket purchase" type of pitcher. Perhaps their theory is something like: "we finished dead last spending $100MM, we can finish dead last spending $80MM".
  4. I am of the opinion that part of the reason Ryan was reinstated as GM was "his contention" that he won with a much lower payroll than Smith used--and that it could be done again! The comment about "lots of arms" is a clear indicator of the Twins' philosophy of starting pitching--especially when buttressed by the early statements about "a thin pitching market". Sounds like a Catch 22 kind of thing--if a guy had a strong season, he's overpriced, but if a guy didn't have a good last season, he can't be all that good and thus isn't worth much--but that's the kind of pitcher (they) want because next year may be "his year".
  5. Most likely Appel will be drafted this summer--the Twins have the 4th selection. The Twins won't jeopardize losing a draft choice the following year by overrunning the "slot budget"--which would require that Appel would sign for #4 slot money. He must still be available for the Twins to draft with that 4th selection--unlikely.
  6. Wow! That is super! Somehow we'll have to find a way to quell all of the "sell high" guys. I mean how many posts have we read advocating trading Willingham?--or any of the newly signed pitchers should he "have a good 1st half, then 'flip' him"--these guys are relentless.
  7. Any predictions on how many HRs Plouffe will hit in 2013? How manyHRS (or OPS) are needed to justify him as a regular 3B?
  8. Well, there we have it!--The fewer baserunners allowed per inning, the lower the ERA--and people thought this was quantum theory. A graph of OPS vs ERA likely has an even higher correlation than WHIP vs ERA, but sorry I don't have that information.
  9. Let's not kid ourselves--none of these "marginal" pitchers signed can be "flipped" for someone useful--remember Livan Hernandez and his 10 wins in July '08?--nobody wanted him!
  10. No, the real purpose is show that the FO is "not satisfied" with what they have and will continue to add limited risk (limited reward also) to show the fan base that "they're trying". Yes, this is a CYA manuever. Let Mike bitch about 75 wins are not enough--but this team needs so much help to get to 81, much less 97 (60%), that to think it could be done in one year is total fantasy. To consider Marcum (or any other SP on the FA market) is total BS. This team won't get turned around until the minor leaguers mature--and are the real deal! I think if half of the "top ten prospects" amount to quality major leaguers there would be cause for a major celebration.
  11. "Signing league average pitchers long-term..."--All agree Correia isn't much, but two years 'isn't long-term'. These one-year deals--they do show a commitment to put a decent team on the field in 2013--and that was part of the agreement between taxpayer and ownership. A 75 win team is more entertaining than last season's 66 win team. It wasn't just the 96 losses--but that all too many of these "losses" came in the first three innings with the rest of the game just "mop-up". I believe Twins fans deserve better--and that the team can be rebuilt into a consistent winner while still putting an entertaining team on the field during the years needed to rebuild.
  12. I hope that there are enough innings in training camp to examine every potential starter and still properly train and prepare the eventual members of the Active Roster for the regular season.
  13. Apparently Ryan is looking under every rock to see if there is an effective major league pitcher underneath.
  14. ...and the answers is: to place someone who hasn't played 3B, SS, or 2B because they wish to claim that all positions are interchangeable--no experience required. Hmm, if that were the case why nt have Mauer pitch on the one game per week he needs to avoid catcher duty. Hoo Boy!!!
  15. HR hitters are typically pull hitters. But Thome did hit more than his fair share of power hits to LF and CF.
  16. Then you will love trading Diamond, wouldn't he be at his 'peak" value? My XXX, why do people think the Twins should trade a guy because "he's at peak value"? In order to build a quality team, the quality players must be retained. It's the lesser players who should be traded--the fool's gold.
  17. Much teeth gnashing attacking/defending the FO. True, starting pitching was (still is!) a major problem and the FO admittedly has focused on that problem--but it sure wasn't the only deficiency on the roster. The Twins are under-powered, and quite frankly the back-half of the line didn't have anywhere near high enough OBP to justify their abysmal SLG. Span and Revere (neither with the team anymore!) did provide quality OBP, but their lack of SLG combined with the back half's poor OBP, and their combined RBI total was at best lacklustre (worse IMO). Tall and short of it, Ryan hasn't devoted any resources for improving the offense despite being "under budget" for the acquisition of the three promised starting pitchers. Then there is the question of substandard infield defense and the need to improve there (especially in DP efficiency) considering the Twins lack of Ks and plethora of ground balls. Those defending the actions of the FO by using quantity and not quality as the basis for signing free agent pitching (and its resultant lower cost!) when nothing has been done to improve the other deficiencies in the team by utilizing some (all?) of the money "saved" by signing lower cost pitchers.
  18. Given the acquisition of the promised three starting pitchers apparently nicely under the "available budget" what is the likelihood a useful hitte is signed?
  19. It's how they hold the ball that matters. The degree of which the ball is forced between the fingers--fingers close less movement, far apart with the ball pushed down--more downward movement. Why did the Twins sour on the split-fingered? All they said is they thought it led to injuries--but they didn't elaborate or cite figures/ study.
  20. "It's just a matter of who is going to emerge." Umm, I think there is a bit more to success than that. Farmers don't just buy seed and throw it on the ground to see what "is going to emerge."
  21. If I were more computer skilled I would have posted that photo of Bush on the carrier with him thumb raised saying "Mission Accomplished" but with Ryan's head photoshopped replacing Bush's head. Ryan promised three new starting pitchers--and he has "accomplished"--Worley, Correia, and now Pelfrey. Just because you interpreted his statement as: Cy Young, Walter Johnson, and Christy Mathewson is not Ryan's fault. I think the elbow trouble was more likely caused by the reliance on "sinkers" rather than the cutter, etc. The Twins used to strongly advise against throwing the split-fingered fastball, because they believed it was injurious. The "sinker" is a less extreme version of the "splitter". I think the Twins are through signing free-agents this year. A trade (before April) is possible--but I'm guessing unless the offer is "stantial"--but unlikely. Let the "Spring Training competition" begin!
  22. It isn't about somebody for the future--it's about somebody now! There is/was no reason that the Twins should not put an entertaining team on the field every game--it was promised. If they do trade more of the top players for rebuilding purposes--there had better be a very solid return of talent. We have already endured two disgusting seasons, if we are to endure another (even worse) season there has to be a quick turnaround. We paid for a new stadium so we could watch an interesting, competitive team (as was promised) so it is incumbent that the Twins management provide one--and not pull "a Marlins" on us!
  23. I wasn't implying that Gardenhire was in favor of trading Santana, but rather he was strongly in favor of the Mets package as opposed to the competing packages from Boston and NY. He was "drooling" about Gomez, and others the "pitching prospects". True, if those guys had all panned-out--Oh my, the Twins would have been so much stronger and would not be in the position they are now!
  24. Uh, no we're not all in agreement that Revere was a better CF. Span's positioning and his initial read made up for being slightly less faster than Revere. {I have this sense posters equate Revere with Usian Bolt and every other Twins' OF ranges from snail to turtle--Span is fast!} Gardenhire badly underestimated Kubel's ability and marginalized him to the point that the Twins made the Tampa trade. The Santana trade and accepting the "package from the Mets"--has Gardenhire's input all over it. Combine that with the immediate promotion of Gomez over Span in the "famous" 2008 Spring Training CF competition--yeah, more Gardenhire. But to mee his biggest sin was the inclusion of Radke in the 2006 playoff roster and its rotation. Radke was injured and was no longer the pitcher he was. To claim "loyalty" was a slap in the face of everyone else who busted their tail to make the 2006 team a division winner. It is incumbent to put the best 9 on the field in the playoffs and Radke (sadly) was no longer in that category. Garza (he took over for Liriano in the OAK game when his tendon broke) pitched very well against the A's, demonstrating that he was up to the task of pitching against them. He should have been on the playoff roster as a minimum, and given the team's starting pitching needs (there were many) probably should have started Game 3. But loyalty to Radke--yikes!
