  1. Hicks is definately opening some eyes! He probably won't be hitting lots more HRs this Spring--but he will see a lot more breaking balls in the dirt, or way off of the plate. Rickey Henderson used his power to truly fatten his OBP with BBs--pitchers just didn't want to "lay it over the middle" (PtoC) for awhile after he hit a dinger. Patience and a keen eye (as well as all that speed, and base larceny) made him the Runs Scored leader. No, I don't think that Hicks will score 2,000+ runs, but I do see him as a mainstay in the OF--in April!
  2. Discussion about Benson leading off--moot point. Unless Mastroianni is on the DL, Benson will be in Rochester.
  3. Exactly! The Twins are wont to blame disappointment on factors beyond their control--Yankee money, unfavorable draft position for the Twins but favorable for someone else, "injuries", "home field advantage", etc. But, it is rare that they ever admit to their own mistakes. For nearly ten years they trumpeted their success on the SF Giants trade and also the acquistion of Johan Santana, but "other trades or acquisitions"--silence. The long term lack of draft success is more likely systemic than "bad luck".
  4. Perhaps comparing the Twins to the Cardinals would make for a better comparison?
  5. Considering Gardenhire is still managing, players will be rotated on a whim and any rookies will feel the lash of his tongue and likely the wheels of the bus. He has his pets, and if you aren't one of them you have trouble. Heaven help the guy who is competing against a "pet" for a starting job.
  6. Harden was signed as a CYA for Ryan. He was never projected to be anything more than that. If Harden can prove himself--and that will be in the minors--he will be further evaluated. I would expect Ryan would prefer him as a starter as an emergency basis due to multiple injuries--like right now. But without multiple games of multiple innings duration, there is no way he will be inserted into the rotation.
  7. How much would the Twins receive in a trade for a guy who has failed at the major league level and plays a position the Twins are known to have in excess?
  8. "Is he ready [for the majors]"? We won't know for at least a year or two--as a major league player. "Control this guy"! If the Twins are going to continue to think like a small market team--they will be trading these guys off by the end of their 5th year anyway. Ryan's departure had a lot to do with retaining Hunter and Santana for '07, when trading them after the '06 season made far more financial sense--and likely would have fetched better returns. I think he (and the executive committee) learned their lesson. There will only be one "Joe Mauer" on the Twins at a time.
  9. Given this write-up of the OF talent in the minor leagues now, does it make any sense to use the #4 selection in the draft on an OF--even if "he is the best player available"?
  10. Gardenhire never really liked De Vries--he nibbles at the strike zone, and the press jumped on his MN connections. I think that's why we are hearing about "stretching-out" Duensing. I believe Gardenhire vastly prefers Duensing to start as opposed to De Vries starting.
  11. My take as well, the left-handed kiss-of-death for SS. But it does illustrate Gardenhire has his pets--and apparently Dozier at 2B is one of them. This also serves to squelch talk of anyone else starting at 2B this April.
  12. The occasions where it's OK to use duensing for multiple innings are: the Twins are way behind, the Twins are way ahead, the bullpen has been way overstressed and someone has to "bite the bullet" and allow some rest to the group.
  13. Whoa! 436 ' to CF? Holy cow! Just let them hit fly balls to CF.
  14. The Twins (like most everybody else) have critical needs at: starting pitching, power hitting, and shortstop. The Twins have also stated that "[we're] going to do this the 'right' way..."--so we must conclude that there will not be any "top-flight" free-agent signed. Thus, the Twins must meet their critical needs in the amateur draft or exchange multiple "prospects" like KC. If this presumed BPA isn't one of the above, they have wasted their pick--especially when this draft is projected to be thin on talent.
  15. Oh wow! Punto and Redmond lead Twins to success!
  16. The explanation given for best pitch location I heard was: "down and away and high and inside are the toughest pitches to hit--because your arms are attached to your shoulders."
  17. I seem to remember some day in May as being significant for free agents and their former team--but I don't know why, what or said ramifications.
  18. I conclude that there is a lot a resentment inside of posters based on reading this thread and others concerning the subject of "team control". "Yeah, Mr. BB Player, we're gonna` screw you out of one year's of free agent salary. That'll teach you!" Whew, what happened to cheering a guy on and wishing him not only success (for our benefit also) but the opportunity to enjoy said success. It's not like any poster will receive any of that "saved" money. Payroll constraint? The Twins executive committee sets their budget and imposes the constraints. The franchise is not in danger of overstepping the MLB threshhold for luxury tax, so there really is no restriction for the Twins to compensate a player for superior performance.
  19. 1). I sure hope Rosario succeeds as projected above. 2). Dozier won't be blocking anybody. 3). If Rosario puts up the numbers projected above, he'll blow by everybody in the Twins' infield. People will be saying Doz-who? 4). It sure would be nice to have a 2B who can actually hit.
  20. Way to be proactive! They sure do lead from the front!
  21. I guess I need to use an emoticon for some of you. d;-)
  22. He was sandbagging. The poor throw might not have cost a base, but the good throw got an out. Parmalee has played RF before--he was "trained" to play 1B as a second option/path to the Twins.
  23. The top golfers have swing coaches, so I'm not surprised that BB players would use their team's coach. But the thread was a bit of a bait for trolls due to the premise that Mauer went to Brunansky.
  24. Then why trade? The sort of "talent" received from those trades can easily be found in the 8th round of the amateur draft.
  25. Or option him to Rochester, and just not put him in a game. He's not injured, just not playing--coaches decision.
