  1. Billy Hamilton was the scout's example but yeah I know what you're saying. Turner had college experience at a big time school that definitely helped him develop and stay at short. The scout's point is with speed that fast, Lewis can get to balls that no one else can, pretty much what Buxton is doing now. That Lewis' SS defensive game would have to be a plus to get the same effect as his plus-plus defense at CF.
  2. I don't know about that, of the two, Javier is more likely staying in the infield either at SS or 3B. In a year (definitely two), I'd bet strong money that Lewis is in CF. One scout who recently saw him said he's "too fast to waste in the infield". And a certain former first round pitcher agrees that Royce's future lies in the outfield.
  3. I told him pretty much the same thing this spring training. He had a big smile on his face and said we'll see. From conversations with him, he'd love to stay a starter but he'd be happy as hell just to be in the big leagues.
  4. Let the legend begin, first pro at bat, first homerun
  5. Well just got back from intrasquad game and a few names that played were Robles Rodriguez (pepperdine) Atkins Burns Kohl Stewart started the game (went 5 IP) so that's who Royce Lewis got to face for three at bats. I'll have pics and video later, off to Miami for the Cubs game. Stewart gave an extremely glowing report of Lewis after the game.
  6. This isn't exactly concrete proof but pretty sure the Twins have signed Leach and he's in town, just saying I saw a brand new GT Mustang with Ontario plates in the players lot yesterday for this first time this summer this weekend. So either Leach is here or Balazovic got a brand new whip. Intrasquad game action is set for GCL this afternoon.
  7. No doubt Sano is athletic and has a plus arm at 3B, he doesn't have do anymore but in 4 years do you think he'll still be the same size with the same quickness? Personally, I don't. He's only going to keep getting bigger over time especially the more he becomes a patient slugger. So it is completely within the realm that he'll move to 1B or DH. As for Lewis, he's known for a plus arm whether in the outfield or on the left side of the infield. It's the question of his footwork and fielding abilities if he can play SS. Here's what BA had to say about his defense:
  8. Akil Baddoo is proof that no matter how much you scout prep players for the draft you can never really be sure what you have. Baddoo was drafted as top of the lineup burner due to his plus speed and quick hands. Since being drafted, Akil has put on nearly 20 pounds and almost all if it is muscle. The good that comes with that is extra power but the bad is that he often gets pull happy and tries to drive the ball instead of just making contact and using his still plus speed. Defensively, Akil has what scouts call a "noodle arm", it's below average and despite his speed he doesn't run the cleanest routes. I've seen him make spectacular plays in CF/RF that a normal defender makes look easy. Still there is alot to like about the kid and plenty of time to hammer out his kinks. Here's a couple of pics of him: Workout Baddoo:
  9. Graterol will be in GCL to start the year, they're going to be cautious with him. Kid has a million dollar arm (and the Twins got him for 150K in 2014-15 as a 16yo). His baseball idol is Felix Hernandez and likes to model his game after him. Personally, his stuff reminds me alot of Fernando Romero and the two had worked out together rehabbing from TJS last year. On Baddoo, I got no real answer, but he does have some contact issues that I know they were working on in EXST. His swing has an elevated loft component which lends itself to extrabase hits but also alot of swing and misses.
  10. Yes, 35 man limit for Short season and under while it's a 25 man limit for everything above (Low A to AAA).
  11. Just in time for the GCL season which starts on Monday
  12. Exactly and if you want to put it on a grand scheme of things, the 15M investments the Twins will make in the 2017 draft is only a million more than what they are paying Phil Hughes for the 2017 season...
  13. For contextual purposes, those that want Lewis at #1, just think if Nick Gordon went to college (Florida State) he'd have been eligible for the 2017 draft. Gordon would have easily been the top SS prospect in this draft class that was missing heavily on middle infield prospects especially with college pedigrees. Instead Nick's played three years in the minors and ascended to AA where he's put up great numbers while playing a premium defensive position. So yeah, Gordon #1.
  14. I hope Schutte gets out of Florida this year, I think I've seen him for three years down here now, he's slowly progressed more so with his control and secondary as his fastball velocity is nothing to write home about. As for Balazovic, he had a rocky finish to his EXST (but was pretty good early on) and I heard the pitching coaches discussing and trying to figure out was wrong mechanically as his release point was all over in his last few outings. So I wouldn't be shocked if he started off in the GCL and was an early bump.
  15. What about him? The coaches saw enough of him in EXST that showed that he's ready for an aggressive start in Etown instead of GCL, plus an addition of another top end SS (that's even younger than Wander) that needs playing time too probably coaxed the decision too. I've posted up multiple videos I took of Wander in other threads so I won't do it again but the kid has all the tools, still very raw. Shameless plug, I have video on my youtube channel of nearly everyone that was assigned to Etown.
  16. Having seen many of these kids extensively the past couple months and getting to know them I'm very happy for them. As Seth said Trey Cabbage has a very high ceilling and is extremely athletic, he's just been very unlucky with minor injuries since signing. Having talked to him about the switch to the OF and seen him in EXST action, I think he'll finally start to show his talent. My biggest surprise was seeing the lot of DSL arms going to Etown - Acosta, Suniaga, and Colina; keep an eye on Suniaga, he has good stuff with decent control. Don't sleep on Jose Martinez and Moises Gomez, both in low 90's with good breaking balls and control and Juan Gamez gets up to 95 mph.
  17. Honestly, it's got to be soon as the GCL season starts on 6/26 and Etown starts 6/22 and there were close to 70 players in camp for EXST plus the 20 or so the Twins will sign from the draft.
  18. Seth made the half glass full post regarding players soon to be getting promotions but sadly there is usually an inverse that happens at this time as well in players getting cut at this point too. Usually it's draftees from 2014, 2015 class but occasionally you'll get a smattering of 2016 picks and international signing failures.
  19. Yeah but quite a few people (myself included) who thought the deal was dumb at the time, now two years later it's even dumber. Jepsen is now out of baseball, was ineffective as a Twin while Hu is 23, in the MLB and under service control for the next 6 years
  20. It's a good problem to have, I don't think I've ever heard a team complain they have too many SS, it's like complaining you have too much pitching. Also in two years there is a good chance that four out those six are NOT playing SS but other positions whether due to lack of ability to or just outgrowing the position. Just remember the Twins drafted Michael Cuddyer as a SS out of HS too....
  21. For those wondering, "Rolls" Royce Lewis is already in Fort Myers getting ready for the GCL season that starts in a week.
  22. Yes, I've seen Javier play every weekend as the regular starting SS in EXST. Defensively, he's got a strong arm, covers good ground, his footwork needs work though and he doesn't have the softest hands. The biggest concern is that he is going to fill out and grow over the next 5 years and he might end up on the "large SS" spectrum or move to 3B or corner OF. Offensively, his swing needs work but the bat speed he possesses and how quickly the ball comes off his bat is pretty remarkable. Here's video of him this spring: Wander hitting, running the bases and fielding on 6/3/17 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQ74YS9IuZ0 Wander hitting on 5/29/17 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPOX1j61VxI Wander hitting on 5/20/17 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UM4NFu8WBP0
  23. MiLB.com has it and it's also on his MiLB.com page that he was reassigned on June 2nd Baseball America did have the preliminary GCL rosters but that was recently taken down after the draft as it will change after the recent draft picks. The worst part of the year is about to come up as several players will be cut from the lower levels to make room for new blood.
  24. Joe Record RHP 6'3 210lbs UC Santa Barbara 28th Round
  25. Jordan "Don't call me Sean" Spicer RHP Polk State (FL) JUCO 26th Round Maybe the Twins throw him a little scratch to get him to sign for sixth round money elsewise he's going back to school and likely to increase his draft stock for the 2018 Draft
