  1. Yeah, that's a different horse. Specifically regarding the number two pick, no, the Twins will not take McCullers. If he's available later on, it's a possibility.
  2. Most project McCullers as a closer. I don't see the Twins targeting him.
  3. Perhaps recognizing the changing landscape of what is expected from the second base position, transitioning into more of an offensive role, the Twins have moved left-handed hitting Eddie Rosario from the outfield to the keystone spot. The Pioneer Press's John Shipley spoke to Twins' minor league director, Jim Rantz, regarding this decision. The pathway to the majors will be the quickest for him at second base: And it seems that the Twins are focusing their efforts on getting him acclimated to the positions and setting him up for success by having Tom Kelly and Paul Molitor work with him on developing his infield skills: It also seems that despite his power outburst in Elizabethton last year - hitting 21 home runs after tagging just five in the Gulf Coast League - the Twins are not really anticipating that to continue with him as he continues to advance in the system: From , you can see he gets the barrel of the bat through the hitting zone very quickly. It may not translate to 30 home run power, but he could certainly provide some pop at a position that has been historically void of power for the Twins. And, if he adapts to second well, that could happen sooner rather than later
  4. Color me a bit disappointed to read this. I was anxious to take a road trip to Beloit, WI to see an infield of Miguel Sano, Eddie Rosario and Levi Michael. Now, according to the Star Tribune's LaVelle E Neal, the Twins are thinking about moving Michael up a level: A friend of mine who is a scout in the Padres system had the Carolinas are his territory and had watched Michael at UNC for 30 or so games. When the Twins drafted him, he messaged me calling Minnesota's selection "very legit." Michael, of course, spent most of his last season in college playing hurt and did not play in any organized games for the Twins last year, which may have diminished how prospectors viewed him. With Fort Myers as his starting point, it looks like the organization will challenge him to progress.
  5. While I really like Verlander, the only reason I wouldn't take him is because of the mileage on his arm. While I do not want to get too focused on pitch counts (because going over 100 pitches isn't necessarily a bad thing), he has thrown over 120 pitches in a game 32 times in his career. Combine that with the innings pitched in recent years and you can see some of those factors taking their toll on him.
  6. Here's a great piece from MLB.com's Corey Brock on how the San Diego Padres use both scouting and stats to improve their team. I suggest you take the time to read the whole thing but if you don't have that kind of time, here's some great excerpts: Padres' assistant GM AJ Hinch on the scouting department: Hinch on who to hire for the scouting positions: Cubs director of professional scouting Joe Bohringer on using analytics: It's clearly a dedicate balance of how to introduce analytics to an industry that has been built on gut instinct. Some teams have found it challenging to adapt to the new world balance and it sounds as if the Twins, who are trying to learn and apply more analytic thought into the decision-making process, have struggled to fully embrace it.
  7. That's a good point. I wonder if MLBTradeRumors has put together a list of potential spring training waiver candidates. Would be good to see what the Twins options could be.
  8. According to the Star Tribune's Joe Christensen, Twins general manager Terry Ryan said that the team will be looking outside to find a utility player. Christensen speculates that Tampa might be a good trade partner for them: I don't know what this says Sean Burroughs, Mike Holliman or Pedro Florimon, who have been speculated as the Twins primary options right now. Johnson's been a bit of a whiff machine in the minors (2.5-to-1 K-to-BB ratio) as well as his limited time in the majors. So don't expect too much from his bat. What he does possess is the ability "pick it" at short and second, potentially giving the Twins a true "defense first" type play off the bench.
  9. I assume the lone home run with be of the inside-the-park variety, right?
  10. No, no. I'm just saying what he relayed to the media did not provide much insight - not that he doesn't understand these things.
  11. One of the Twins scouts, Cary Broder, was actively involved in scouting Nishioka during his NPB days:
  12. Former Twin Steve Tolleson is now in the game for the Birds.
  13. Robert Andino knots the score at one with a solo homer off of new Twins pitcher Carlos Gutierrez.
  14. Fifth inning: Blackburn out, Brian Duensing in.
  15. Luke Hughes is granted a double after left fielder Wilson Betemit called off shortstop JJ Hardy on a shallow fly ball only to have it fall to the turf.
  16. Dan Gladden lauded catcher Rene Riviera has being really good at getting the ball back to the pitcher quickly. That's a skill that is not emphasized enough...
  17. Twins amass a potential rally in the bottom of the inning - thanks to a Span infield hit, a Nishioka sac and a Chris Parmelee walk. Doumit strands Span on third with an inning-ended ground out to JJ Hardy.
  18. You're right, strike that, reverse that.
  19. In contrast to the 10-run first inning yesterday, Twins shut out the Orioles today. Baby steps...
  20. No, Brad Radke. Slightly younger and able to pitch to contact better.
  21. The Birds come to visit Hammond Stadium, the first of a two-game set for the Twins. They will jump over the highway to JetBlue Stadium today. Joe Christensen provides us with the day game's lineup: A lineup with Nishioka - who was just lambasted as looking "lost" this spring by Buster Olney - who is playing short today and trying to prove Olney and the evaluators wrong. Keep an eye on that. Also, look to see if Blackburn's adjustments continues to pay off for him.
  22. According to Jack Curry, the Yankees have signed Andy Pettitte to a one-year minor league deal worth $2.5 million dollars. The almost 40-year-old lefty, who retired at the end of the 2010 season, did not pitch in all of 2011 after throwing 129 innings the previous year. Ten more seasons and he'll catch up to Jamie Moyer.
