  2. The Twins got multi-hit games from seven hitters and seven shutout innings (nine strikeouts) from Phil Hughes on their way to a 7-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. Joe Mauer and Kendrys Morales each had three hits, and Hughes improved to 7-2 on the season. Following the game, the Twins optioned Josmil Pinto to Rochester where he’ll join the Red Wings in Lehigh Valley on Thursday. The Twins will be adding a catcher to their roster on Thursday or before the game on Friday. Also, you can expect to hear about several Twins draft pick signings on Thursday. However, this is the Minnesota Twins Minor League Report, so let’s see what happened in the Twins farm system on Wednesday: RED WINGS REPORT No game scheduled. ROCK CATS REVIEW New Britain 8, Reading 5 Box Score The Rock Cat bats powered their way to another win. Sam Fuld, in what likely was his final rehab game, went 3-5 with a walk and his second double. Brandon Waring hit his fourth and fifth home runs of the season. He also walked and was hit by a pitch. Matt Koch and Tony Thomas were both 2-4 with a walk. Kennys Vargas was 2-5 and drove in two runs. Sean Gilmartin gave up a lot of hits but was able to limit the damage. In five innings, he gave up 11 hits but just four runs. He didn’t walk anyone and struck out six. Mark Hamburger came on and gave up one run over his two innings. He gave up a solo homer. Jim Fuller gave up two hits but no runs over two innings. Cole Johnson recorded his fifth save when he struck out two in a perfect inning. MIRACLE MATTERS Ft. Myers 7, Charlotte 6 Box Score The Miracle got yet another terrific start from JO Berrios. The offense supported him, and the team was able to hang on at the end for the win. Berrios went six innings and gave up two runs on four hits. He walked two and struck out seven. Steven Gruver struck out two over two perfect innings. With a five-run lead, Tyler Jones came on for the ninth inning. He was charged with four runs, all unearned, in the ninth, but was able to close the game for a one-run victory. Stuart Turner gave the Miracle an early lead with a two-run homer in the second inning. Michael Gonzales was also 1-3 with a walk and a home run. He drove in three runs. The Miracle had just six hits but they also walked six times. Travis Harrison doubled for the 18th time this season. In his last nine starts, Berrios has been incredible. He has gone 6-1 with a 1.75 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP, 11.5 K/9 and a 2.6 BB/9. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 5, Quad Cities 4 Box Score This was a tight game throughout. The Kernels scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, then gave up three runs in the top of the ninth and barely hung on for the win. Phenom Fernando Romero made the start and went four innings. He gave up one run on five hits. He walked two and struck out one. 46 of his 76 pitches were strikes. SD Buhr pointed out that his fastball was sitting between 91 and 96 mph. He was replaced by Brandon Bixler who struck out two over three perfect innings. Hudson Boyd pitched a scoreless eighth inning. However, he gave up three runs in the ninth inning and got just the first two outs. Todd Van Steensel recorded his sixth save by getting a fly out to left. Mitch Garver went 3-4. Tanner Vavra and Bryan Haar each went 2-4. Jon Murphy was 2-3 with his second double. Jason Kanzler hit his sixth home run. Chad Christensen hit his third triple and drove in three runs. TWINS DAILY PLAYERS OF THE DAY Twins Daily Minor League Pitcher of the Day – JO Berrios, Ft. 3. That's consistent with what I saw in spring training. He was 89-91 and touched 93 once.
  4. Glen Perkins is a given. Brian Dozier is a Probably, and the only reason he is a Probably is because the 2B spot in the AL includes: Robinson Cano, Dustin Pedroia, Jason Kipnis, Ian Kinsler and Jose Altuve. Dozier has been the best this year, but 1.) he doesn't have the long-term success that the first four of them have, 2.) One of them will get voted in by the fans, and the second 2B will be voted in by the players. That leaves just two or three 'at-large' spots, and 3.) the Astros need a representative and Altuve has been terrific. Hughes probably deserves a spot. I haven't looked at other pitchers and compared, but I'd say he's deserving. Santana - no way.
  5. 22 is NOT old for the FSL, at all.
  6. He's getting so much movement on his pitches that 1.) not many are making solid contact against him, and 2.) he's walking a few too many. 1.) makes the strikeouts not quite as big of a deal, and 2.) is why he can get into trouble sometimes.
  7. This is what I would do as well.
  8. I think with Wimmers, he'll get another shot to start at some point. I think we forget how much his arm has been through over the last two seasons. This might be the best way to bring him back.
  9. What impresses me the most is how he seems to get everyone to buy in. Most on the roster are hoping for a cup of coffee, or maybe a utility role. He plays everyone quite a bit and moves players all over the field. Makes it fun but also prepares players to have more value to a big league team too.
  10. A few pre-short season releases: LHP Hein Robb, RHP Tanner Mendonca, 3B Javier Pimentel, LHP Andrew Ferreira.
  11. I 100% agree with this... but someone made the comment that it was about rewarding performance, and if that's the case, Meyer is down the chart. Not that he's pitching poorly by any means... When the front office says it's about who is ready, it has to more with a lot more than just numbers. it's about readiness, and it's about them being able to succeed. For Pino, there's clearly some reason that he has never been given a chance despite being pretty solid in AAA for a long time. For him, I'd love to see a cup of coffee and just see if it could possibly translate at all (not likely). For Achter, we don't know. Yes, he's a reliever, but he's dominating in a way that Tonkin hasn't. Tonkin is the better prospect and may have the better future, but at some point, when you're pitching like Achter, you have earned a shot too. May and Meyer, clearly, are the guys with the bigger futures (in theory based on prospect status which is based on "stuff", "Makeup", scouting reports and much more). They will both get their shots. No question about it, and we hope that at least one of them can be a 2 or 3, and maybe even a true #1 (though those are so rare)... They'll get there, but my thing is that it 1.) can't be about the numbers alone, and 2.) I won't pretend I know what's best for them. If they aren't up, there is some reason, and I will not believe that it's because of the Futures Game or even the Super 2.
  12. He is pitching as well as he has ever pitched in his career, and it's great to see.
  13. He can IF his team there allows him to... Not sure if they would or not, probably would.
  14. Amen!! I think the perspectives of those who actually played are so valuable...
  15. But "ready" in whose mind? Ours? Just checking.
  16. So, who do you bring up? If it's a reward for their success, then it should be 1.) May, 2.) Johnson, 3.) Achter, 4.) Pino, 5.) Meyer...
  17. THIS!!! This is the key point. he's 19 and facing 21-23 year olds who have spent either 3 years in college for 5-6 years in pro ball. Let the kid develop. They're more veteran and they still aren't hitting him well. We should be encouraged!
  18. He wasn't in spring training when I talked to him, but Travis Aune showed me a report from last night saying he was throwing his slider. I think people are making way too big a deal about the strikeouts... (or lack thereof)
  19. As we read, DeMuth hurt himself last year by essentially lying to a Twins area scout (allegedly)... The Twins try to sign their top 15 picks. and then several after that.
  20. That's obviously true, but it's certainly not going to come at the expense of the big league club. In other words, the Futures Game is not the reason May or Meyer are not up now, and it won't be the reason in the next few weeks.
  21. It's 22% instead of like 17%, but it's soon. There's really no way to know until the end of the year.
  22. The Twins have announced that 1st round pick Nick Gordon has signed with the team. Mike Berardino is tweeting that he has talked to people with direct knowledge and hearing that they have agreed to the slot value of $3.851 million. Very nice to get the signing done quickly. He'll report soon to Ft. Myers for a mini-camp. I'm surprised that the Twins also announced that he would play for Elizabethton. Typically, high school picks have started in the GCL before moving up to Elizabethton midseason (Buxton, Berrios, Stewart, Gonsalves of late). Joe Mauer started at Elizabethton. i'm sure there were others... maybe?
  23. It was one move. Morales can't pitch, he can only replace Kubel and the current DH options. On its own, the Morales signing was pretty exciting... it has nothing to do with any of the rest of those things. And no one, including the Twins, would tell you that it does.
  24. Correct... the Twins have been pretty aggressive in free agency this offseason, but also in the offseason when they very quickly brought in Willingham, Doumit and Carroll. Granted, Nolasco, Hughes and now Morales are certainly more high profile and well compensated, but the Twins have clearly been pushing for awhile. I'm as big a prospect guy as their is, but this is a good move. Sure, some may want Vargas up, but he's not ready. Morales gets them through this season which is good for Vargas, but also good for the Twins and the fans. As others have said, more needs to happen. The first move should be Trevor May for Kevin Correia. I'd wait a bit yet on Deduno/Meyer, but no more than a month if 1.) Deduno pitches like yesterday and 2.) Meyer is still on the 80 pitch limit. But to the point of Nick's article, the idea is win now, and as a long-time Twins fan, that is exciting for me. I love the prospect of prospects, but the big league club is the one I watch and it's been a hard three years. This year has been so much better, so much more competitive.
  25. Paul is right, although it's the FSL (not the GCL)... I do think the bigger thing shown is just how incredible what Walker is doing. Guys just don't typically hit that many homers in the FSL. That said, I'd expect more from some of those guys.
