I look at each trade on their own merit. I think the Twins are 3-3 in trades so far this year. I don't have the time or energy to think about if he was like 37-50 or 47-50 on these trades... Just looking at each trade as one trade and I like all three of them.

The Twins sent right-handed pitchers Ricky Nolasco and Alex Meyer to the Angels in exchange for left-hander Hector Santiago and minor league right-hander Alan Busenitz. Twins fans have to be impressed that interim GM Rob Antony was able to find a taker for the frustrating Nolasco and the approximately $18-20 million remaining on his four year-$49 million contract. Nolasco threw a strong eight inning in his start over the weekend, maybe giving the Angels reason to think that he has turned a corner, or that they can get him back to his former self. Alex Meyer came to the Twins in the Denard Span trade from the Nationals. He was considered a top pitching prospect at the time because of a power fastball. He showed his potential at times, but he also found himself out with shoulder issues a few times. He made two relief appearances last year with the Twins. He also made one start for the team in early May. He hasn’t pitched in a game since due to a shoulder issue. Santiago, 28, has played for both the White Sox and the Angels. This season, he is 10-4 with a 4.25 ERA and a 5.03 FIP. He has struck out about 8.0 per nine innings, but has also walked about 4.3 per nine innings. The southpaw has a 3.68 career ERA and one more year left of arbitration. He should immediately take Nolasco’s spot in the rotation. Finally, the Twins acquired Alan Busenitz in the deal. He was the Angels 25th-round pick in 2013 out of Kennesaw State. He will turn 26 years old later this month. He began the season with 24 appearances out of the bullpen in AA Arkansas where he posted a 1.93 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP and 8.8 K/9. He recently moved up to AAA Salt Lake and has a 9.00 ERA in 13 innings. He does have 13 strikeouts in the Pacific Coast League. He should report to Rochester. Rhett Bollinger is reporting that the Twins will pay Ricky Nolasco for the rest of this season. The Angels will pay Hector Santiago for the rest of this year. The Twins are also sending $4 million to the Angels next year to help them pay Nolasco. As the trade deadline has passed, Ervin Santana, Kurt Suzuki and Brandon Kintzler all remain on the Twins roster. Works for me... Light has upside yet. Team him with Pressly, May, Tonkin and Rogers, along with JT Chargois (and eventually guys like Melotakis, Reed, Burdi, Hildenberger, etc.) Abad had a nice couple of months and is a solid MLB pitcher. He was clearly the right choice over Tony Sipp and Antonio Bastardo. But dealing him now for a guy with upside is a great deal... Note - Rob Antony, 2-for-2.

If you saw him in spring training, and the work he was doing, the strides he's taken are tremendous.

Several Twins players have had their names mentioned in trade rumors over the last couple of weeks. The player seemingly most likely to be traded before the deadline is catcher Kurt Suzuki. He has been mentioned in rumors for a month, and teams can always use a backup catcher. Suzuki is putting together one of his best seasons with the bat and has always had a strong reputation for working with pitchers. When Jonathan Lucroy used his veto power to void a trade to Cleveland yesterday, it may have slowed the process. Cleveland is one possible destination for the Twins backstop, though there are several others that would be interested in Suzuki as well. At least two Twins bullpen arms are also garnering a lot of attention from scouts the last couple of weeks. Fernando Abad was terrific the first couple of months of the season. He hasn't been as good of late, but the left-hander should be of interest to some teams Brandon Kintzler, like Abad, came to the Twins on a minor league contract before the season. He began the season in Rochester. Since he has come up to the Twins, he has been terrific. Kintzler took over the closer's role and has been very good. He missed most of last season with a knee injury, but he has come back stronger this year. Since both players are under team control for at least another year, Rob Antony needs to weigh the return with what they believe the pitchers can be next year. On the other side of that coin, the Twins need to make room for the likes JT Chargois, Mason Melotakis and others. Could the Twins find a taker who wants Ervin Santana enough to take on the remainder (or most) of his contract and give the Twins a quality prospect or two? Toronto has reportedly shown a lot of interest of late. It's hard to imagine a Tommy Milone or Ricky Nolasco trade today, but could the Twins find a team to take them before the August waiver deadline? Could the Twins deal Brian Dozier for a big haul? Would they? Do they trust the potential of Jorge Polanco? Player of the week (7/24-7/31): Single-A Cedar Rapids left-handed pitcher Lachlan Wells is the Twins minor league Player of the Week...Wells made one starts for the Kernels on Monday against Dayton, pitching 8.0 shutout innings with two hits allowed, one walk and nine strikeouts, earning the win...Wells has made six starts for the Kernels, going 3-2, 1.57 ERA (34.1 IP, 6 ER) with six walks and 29 strikeouts...he was signed as an undrafted free agent August 11, 2014 out of Newcastle, Australia.

Not sure they'd be selling high on Gibson right now... But they can have the conversation...

This is his 3rd appearance out of the bullpen now. That was the plan all along. They had him start until he reached a certain number of innings and then would finish the year in the bullpen.

There's a decent chance he goes to Cedar Rapids when the E-Town season is complete. I'd think Diaz, Minier and Blankenhorn (plus maybe a couple of pitchers) also possible.

How so? We all kind of assumed he would be up as soon as the Trade Deadline passed. Ryan likely would have done the exact same thing.

We did add an article, so hopefully someone will merge this thread into that one. But, as I wrote in that article, they don't have to officially add Berrios until right before game time on Monday... which is after the deadline (which is in the afternoon). So much can happen before then. Duffey makes sense in an obvious kind of way, but I think there are several other options.

Rochester Democrat & Chronicle beat reporter Kevin Oklobzija reported first that Jose Berrios was summoned back to his manager Mike Quade's office late on Saturday night. Though there was no confirmation that Berrios was coming up, 1500ESPN's Darren Wolfson soon tweeted that he had heard that Berrios was coming up to the Twins. Soon after, the Star Tribune confirmed the Berrios will start for the Twins on Monday in Cleveland. Soon after, the Star Tribune confirmed the Berrios will start for the Twins on Monday in Cleveland. So now the question remains, What will the other half of the transaction be? With the trade deadline set for Monday afternoon, the possibilities are endless. The Twins don't need to add Berrios to their 25-man roster until Monday after the trade deadline (and obviously before the game), so it could be another 24+ hours before we know the other half of the transaction. What are the possibilities? The easiest, most straightforward move would be for the Twins to call up Berrios and option Tyler Duffey to AAA Rochester. Duffey has really struggled over the last several starts. The 25-year-old hasn't been able to capture the magic that he showed in his final nine starts last year when he was the Twins top starter. Of course, the Twins could make a trade, and with that there are several more possibilities. If they are able to trade a starter, Berrios could take that pitchers spot in the rotation and the rest of the rotation would just adjust. The Twins could, more likely, trade a reliever and then move a starter into the bullpen. Tommy Milone gave up four runs in Saturday night's game and was unable to get out of the sixth inning. He has had a frustrating season, though he has been much better in July. He seems like a candidate for a trade in August. Ricky Nolasco? Well, he's got that contract, but maybe a team liked what they saw on Friday night when he gave up just one run over eight innings. The Twins would obviously need to be creative to make a move on Nolasco. Fernando Abad and Brandon Kintzler could be on the move in the next 36 hours. Duffey could move to the bullpen where many believe his future may put him anyway because he just has two pitches. Milone or Nolasco could be pushed to the bullpen. In other words, the Twins needed to make sure they had a starter for Monday night. They don't have to announce this transaction until right before then, so the possibilities are fairly endless right now. Secondly, newly acquired Adalberto Mejia will likely take Berrios's spot in the Red Wings rotation early next week. The key to this transaction, of course, if the return of JO Berrios. His first stint with the Twins was not good. We saw glimpses of what he could become in his four starts, but he posted an ERA over ten and a WHIP over two. He needed to return to Rochester. He has clearly made some adjustments and earned his way back to the big leagues. The 22-year-old has been particularly great his last seven starts. In that time, he is 5-3 with a 1.46 ERA. In 55.2 innings, he has given up 31 hits, walked 15 and struck out 60 batters. Opponents have hit just .165/.229/.255 (.485) against him. He's ready for this opportunity. Don't expect him to be perfect, but let's hope to see some of the adjustments he made in Rochester. We should see some improvements. The team needs to live with his ups and downs and let him work through things at the big league level the rest of the way, the same way they need to let Byron Buxton, Miguel Sano, Jorge Polanco and Max Kepler play and learn and adjust. And those names and others should make Twins fans excited to watch the final two months of the season. View full article

The minor league affiliates had a full day with all six affiliates playing. There were a lot of top prospects who had big games, but the big news of the night came very late. It appears that Jose Berrios was told that he is heading up to Minnesota and will start on Monday. (Discuss here) Stephen Gonsalves and Fernando Romero were back on the mound on Saturday. In 7.1 innings, he gave up the three runs on seven hits and three walks. He struck out one. Sean Burnett got the final five outs, allowing just one hit. The offense did little, however. They accumulated just four hits. Reynaldo Rodriguez went 2-3 with his fourth double. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Chattanooga 9, Tennessee 1 Box Score Gonsalves was coming off a start with some mixed results, but on this night he was terrific. The left-hander gave up just one run on four hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out eight. He improves to 4-1 with a 2.79 ERA with the Lookouts. Ryan Eades struck out three over two scoreless innings. Tyler Jay came out of the pen for a perfect ninth which included a strikeout. The Lookouts bats supported Gonsalves well too. Stuart Turner led the way. He went 2-3 with a walk and his 13th and 14th doubles. Engelb Vielma went 2-4. Zach Granite went 2-5 with two RBIs. He also stole his 36th bag of the season. Mitch Garver went 1-3 with two walks. MIRACLE MATTERS Ft. Myers 2, Clearwater 3 Box Score Weather affected this game in Ft. Myers. Through three innings, Fernando Romero was pitching very well. The hard-throwing right-hander had given up three hits, but no runs. He had walked none and struck out two. And then the weather came and the game was in a rain delay for 2 hours and 23 minutes. When they returned, Romero was done and lefty Luke Westphal replaced him. Westphall gave up two runs on one hit and three walks. But Luke Bard came in and calmed things down. Bard went the next three innings and kept the score at 2-2. He gave up just two hits and struck out two. Todd Van Steensel came on and gave up one run in the 8th inning on one hit and two walks. He did strike out two. Brian Gilbert gave up just one hit in a scoreless ninth. Nick Gordon gave the Miracle a 2-0 lead in the third inning with a two-run single. However, the Miracle were unable to bunch any more hits together the rest of the game. They had seven hits, but no more runs. Trey Vavra added his 17th double. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 6, Kane County 1 Box Score Zander Wiel has been incredible the last month, and this was another big night for the slugger from Vanderbilt. He went 2-4 with his 24th double, his 11th home run and four RBI. Christian Cavaness went 2-4. Nelson Molina added his 11th double. Kernels pitchers had thrown two straight shutouts before this game. Their starter, Cody Stashak, threw five scoreless innings to extend that streak to 23 innings. He gave up four hits, walked three and struck out one. Andrew Vasquez came in and gave up one run on one hit over his two innings. He walked two and struck out one. Max Cordy worked the final two innings without allowing a run. He walked one and struck out one. E-TWINS E-NOTES Elizabethton 6, Bristol 3 Box Score The offense came through for the Twins in this game. Top pick Alex Kirilloff went 3-4 and drove in a run. He is now hitting .372. Amaurys Minier went 2-3 with a walk and his third and fourth doubles. Trey Cabbage went 2-4 with his first triple. Shane Carrier added his third home run. Also of note, Twins second-round pick, catcher Ben Rortvedt made his Appalachian League debut on Saturday night. He went 0-4 and played behind the plate. Sean Poppen made the start. He gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits, a hit batter and three walks in 4.1 innings. He struck out six. Quin Grogan hit one batter, but that was it, in his 1.2 innings. Alex Robinson struck out five over two scoreless, hitless innings, though he walked one. Colton Davis recorded his fifth save with a perfect ninth inning. GCL TWINS TAKES GCL Twins 9, GCL Red Sox 0 Box Score The Twins headed down Daniels Parkway to take on the Red Sox at Fenway South for a 10 am (eastern time) game to close out their week. Maybe the best news of the day was that outfielder Tanner English - who was named the organization’s minor league outfielder of the year in 2015 - played in his first rehab game. He went 1-2 with a walk and a three-run homer. He also ran down a ball in deep center field to help his pitcher. Aaron Whitefield had another strong game. He went 3-5 with his 18th stolen base. He also hit his first professional home run, a three-run blast. Dane Hutcheon went 2-3 with a walk. Justin Hazard went 2-5 with his first double. Zach Featherstone went 2-5 with his first double (note - that duplication was not a mistake). Jose Miranda hit his fifth double. Tyler Fox, a non-drafted free agent from Nebraska-Omaha, won his first game. He went seven shutout innings and gave up one hit. He walked one and struck out four. Matz Schutte struck out two in a perfect inning. Callan Pearce gave up one hit but struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning. Kevin Oklobzija from the Democratic and Chronicle in Rochester posted a couple of tweets that were interesting, and they were followed by a little verification/confirmation from Doogie Wolfson. What will the second move be? A trade? Duffey demoted? Milone DFAd? What do you think? I'm sure we'll find out soon.

This is kind of my thought ... trade him if you get a very good return, but definitely don't do it just to play Polanco - who may be almost as good as Dozier... (though likely more consistent offensively, maybe) Defense would probably be advantage Dozier. But, they need to play Polanco or trade him... I don't know.

If these are the big concerns for Dozier, I think they should love him up for another 5 years! Ha!

He measured in at 6-0 and 172 this spring.

I think Chad Allen is really good. He's only been back in the organization for like 3 years, but he's been a guy that players really like and learn from. He individualizes and gives ideas and works really hard. I talked to him about Vargas before the 2014 Futures Game.
