Correct. It's all about the individual's development. Stashak was more slow developing, and moved to the bullpen. And, where they start a season doesn't matter, especially at the upper levels because sometimes that dictated by minor league signings that they want to keep around for a little bit to see how they do and if there are immediate needs.

Yeah, I got an updated scouting report on Poppen the other day. When I saw him two years ago, he was 89-92 - which of course is enough velocity when combined with other stuff. He has a good slider and a changeup that is a work in progress... Now, as you pointed out, he is 94-96 with a really good slider (if sometimes a little inconsistent). He is definitely worth watching at this point.

Agreed. The one-day rest ERA for Parker doesn't mean a whole lot. Right now, he just is really struggling with control. That's the issue right now. But, over the last two years, he has 35 walks in 133.2 innings pitched (2.4 BB/9), so generally he has good control. At some point, he'll find it and he'll be fine. I mean, unless there is some sort of injury or underlying, but that doesn't seem to be it.

Over their previous seven games, the Miracle had scored a combined 15 runs. A look through the batting averages of players in the lineup (besides the red-hot Lewin Diaz and his .480 batting average) showed that the bats were cold. On Sunday, they scored 12 runs on 21 hits and all nine starters had at least two hits in the game. .Find out everything that happened happened in the Twins system on Sunday, starting with the transactions of the day TRANSACTIONS Infielder Drew Maggi promoted from Pensacola to Rochester.Infielder Joe Cronin promoted from Cedar Rapids to Pensacola.Hunter Lee promoted from extended spring training to Cedar Rapids.UPDATE on the Transactions: Please feel free to ask any questions and discuss Sunday’s games. Twins Minor League Report (4/14): Miracle Bats Bust Out
Seth Stohs posted an article in Minor Leagues
Find out everything that happened happened in the Twins system on Sunday, starting with the transactions of the day TRANSACTIONS Infielder Drew Maggi promoted from Pensacola to Rochester. Infielder Joe Cronin promoted from Cedar Rapids to Pensacola. Hunter Lee promoted from extended spring training to Cedar Rapids. UPDATE on the Transactions: AWARDS Each Sunday, the Twins announce their minor league hitter and pitcher of the week. This week, the awards went to: Pitcher of the Week: Devin Smeltzer Hitter of the Week: Travis Blankenhorn RED WINGS REPORT Rochester, Lehigh Valley Box Score Rains postponed this game. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader in July. BLUE WAHOO BITES Pensacola 4, Jacksonville 3 Box Score A three-run bottom of the sixth inning gave the Wahoos a lead that they were able to hold on to the rest of the way. Tanner English got the team on the scoreboard first. He hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the inning. He added a single later in the game. Luis Arraez went 2-for-3 with a walk. Brian Schales went 2-for-2 with a walk and was hit by a pitch. The big hit of that sixth inning was a double off the bat of Jimmy Kerrigan. Andro Cutura started and gave up three runs on eight hits over five innings. He struck out two batters. Sean Poppen came on and struck out four batters over two scoreless innings. Ryan Mason recorded his second save with two scoreless innings that included three strikeouts. MIRACLE MATTERS Ft. Myers 12, Clearwater 7 Box Score The Ft. Myers offense has generally been struggling early this season. On Sunday, they broke out. All of them broke out. The Miracle had 21 hits, and all nine starters had at least two hits. Ben Rortvedt, batting ninth, led the offense. He went 4-for-5 with two doubles and his first home run of the year. Trevor Larnach went 3-for-5 with a walk. Akil Baddoo and Royce Lewis were each 2-for-5 with a walk. Travis Blankenhorn extended his hitting streak to nine games as he went 2-for-5 with his third double. Ryan Costello went 2-for-5 and added his first homer of the year. Jose Miranda went 2-for-6. Michael Helman broke out a bit as he went 2-for-4 with a walk. Charlie Barnes was the recipient of the great run support. The left-hander gave up five runs on six hits over the first 5 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out four. Hector Lujan came on and gave up two unearned runs on two hits over 2 1/3 innings. Jacob Blank, called up on Saturday from extended spring training, made his first Miracle (and first full-season) appearance. He got one out, but he walked two batters. Alex Phillips came on and got the final two outs. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 2, Burlington 6 Box Score It was a rough start for right-hander Andrew Cabezas in his second Midwest League start. The deliberate right-hander found himself in a lot of full counts. Because of it, he threw a lot of pitches. In just four innings, he gave up six runs on three hits. However, he walked five and hit two others. He did strike out five batters as well. Zach Neff came on. The lefty struck out five over three scoreless innings. Jose Martinez worked the final two innings without giving up another run. Michael Davis had a bases-loaded single with one out in the bottom of the ninth to drive in a run. Hunter Lee hit a sacrifice fly to score Jacob Pearson. But that’s where the rally ended. The Kernels offense mustered just six hits in the game. Gabe Snyder had two of them. Andrew Bechtold singled to extend his hitting streak to five. Jeff Johnson from The Gazette in Cedar Rapids wrote his game story and included quotes from Gabe Snyder about his recent promotion to the Kernels. Castro was really good behind the plate today.... and he walked twice. He's 2-12 on the season with 3 walks. In Astudillo's last four games, he is 2-14 with one walk. And then there is #GarvSauce!! #TeamSauce

Regarding Marwin? It's way too early to worry about a slow start. Means nothing at this point. His role will be what it was intended to be as soon as Sano comes back. He'll be playing most every day all around the diamond. By season's end, he'll have an OPS between .694 and .759 as he has in four of the last five years. He's going to get about 450 at bats, which means he has about 425 more at bats to improve.

Dude's given up four base runners (1 hit, 3 walks) in 5 innings and has three saves. That's an ERA of 1.80 and a WHIP of 0.80. I'd say that's pretty good.

I watched the first three innings of the Red Wings game. Randy Cesar had his seventh error in seven games. There were a couple of balls called hits that could have been called errors. Wilin Rosario had two early passed balls. Crazy bad defense. The other thing that is interesting... AAA is now using the MLB baseballs... I wonder how many homers will be hit in AAA this year. Bailey Ober now has 12 shutout innings. Griffin Jax has 10 2/3 scoreless. I think that Devin Smeltzer is at 14 scoreless. Bryan Sammons is at 10 scoreless. Lewin Diaz is hitting .480.

What's really interesting is that last summer, the Dodgers moved him to the bullpen, and the Twins had him pitch in the bullpen last year. In fact, they sent him to the Arizona Fall League, in part, to work on working out of the bullpen. I was surprised to see them move him back to the rotation, and he's certainly making that look like a wise decision early this season.

A quick look at those top prospects, and they're all 19-21 and playing against guys who are 23-24 (obvious exceptions on both sides). Baddoo is playing his first games there. Miranda and Lewis weren't there for long. Jeffers, Larnach and Helman were 2019 picks trying to figure their way on and off the field still. My point isn't that we shouldn't expect them to improve. They are all immensely talented and most likely will work their way through it. Prospect status doesn't always equate to on-field stats and wins.

He's kind of on the Gonsalves timeline. And I know Gonsalves has told me that it was a good plan for him. Finish a year with 10-12 starts at a level. Learn stuff. Go to the offseason. Work on stuff. Go back there, make another 10-12 starts, move up about the halfway mark, and repeat all the way up. I was thinking about that as it relates to Balazovic, and I really like it. "Repeat the level" to me means spending a full year at a level. 10-12 starts isn't a lot at all. And strikeout pitchers tend to throw more pitches, and in the lower levels, there can be more 3-2 types of counts.

Alcala? Graterol? Duran? Quezada? Maybe Colina (more 95-98). There are a bunch of them in those upper nineties and into the triple digits.

That's a fair question and admittedly I'm looking at 1.) them being worst in the league in fielding percentage and 2.) watching parts of 3-4 of their games so far, and 3.) conversations. I think - and again, it's probably too early to make too many grand statements - that a lot of them are adequate defenders, average defenders or slightly below. Adn that probably plays OK on a team where you've got a few guys that are above average in those areas.. I mean, if Brent Rooker is in LF, it'll be a step or two or three down from Rosario. But you can adjust Buxton and Kepler two-three steps to their right and you help minimize it some. Also, I think that playing with really good defensive players around you helps you up your game. That's all philosophical and guessing, of course.

It might just be early in the season ,so the fielding percentage isn't a big deal. The OF isn't terrible, but there isn't a rangy CF in the group. They all do fine with what they get to. Wade is pretty good but again, probably not a CF (which is fine). The infield has struggled. Not a ton of range with Cesar, Torreyes or Rosales. Torreyes and Rosales are fine as 4th or 5th infielders. Cesar has really struggled early this year with grounders and with throws. Weather factors into all of this. Throwing, range, etc.

I don't know about putting him ahead of Graterol and maybe Duran, but Balazovic is good. I was probably wrong. 2017 was such a struggle, so I was a little hesitant to push him up too high despite the fact that he was really good in a dozen games for the Kernels last year. Then seeing him and talking to him this spring... he is definitely legit.

Graterol was good. Duran was good. Balazovic was the most dominant. Man he was good! Even the two hits in the fifth weren't real hard hit. As for Arraez, he's a fun guy to watch and he's come a long way. His ability now to play some 3B helps. I don't think he jumps to the big leagues unless it's a Polanco thing where they need a guy for like 2-3 days since he's on the 40-man... though they'd' go to Torreyes first. No need to push him up any time soon though. Eight games of good means about as much as Eight games of bad.

LaMonte Wade walked twice. https://twitter.com/TFTwins/status/1116521187914526721 The Red Wings, now 2-6, have played quite poorly early in the season. They have statistically been the worst defensive team in the International and from what I have watched, it is earned. BLUE WAHOO BITES Pensacola 4, Jacksonville 3 Box Score Brusdar Graterol picked up his first Double-A win on Thursday night with a real solid performance. The hard-throwing righty gave up three hits and walked three batters over 5 2/3 scoreless innings. He struck out four batters. He left the game with a runner on second and two outs. Tyler Jay came on and got the final out of the sixth inning quickly. https://twitter.com/TFTwins/status/1116547874874109953 Jay was charged with two runs (1oneearned) in the seventh inning. He gave up two hits and walked one in that inning. Dusten Knight came on and gave up a run in the eighth frame. But he pitched a scoreless ninth to preserve the win and earn his second save of the season. He struck out four in the two innings. And, as he does when he closes out a win, Knight does a backflip. https://twitter.com/SethTweets/status/1116528545847812102 The Blue Wahoos got three hits from Luis Arraez. Jordan Gore and Jaylin Davis each had a single and a walk. They got an RBI single from Mitchell Kranson to take the lead in the first inning. In the sixth inning, Jimmy Kerrigan came through with a two-run double to give the team a 3-0 lead. They added a fourth run on a error by the pitcher. Pensacola improved to 5-2. MIRACLE MATTERS Ft. Myers 0, Dunedin 5 Box Score Jhoan Duran made his second start of the season. He gave up single runs in the second and third innings. But he pitched pretty well again. In five innings, he gave up those two runs on three hits. He walked just one and struck out five batters. 46 of his 66 pitches were strikes. Melvi Acosta came on in relief and pitched pretty well, though it may not look it. Acosta gave up three runs (one earned) on three hits, a walk, and a hit batter over the final four innings. But he threw three scoreless innings before the three-run ninth. Acosta did get some help from his defense. He loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh inning, but Royce Lewis made a diving catch to his right to make a great catch that kept the Miracle in the ballgame at the time. Hopefully we’ll get some video at some point, but here is a report from someone who was there. https://twitter.com/LWOSRobMolnar/status/1116497746809229312 The Miracle offense managed just five hits in the game. Trevor Larnach had two hits and a walk. It was his second straight multi-hit game. The Miracle fall to 4-4 on the season. I think Norris signed with someone this week. I see that the Norris deal fell threw... That'll teach me to respond without looking ahead.- 96 replies

Good questions, thank you! 1.) As Doogie reported, Littell was the one that they initially wanted to call up. However because the season was less than ten days (it was nine) old, you can't call up an optioned player within 10 days unless there is an injury. That is me guessing, of course, but it's all I can come up with for the change of mind and needed DFAing of Austin. 2.) Correct. DeJong wouldn't have been able to pitch on Wednesday night... It'll be interesting to see when Rochester has him start next. 3.) I was just showing who is in Rochester as those could be the next guys called up. The ERAs hardly matter because the innings pitched are generally so small. Guilmet and Adams are over 30. Adams signed out of an indy league. But he is throwing 94-96 now. Maybe he's figured something out. I think you would take them calling up those guys as exactly what it is. Duffey, he's struggled and last year was rough, but he does have some stuff. In my opinion, with relievers from year to year (MLB signings or MiLB signings),, you never know. 4.) Magill doesn't have the ERA/WHIP/FIP stuff that you'd like to see, but I love his arm. I'm fine with giving him opportunities. Addison Reed? I mean ,when healthy, he's terrific. One of the most consistent relievers in baseball when he was healthy. Last year was the first year he wasn't healthy. He was good early last year too before the injury.- 96 replies

I think we can all agree that the first guys promoted from Rochester to attempt to help the Twins bullpen early this season did not perform well in their first outings. So, who else is in Rochester? Let’s get to know the rest of the Red Wings bullpen. The Twins wanted to call up Zack Littell last weekend but because the season was not yet ten days old, they were unable to. Instead, they put Chase De Jong back on the 40-man roster and Designed Tyler Austin for Assignment. At the time, the Twins needed someone available in the bullpen who could eat some innings after Jake Odorizzi didn’t get out of the first inningFriday night. De Jong was not needed after all in Philadelphia thanks to good starts by Michael Pineda and Jose Berrios. He got his first opportunity on Tuesday night against the Mets. He came in to finish the ninth inning with the Twins leading 14-4. He needed 46 pitches to finish the ninth and gave up four runs and six base runners. Following the game, he was returned to Rochester since he would be unable to pitch for the Twins for several days. Lefty Andrew Vasquez, the easy choice for 2018 Twins Daily Minor League Relief Pitcher of the Year, was recalled to take De Jong’s spot. Unlike De Jong, Vasquez was thrown right into a tough situation. With two outs in the fifth inning last night, Jake Odorizzi loaded the bases with a walk to opposing starter Noah Syndergaard. With left-handed hitting Brandon Nimmo due up, Rocco Baldelli called on the left-hander who struck out 108 batters in 69+ innings last year. Simply put, it did not go well for Vasquez. He couldn’t throw strikes and frankly, wasn’t close. He hit Nimmo (to put one run on the board). Then he walked both Pete Alonso and Robinson Cano to score two more runs. His fastball topped out at 87 mph and he couldn’t command the slider at all. I will advocate for not giving up on Andrew Vasquez, and I would assume that most of you would look at that outing as a case of nerves in his return to the big leagues. While he had struck out four batters in 1 1/3 innings in his one Red Wings appearance, he also walked two batters and gave up a hit. I’m not advocating that Vasquez needs to be optioned right away, though it would be understandable. But if he is, or on a higher level, if at any time the Twins need to call back to Rochester looking for some relief help, what options are there? Below you’ll find the current group of Red Wings relievers, any of who could be an option at some point this season. THE RELIEVERS IN ROCHESTER (in alphabetical order) AUSTIN ADAMS Age - 32 MLB Experience - Parts of three seasons (2014-16) with Cleveland. 53 games, 58 2/3 innings, 6.29 ERA. 2019 Red Wings Stats - 2 Games, 4.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K The Twins signed Adams late last year out of independent ball and he pitched briefly for Chattanooga. This year, is hitting 94-96 for the Red Wings in the early goings. Presumably, Derek Falvey is quite familiar with him due to his years in Cleveland. TYLER DUFFEY Age - 28 MLB Experience - Parts of four seasons (2015-18) with the Twins. 111 games (37 starts), 287 innings, 5.46 ERA. 2019 Red Wings Stats - 2 Games, 4.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K Duffey made such a strong impression on Twins fans late in the 2015 season, nearly catapulting a surprising team to the playoffs. He hasn’t been able to duplicate that performance since and was moved to the bullpen a few years ago. He has the curveball and spin rate that teams love. RYAN EADES Age - 27 MLB Experience - None 2019 Red Wings Stats - 2 G, 4.1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K Eades made a strong impression during an impressive run in big league spring training this year. He showed a big fastball which reached into the mid-90s. He also showed his array of pitches. Before this season, he had just seven games of Triple-A experience. PRESTON GUILMET Age - 31 MLB Experience - Parts of five seasons (2013-18) with Tampa Bay, Cleveland, St. Louis, Baltimore, Toronto, Milwaukee. 27 games, 33 innings. 9.27 ERA. 2019 Red Wings Stats - 2 G, 4.1 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K. Guilmet has had a long career. He’s pitched for six teams in the big leagues to go with several other organizations in the minor leagues. He’s got enough stuff to keep getting opportunities. MIKE MORIN Age - 27 MLB Experience - Parts of five seasons (2014-18) with Angels. 186 games, 174 innings, 4.66 ERA. 2019 Red Wings Stats - 2 G, 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K. Born in Minnesota, his family soon moved to the Kansas City area, but he’s still got family in the area. It would certainly be a thrill for him to play for the Twins. Morin pitched between 47 and 60 games each year out of the Angels bullpen between 2014 and 2016. He’s been hurt the last two years, but he appears to be fully healthy again. He’s a low-90s guy with a really, really good changeup. JAKE REED Age - 26 MLB Experience - None 2019 Red Wings Stats - 2 G, 3.0 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 5 K Reed moved up to AA really quickly after being drafted by the Twins in 2014. He’s been up and down ever since, but he was remarkable for the Red Wings after June 1st last year (23 G, 37.2 IP, 1.43 ERA, .167 opponents batting average). Walks always a concern, but Reed gets a lot of movement. His fastball is 95-97, and he’s got a sharp slider too. . FERNANDO ROMERO Age - 24 MLB Experience - Debuted with the Twins in 2018. Made 11 starts, 55 2/3 innings. 4.69 ERA. 2019 Red Wings Stats - 2 G, 5.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K Romero was really good for his first four MLB starts last year and then struggled the rest of the way. It was surprising that the Twins decided so quickly in spring training that he would pitch out of the bullpen. He struggled in spring training and was optioned to the Red Wings. He’s off to a fast start. In his 3 1/3 hitless, no-walk innings on Wednesday, he was getting swings and misses on 97 and 98 mph fastballs. Currently DJ Baxendale (27) and Zack Weiss (26) are on the Red Wings injured list. *Note that the 2019 Red Wings Stats are for just two games, so the sample size is definitely small. THE STARTERS Chase De Jong returns to the Red Wings starting rotation. The other starters in the Red Wings rotation are 23-year-old RHP Zack Littell, 23-year-old LHP Lewis Thorpe, 24-year-old RHP Kohl Stewart, 25-year-old RHP Sean Poppen and 27-year-old MLB veteran, LHP Justin Nicolino. LHP Stephen Gonsalves is on the IL as well and should be back in early May. These guys are options if and when a long-reliever might be needed. They could also be summoned to the Twins when a starter is needed, such as in a doubleheader situation. THE INJURED LIST As a reminder, right-handers Matt Magill and Addison Reed, along with LHP Gabriel Moya are on the injured list. We haven’t heard updates on them recently. They are also options to join the big league bullpen when they are ready, though a rehab stint would seem very likely for all three as they have not pitched in a long time. THE FREE AGENTS I’ll just throw this tweet from Nick Nelson here: So, do you have a current hierarchy of who the Twins should call up next as they have needs? How about breaking that out between whether they need a long reliever, or a lefty, or a short-term option versus a more long-term guy? Share your thoughts below. Click here to view the article
