  1. With that many walks - we'll never have to worry about him pitching to contact . Seriously - Deduno is having a nice run, but it's probably best to lower expectations to stop gap guy.
  2. Regarding Baker - someone with more knowledge than me will have to chime in. I believe it's his option year. I don't know if that means we have to offer him $6.5M again. If so - I don't see that happening since he probably won't pitch at all before Spring Training.
  3. Hendricks has been dominating AAA. 7 innings/7K's and the W tonight. Overall, 8-2, 2.32 ERA/0.98 WHIP. He's ready. Great game by Deduno tonight. But I just don't see him sustaining this with the amount of people he walks each game. I don't think he's going to be a long term answer. But a great stop-gap.
  4. #1 = Free Agent, Vet/Innings Eater #2 = Gibson #3 = Diamond #4 = Blackburn (He's signed - so he'll pitch) #5 = Hendricks Probably won't strike fear in a lot of teams - but you never know. I would never have dreamed Dedundo would shut out Boston for 6 either.
  5. But doesn't the fact that Gardy used him tonight in a non-save situation go against the theory of only using Perkins when he can pad his save totals? I just look at is as all the guys have to pitch at some point. It seems like Gardy divides up the workload by going to his "A team" (Perkins/Burton) when they have a lead. And he uses the "B-Squad" when they are tied or behind. That's just my observation - generally speaking. I'm not saying that's official policy or anything - just my observation.
  6. "Since we drafted him, that's as good as I've seen him throw the ball," Antony said. "More velocity than I saw when he was at Rochester and before that, because he was consistently 93-94 [mph], and his slider was 84-86 [mph] with good life." Good to see one of our guys come back with more velocity. Sounds like they will be moving him up a level soon. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120802&content_id=36013344&notebook_id=36016578&vkey=notebook_min&c_id=min
  7. I think if you always went with the "use your best reliever" approach, it certainly would lead to a few more wins...at least at the start of the season. Of course, things would probably even out after your best relievers end up on the DL with arm problems. Other guys have to get outs. It was a tie game. Three more outs doesn't guarantee a win. I have no problem with them holding Perkins out of that game. It's a lost year and a meaningless game for us. No sense burning out Perkins arm this year.
  8. It looks like he played 2nd his 1st year as a pro (A-) and then was switched to OF. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's probably a reach. Casilla will probably be gone next year. But I think they have Carroll signed for next year. So, a mix of Carroll, Dozier, Escobar, Floriman will probably cover SS, 2nd and UT. Plus it would not shock me if they try to get some value out of Nishi (I think he still has a year too). So, assuming he isn't embarrassing himself at AAA he could be in the mix next year too (*shudder*).
  9. I've read this as well, but it doesn't match the actual data I've found. Specifically, in his one game this year, Game Day had him throwing high 80's and only occassionially getting up at 91/92 (not consistently). That is consistent with Fangraph's which has his average fastball at 89.8 mph. I fear the talk of him being a hard thrower is all BS unless he's hurt or something.
  10. Gray has some interesting splits this year: 23.0 innings, 8 BB, 16 K, 3.91 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, .244 BAA (HOME) 17.2 innings, 11 BB, 4 K, 7.13 ERA, 1.92 WHIP, .311 BAA (AWAY) I understand it's small sample. Still - I thought it was interesting - especially the strikeouts. Regardless. The way this team is burning up arms, I'm confident they'll get a look at everyone they want to see by year end.
  11. I'm by no means a Bill Smith defender, but I do believe he had a plan - it just simply failed miserably. The Santana trade should have netted us a minimum of a couple good young arms out of Humber/Mulvey/Guerra. And Gomez was billed as "5 tool" (as always - over used). Then giving up Bartlett/Garza for Delmon was going to be the the piece de resistance. Whoops. Santana/Garza/Bartlett where three pretty good players who netted little or nothing back. The combination of those failed trades and the injuries to M&M pretty much sunk the team for a couple years.
  12. I'm not sure if he threw 96 at one time, but I checked his last game day (2008) and he was topping out at high 80's. Fangraph's had him averaging 90 that year. He's a seat filler at AAA. Let's hope they can trade for some better arms before the deadline.
