Twins should be proactive with Sano and his contract

Way too early to discuss a contract like this. Has he even played a game at AA yet? You need to at least wait until he steps foot on the major league field. Kubel was injured in the fall league and lost roughly 2 seasons of playing time. And while he eventually produced on the major league level, he was never at the levels he was originally projected at. If you want to discuss these contract terms you should wait until he reaches arbitration. At that point you will have a good sense of his long term potential. -
There is another reason for not calling up Gibson right now that hasn't been touched upon. There is little disagreement that Gibson will be up sometime this year. He will also most likely be in the rotation for several years after he is called up. The same cannot be said about the other pitchers that the Twins are looking at: Walters, Deduno, Pelfrey, Hernandez, DeVries and to some extent Worley and Hendricks. These pitchers need to be evaluated as well. Most are either out of options or will no longer be under team control next year or the year after. The Twins need to know if they should be kept around next year as well. Gibson WILL be here, these others may not. A few of them had some success with the Twins before injuries sidetracked them. We need to know if they can be counted on. Remember there were several college pitchers drafted in last year's draft and others in the lower levels that should be ready to move up the ladder next year. We cannot hold onto these pitchers and clog the upper levels of the minors if the others are ready. By the end of the year we should know whether they should be kept around or be released. Better to know sooner rather than later. I don't want any doubt in the front office's mind that these players should or shouldn't be retained. Several of them were probably brought back and given second chances due to injuries they had last year. I would rather see them all get their fair shot and if they can't perform at the major league level, then they should be sent on their way.

I think you misread the rule on that one. A deflected ball going over the outfield fence is a homerun. A ball that hits the top of the fence and goes over is a home run. You can argue an error on a deflection but it would still count as a home run. The only instances where it would be a double would be if it went through the fence or deflected over the wall in foul territory. -
Although I would like to see Gibson pitch at the MLB level sooner rather than later, he should definitely have a couple more starts at AAA. Wasn't this his first complete game this year? 114 pitches? It would be nice to see if he recovers from this long outing before bringing him up. Besides, the extra time would allow the current starting staff to shake itself out. I see three possible players (Pelfrey, Worley & Hernandez) for replacement. Two more starts should reveal who needs to be replaced or for someone to reveal an injury that they have been hiding. I don't know how a Mastroianni roster move discussion came out of this article but, as far as Mastroianni goes, he is still on the DL and a return date is not close. Between now and then, anything could happen. A trade, an injury, a rehab setback or improvement/slump of any of the current roster would affect the roster move. It could be months before a move is needed. As of right now, he is not on the team and is not ready to play. If a roster move for an outfielder is needed, perhaps the discussion should be limited to players who are currently healthy or ready to play.

A low level affiliate in Duluth would be nice but I don't think the numbers would work. Yes, there is the UMD students to draw from, but classes are usually out during the summer. I have never attended a Huskies game, but I have to question the 1000 fans per game number. With those numbers you would see the nearby parking lots filled more often. During the Dukes most recent tenure here they had attendance problems which led the team to move to Indiana. I remember a playoff game with attendance under 400. While the Huskies have survived here for a few years, these are unpaid college eligible players, not paid players with a payroll needing to be supported by attendance. The 100 year old Wade Stadium is a nice vintage park but is in need of major upgrades to support a MLB affiliate. There has been talk since professional baseball returned in the 1990's to upgrade this park, but the local money is not there to fix it. While the field itself has always been maintained, the seating, concessions and restrooms are not what you would expect to find in a MLB affiliate stadium. I would love to see a team here. But I just can't see it happening. -
I note that you are using LAST YEAR'S revenue numbers but THIS years payroll. I think coming into this season everyone, including management, did not project that this year's team would be able to contend for a playoff spot. With that as the projected performance, what did you think the projected revenue would be? More? Not likely. You would have to assume attendance would be down from the past two years. If attendance is down, then concessions and ballpark revenue would most likely drop as well. How much was it projected to drop? I don't know but the Twins did the math. I am sure the Phillies did the same. The Phillies were coming off a playoff season and were projected to contend again. If they thought they would be in the situation they are in right now, they may have spent differently. The Phillies are now involved in trade rumors because they have to adjust their spending to take into account a reduced revenue projection for the rest of the year.
