  1. An interesting thought: The original Fort Wayne franchise (early 90s) was a Twins' affiliate (Wizards). Wonder whether there is any interest there. And I think that based on the E-town team success and the Beloit success, the Twins might have the upper hand in putting a good product on an A ball field.
  2. No chance in hey to been polled, because of the (false) assumption that only people who live in MN are Twins' fans (and my position on how I feel about Gardy and his buddies is not a secret)... But what really gets me and I think it is ridiculous is that the same fan/media base who drove Childress out of Minnesota wants to keep Gardy despite the fact (yes it is a fact, look it up ) that Childress' teams as a whole were more successful that Gardy's teams... just sayin' politics (and some lutefisk lefse tacos and tire commercials)
  3. Yeah. 40-man roster and ST invite. Let me put it this way: He deserves a spot more than Blackburn does
  4. Interesting tidbit that Rosario and Sano are heading to FL to the instructional league before they report to their winter league teams
  5. way past his prime by then and way too many OF/DH prospects in the system to extend him.
  6. No argument about Achter from here I think that one of the wunderkids of the 2012 draft with 15ish K/9 in SS ball should probably be mentioned for posterity, but I suspect that these guys will have their chance next season
  7. Now that Perkins got a few saves, I guess he is a "proven" closer in the head of the manager of the millennium, so he has no problem using him... Still... As far as closing/late inning relieving prototypes, I think that the 1988 Davey Johnson Mets were about as successful as anyone (other than those 3 headed closer Reds who came later.) They had a two headed closer beast: Roger McDowell RHP and Randy Myers LHP (Plus a great set-up guy in Terry Leach). Use the two closers whereever appropriate the 8th or the 9th inning, plus have a beast of a setup man to take care of the 7th. So all you need is your starters to go 6 with a lead. I'd love to see the Twins find a RHP compliment to Perkins (Burton ain't it) and keep Burton as the set up guy. Maybe one of those kid closers they drafted this year will fit the bill in 2014-15. (Or #FreeAnthonySlama meanwhile )
  8. Actually, according to Souhan, Ryan said the "Elite FA Pitching Market is thin" Yeah. I would have to agree with Ryan. Actually non-existent. So you got to trade Span (and Morneau and maybe prospects) to fix the rotation. And unless the rotation is fixed the Twins will not content so they will be wasting Morneau's last season and Span's high value.
  9. I beg to differ. Gibson has the upside of a number 2 (and he never reached that upside in the minors btw). And we are talking about 1 of the 5 potential starters (maybe) in 2013. Methinks that a team that hit rock bottom 2 years in a row should have bigger (and older) fish to fry (prospect lists not withstanding)
  10. I know that you spent a lot of time thinking about this, but the thing I put in bold up there bugs me. And that rotation will not go anywhere (Diamond is a number 3 starter at best, so you need a couple more
  11. Look at all the numbers you want to spin what you want, but you have to consider the conditions in which the numbers were generated. If in 2011 Gibson was playing slightly injured to total wreck, then any statistics about him for that year are worthless. 2012 is about rehab. 3 starts in 2010 is not a large enough sample size. Whatever really. Check his pure healthy AA numbers. As far as other Twins' pitchers go, his success in the minors has been very limited. Here are Kevin Slowey's MiLB numbers, here are Glen Perkins', here are Nick Blackburn's. Compare those with Gibson's. We all know how all those 3 turned out as starters in the majors. And Slowey's numbers were hideous in the minors. Gibson's are at the Blackburn scale. just sayin'
  12. Here is the thing about that era (and the previous one btw, 'cause rhoids were around then too) : Nobody knows whether anyone used unless someone was caught. My personal view about this thing (steroids) has changed so many times. Mainly because the caught/not-caught thing is so random (and hey is Braun "caught"? In my mind the way he got out of it was the way OJ got out of another it...)
  13. There are a few variables here: - The Nationals have the best record in baseball and are lined up for a post-season run (not sure where the Twins will be in 2013, hope they are there) - Strasburg was a proven top of the order stater in the majors before his surgery. I feel that Gibson has not had eye popping numbers above high A. (Career AAA: 4.72 ERA, 1.402 WHIP, 8.4 K/9, 3.33 K/BB (23 GS); AA: 3.68 ERA, 1.215 WHIP, 7.5 K/9 and 3.5 K/BB (16 GS) - Cole De Vries type of numbers...) So we really cannot compare them and the situations the Nats and the Twins are facing.
  14. If Oliva were a middle infielder, a C or a CF he might have had a case to be a borderline candidate. Got to compare with other corner OFs turned DH. And he is just not there. Remember, it is a cumulative acknowledgement. He had less that 2000 career hits, less than 1000 career RBIs, less than 300 career HRs. These numbers are not even close. Here is a test: These are the numbers of his teammate Bob Alison. These and these are the numbers of 2 borderline hall of famer OFs of pretty much the same era who just barely made it. These are the numbers of another borderline OF who did not make it. Whose numbers are Tony's closest to?
  15. Should they? No Will they? Cannot remember the last season they did not shop for a middle infielder of one type or another... (looked it up, it was 2007 when Bartlett and Castillo, who finished 2006 as the starters, began 2007 as the starters as well, but that was the year of the revolving door at 3B: Punto/L Rod/Butcher/Watkins/etc)
  16. This aerial mockup looks like one of those man-made island resorts in the Arabic Peninsula $38 M investment? Wow.
  17. One of these 2 Benson? Or George?
  18. That is a thing to see indeed The link to the Twins' top 20 rankings is here and it is nuts after the top 5. It is unsigned so it would be interesting to see who did that. The Morales and the Williams rankings are really curious, in light of a horrid season for the former and the signing of at least 3-4 better relievers this season for the latter...
  19. If Rosario was an outfielder, absolutely... But as a second baseman Rosario makes it close. Just not that much middle infield talent
  20. Interesting.... Ben Badler (BA) was tweeting that Arcia might crack the top 50. That might mean at least 3, probably 4 Twins in a top 50
  21. I think that Ortiz and Morales would be subject to the AAA part of the rule 5 draft and Bigley to the MLB part of the same draft this season so a team can have them for practically nothing On the other hand, the Twins should deal from a strength. Too many OFs: Arcia, Hicks, Kepler, Buxton, Benson etc (Revere, Parmelee, Sano/Harrison) equals a bottleneck. So the Twins should deal some. And the higher they deal the better the return. I would have zero problem is they deal Arcia or Hicks (but not both) for an equally rated SP prospect. Buxton cannot be traded, Kepler is about to shoot really high in value and Benson dropped. The Twins have to sell high. Point in case Angel Morales. Few seasons ago he was a top prospect, now... They missed the window of opportunity.
  22. I totally agree with this, with the exception of this little thing: as a matter of fact his k/9 ratio indicated that he has been blowing batters away in every level. Even in his much maligned MLB SSS 7 IP he has a 10.3 K/9
  23. I'll take my shot at this. In the past 2-5 years Fort Myers or more noticeably Lee County has expressed interest to acquiring a 3rd Spring Training team. However since they have expressed their interest they have built the Red Sox a new $80 million stadium and are in the final plans to put $30 million into renovations for the Twins. It says that the Nationals have expressed interest of moving to Fort Myers but I'm sure they would only do it for a publically funded stadium and facilities. The only thing would be is if Lee County told the Twins the only way they would renovate the stadium is with the Nationals as co-tenants but I really don't know. They have been talking with the Nationals about that even after the Red Sox facilities were up. They were talking up till the primary elections changed the make up of the commission. And btw totally unrelated to Hammond Stadium. That would be exclusively Twins' territory in ST.
  24. As far as 40 man roster spots go: there is one open moving Capps to the 60 day DL will open another moving Span to the 60 day DL will open another So it is not like there is no flexibility left there
