  1. The wrestling world lost its first "legend" of the year in Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka. He was 73.
  2. As far as the Angels are concerned, they have a rough system, but they have brought in a number of high-ceiling/low-floor type of players. If Thaiss is raking like no one's business in AA in July, is there a monster difference between he and Bellinger? They have a few guys who could be high-end guys in a year.
  3. Coffey looked very different after that flagrant foul. That was a big issue in the offense. His aggressive slashing in the couple games I'd watched so far were a big part of the offensive rotation, and when he was tentative, it led to guys not being in the right position offensively many times.
  4. Thanks for that, by the way!
  5. Very solid night tonight. I posted this on Twitter, but it is absolutely crazy when you watch a Russell Westbrook game and think he's just playing terrible compared to his normal game, and look up and he has a triple double (quadruple double if you add in the turnovers).
  6. I think Nolan Arenado did better than either today. He got more money, signed for two years, set the market on that second year, and still has one more year of arbitration after the current deal ends that will be in the $20M range.
  7. The prospects are very, very good, though. They got two guys who are very high-ceiling, low-floor types, but both are guys are who could very possibly end up in the top 10 Rays and even top 100 overall prospects. Yarbrough is a favorite of mine, and Vargas has legit power, though he's probably a 3B going forward.
  8. One of the reporters I heard mentioned that the Spartans are essentially the perfect kryptonite for the Gophers team this year, and that they really won't run into that this year in the conference outside of the Spartan.
  9. Absolutely they're shedding money. They've been trying to shed money for a while. They've entertained offers on Archer, Odorizzi, Smyly, and even Longoria this winter to shed cash. One thing Smith does give them is a speed element that they have nowhere else on the team. He's not a center fielder by any other reason than he's fast (he has terrible routes to balls and calling his arm "average" would be a compliment), but he has true 80 grade speed on the 20-to-80 scouting scale, which allows him to cover up a lot of bad jumps for now. I've said for a while that he has a Juan Pierre upside.
  10. Their farm system really wasn't that limited. It was horribly mismanaged, but it had a ton of talent. Dipoto completely overhauled the people running the development system, and the industry raved about the difference in a single year in the approach of the team. They took the better performance of many of their players and spun them into deals to win at the big league level while they have a number of older players (Felix, Cano, Cruz), and then they'll be able to crack down into their system again, with guys like Kyle Lewis and Tyler O'Neill ready quite soon, Mike Zunino back on track after a development system that knew what they were doing with him, a whole load of pitching such that losing Gohara is losing one of the few "elite" arms they had, but only eliminated one of 5 guys they had in their system that topped triple digits - as a starter!
  11. I like what the Mariners are putting together for sure.
  12. And then Dipoto can't sit still: Mariners trade OF Mallex Smith, LHP Ryan Yarbrough, IF Cesar Vargas Rays trade LHP Drew Smyly
  13. The two most active GMs in the game are at it again: Braves trade OF Mallex Smith and RHP Shae Simmons Mariners trade LHPs Luiz Gohara and Thomas Burrows
  14. Well, now there's discussion from the Braves guys that the Dodgers are inquiring on their 2B options. Interesting. Wonder if the Braves may have pushed the price on the Twins up enough to get the Dodgers out of bidding in order to get their own deal.
  15. A few Twins fans in this thread have panicked over the Fernandez news. The guy first petitioned for instatement with Yasmany Tomas and was finally cleared in December 2015, yet it took over a year to sign. Something's up there, so I'd put the likelihood of him being their answer at VERY low. Good flyer type, though.
  16. No, I turn them on when I can, but I will say that attempting to get tickets when I was in the cities turned me off from following the team too closely. For a team that hadn't yet done anything, they were wanting prices like they were coming off a solid playoff run, let alone even making the playoffs.
  17. Wow. Coffey was impressive to watch last night. I'd not seen the team yet this year. They have a lot of athleticism and depth. There's also plenty of immaturity, which could bite them come tournament time, but they're definitely fun to watch!
  18. That's their prerogative. I heard over the last few months how "positive" I was on prospects from all teams, so my write ups are not positive on Braves guys due to my team allegiance. I pride myself on being critical where criticism is deserved and complimentary where it is also deserved. However, one of the recurring themes in this thread is the scouting of stat lines. While sometimes you can see things in a stat line in the minor leagues, stats, like team wins, are not the goal of the minor leagues. It is development of the player to become a future major leaguer. There are often a load of things going on that may positively or negatively affect statistics due to environment, mechanical alterations, or age-relative-to-level. Those things can't just be determined in stats, and throwing out stats only in a minor league argument is missing a big component of what is going on, whether we're discussing the Braves or any other team.
  19. The Phillips trade was nixed in November but finally reported now because it hadn't gotten out. From the Braves beat reporters, there was never any actual trade. The Braves asked the Reds to see if Phillips would be amenable to a deal before they even started talking names, and Phillips said no. That was at the GM meetings. The Braves have since signed Sean Rodriguez to do a lot of what they had hoped Phillips would provide. They've been in on Dozier, but like with Sale, Quintana, and Archer, they're only in if the price is right. Albies was only on the table in those three for Sale, not the other two, just FYI.
  20. They're not at all the same pitcher. I mentioned earlier that the Braves overhauled his mechanics and his pitch approach, and it took time for Newcomb to work with the pitching coaches to develop comfort in that new approach and delivery. He finished the season on an absolute tear, and it was very obvious in watching him when he became comfortable on the mound. That led to the walk rate this season as it dropped tremendously at the end of the season. I'd say by mid-season 2017, it'd not be surprising if Newcomb was considered among the top 10 pitching prospects in the game, if he's still in the minor leagues.
  21. There can also be reasons behind that walk rate as well if he's working on something with the team, as I mentioned.
  22. He's been on the market for a while. I'm curious what the hold up was as he was a highly regarded contact guy with good fielding skills.
  23. I've mentioned before what was going on with Newcomb and his walk rate early on in the season.
  24. Absolutely, just know how semantics can get overblown, so making sure of that. I had Alvarez inside my top 10 based on what I heard around the league along with my own viewing. He's going to be very, very high on lists this offseason when all is said and done.
  25. Say what?! I think you're misinterpreting numbers here...unless you're doing the stretch of going by their offseason list last year that ranked Jay as a top 10 left handed prospect, but still not a top 10 overall pitching prospect. Of course, MLB is out on an island on Jay compared to the rest of the world, basically, so there's that. De Leon, in the same list you posted, was the #8 pitcher OVERALL, regardless of hand.
