  1. One name not brought up in this thread that was mentioned a few times online tonight and is someone I know the Braves are familiar with is Graterol. He's got a huge upside, but he's a pretty "unknown" guy right now, so he could be the kind of high upside, low ceiling guy that gets a deal like this done.
  2. The Braves don't need a catcher on the 40-man. They'd go for Garver because they have a load of catchers at AA or lower and could use one that may be ready in 2018, but they have Murphy's in house.
  3. No reason to bring in Vielma. Nowhere to play him.
  4. They gave up a piece expected to be part of their major league bullpen. Prospect rank really doesn't matter at that point. Then you have one live arm with difficulty finding the strike zone and a gritty second baseman in the low minors with good pedigree. It was a pretty decent package of players to give up.
  5. They follow me on Twitter. I spent about 2.5 hours answering questions about the Twins system from Braves fans that have read me as a Braves writer for the last 4 years LOL I retweeted Seth's post that he had checked on the minor league lineups, which is I'm sure how that info got out as well. Matt got most of his info from me over the course of the night, though he's plenty knowledgeable in his own right on prospects.
  6. Martinez was the clear top of the market. There's no reason that same deal isn't available July 31st. Hold out on him for the best deal available and see his value go up as lesser pieces go off the market.
  7. Terrible return is what I would say. Worst farm system in the league in Arizona, and they can't even get one of the two legit prospects in the system in the deal...
  8. They got a very solid haul. I'd have gone after different players, but the guys they got are highly regarded in the game.
  9. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Initially injured sliding head first into home in a 9-run game when he hit it against the catcher's guard at the plate.
  10. I think one thing not mentioned on here is that the Twins would have to pay a premium in prospects to acquire Quintana because they are trading in division. I'd probably say you headline a deal with two of Gordon/Romero/Gonsalves, then add in one of Javier/Diaz/Kirilloff, and likely one more upside guy in the realm of Baddoo, Graterol, or Balazovic just to get to the table, and it may take two of that second group to get the deal done in division. To get Q could hurt the system depth for sure, but that doesn't mean getting an equivalent starter on the market will...
  11. I will plug into this that Javier is considered an almost certain shortstop, and an elite defensive 2B/3B if he is moved off of short. Jimenez was considered a likely DH. Big arm, but routes, instincts, glove are all below average in the outfield, in spite of the highlight play at the Futures Game last season. That also goes into a GM's evaluation.
  12. He's stated before that he didn't want to play beyond his mid-30s as he wanted to be home for his family, and from all accounts that I've been able to find, that's why he's making this choice. If that's the case, then good on him as he's made multiple millions of dollars and doesn't really "need" the game.
  13. He's worth more to the Rays than anyone else right now as they're currently in one of the WC spots.
  14. Crawford was not in the top 50 for BA's midseason list.
  15. No kidding. That was perhaps the most awesome part of that story!
  16. Not surprising the Sox went for this over some of the "depth" deals that have been mentioned rumored going back to offseason. Hahn has said they want to go for top-end guys when they make a deal, not a spread of guys. However, I do like that in every deal they've picked up a flyer guy that I could really see turning out well. Rose in this deal has some prodigious right-handed power, and if he could polish his zone judgement, he could be a big bat for the middle of an order. Could never develop that zone judgement and be nothing as well, but a good flyer at the back of a deal like this.
  17. ...with one of my heroes of writing! John Sickels is one of the guys who really fanned the flame of my interest in prospects in his ESPN days and has kept it up for years since. I interviewed him for Puckett's Pond on his career and his Twins fandom. I figured it'd be a fun read for those here: http://puckettspond.com/2017/07/13/interview-prospect-writer-minnesota-twins-fan-john-sickels/
  18. And I'm completely fine with it being deleted altogether from mine, but I just don't want incorrect things in there. PMs were sent.
  19. I have that, but I find nowhere to alter the "biography" section under the "Community Stats" area. I've been able to edit the about me and other such things, but not that specific little bit.
  20. Exactly, the Braves have a couple guys like this in the system right now, one listed on an active roster and one not, and they just drafted another from a military academy who has future service to fulfill (though his is one year left). The team certainly should know this information going into the draft. In the case of Jax, he would not have been there for the Twins to select in the 3rd if not for the uncertainty the team is currently experiencing, so this was part of the risk involved. Straight from the Baseball America report on him pre-draft:
  21. In the "Community Stats" segment of the profile, there is a biography section. This now has incorrect information for me, but I am unable to find where I would edit it. I am blind, but could someone help me to see?!
  22. It's not a "read". It's talking with people inside the organization. The team's intention is to fill the rotation with young pitchers, hence needing an arm that handles multiple innings, not something in the current bullpen or something any of the relievers on the current 40-man can do. It's still an issue that the team is now using the option train to handle instead of having a long guy, having moved Akeel Morris up this week and optioned a starter down to get to the All-Star break. There are a lot of guys within the organization who loved Colon, and a lot that wanted him released without DFA'ing him, but the front office has turned DFA's into at least org filler gold in the past, so they attempted to do the same with Colon. They ended up having to release him due to no interest in him at his salary. The Braves handled things as classy as they could with a guy who didn't want to do what they were asking him to do in order to get the money they were paying him. Rather than have him be an issue, he was DFA'd and eventually released.
  23. Once again, the public story and the private story are two different stories...
  24. Well, publicly, yes. However, when he was asked to move to a non-starter role, that "mentor" role suddenly shifted significantly. That's what eventually led to his DFA, otherwise, he'd be the long man in Atlanta right now.
