  1. I should have stated that better. He got a raise in the per season plus the 5-year opt out that he wanted by going for less years. I only mentioned the per as it was one negotiating angle that he was allowed to win by the Dodgers in order to come off of the 10 year contract.
  2. Kershaw wanted 10 years at $30M per. To go under 10, he got a hefty raise in the per. Incredible deal, but if there's one pitcher in all of baseball that would get this contract, he'd be the guy.
  3. None that I kept. I caught one ball from Chad Curtis, with the Detroit Tigers at the time. I was with a girl wearing a Curtis jersey (seriously!) and another guy from Detroit, and he threw the practice ball up to us, and I caught the ball. I gave it to the girl of the group who was infatuated with Curtis (later found out she attempted to get him to her hotel room when he was a Yankee and he declined). Close, but no cigar story: Being a huge Braves fan in the midst of the upper midwest was not fun for my growing up as there was no interleague for most of it, and the closest National League team was Chicago. By the time I was in college, however, Milwaukee was in the NL, so I had a closer destination to see them, especially since I was at the U. We went in Miller Park's first season to a Braves game, and we had very nice seats along the third base line. I always keep score at ballgames, and I was in the midst of catching up from a rough inning for John Smoltz when Andruw Jones came up to the plate. He hit a screaming liner that I looked up just in time to duck away from before it hit me in the head and get a fingertip on. It landed in the lap of the guy behind me.
  4. Some good points in there, but he took no home town discount whatsoever. He was the highest paid pitcher in the game in 1991 and the 5th highest paid player in the entire league. That mystique has been erroneously hung on Morris in Minnesota for quite a while now, and it's just not true.
  5. And he won it the next year with the Twins.
  6. I didn't mean he wasn't the ace of those staffs in that comment at all, so I apologize if that's how it came off. With the way today's playoffs go, there's a good chance your "ace" doesn't get to pitch game one. There used to be more time off between series and before the playoffs, but that was also back when there were only two teams from each league who made the playoffs at all.
  7. The gambling is part of the CBA, though, and it has always been against the rules for players to do such. This punishment would be outside of the CBA, and that would not hold up legally if it was challenged.
  8. I'm not so sure it's anti-doping resistance as much as a requirement for evidence, which has been questionable at best in this case, not to mention the illegal manner that much of the evidence that is present was acquired, which would have it completely thrown out of any legal proceeding. Armstrong had the rumors for years before concrete evidence came forward, and once it did, he was suspended. I'd completely support suspension if similar viable evidence came forward, but that hasn't been the case here so far. Don't get me wrong. I am not a fan of ARod and his arrogance in the situation at all, but he deserves every protection of innocence until proven guilty that any of us do.
  9. Pedro Florimon is an exceptional fielder, but comparing he and Andrelton Simmons in the field is like comparing Adrian Gonzalez to Miguel Cabrera at the plate. Gonzalez is an exceptional hitter, but he's nowhere near Cabrera's level. Robinson compared to many in his era is similar, and that's outside of the postseason.
  10. He's entitled to appeal as he really shouldn't be beyond 50 games based on what his own union negotiated. Whether he's guilty or not, that's another thing. I think Braun knew his guilt from his earlier test and took the suspension because of that. Fighting also means this hanging over his head for longer while he appeals, and Braun is someone who comes off VERY concerned about what others think about him...ARod, not so much.
  11. No, no it wasn't. There were reports of anabolics in the dugout in the minors during the 1981 strike. There are many beat writers of the time who are starting to admit seeing anabolics in the early 80s. The mid-90s brought around PEDs that were safer and didn't take away from basic baseball skills like the old anabolics did, but don't kid yourself that steroids weren't not only in baseball in the 1980s but also being used throughout the league at some level.
  12. There is a strong push to change away from the 10-person ballot as soon as next voting period. That could drastically impact guys like Piazza, Biggio, and Mussina/Schilling.
  13. Exactly. Morris is in the HOF for the one reason he actually should be in - 1991. His 1984 performance was good too, but his 1987 and 1992 postseason performances were equally horrid as his 1991 and 1984 performances were good. In fact, his postseason ERA is 3.80, basically equal to his 3.90 career ERA. So Morris was the same pitcher that he was during the regular season in the postseason. He just happened to be up in the rotation for a very memorable game 7 in 1991 and pitched well in half the postseasons that he appeared.
  14. Baseball Reference keeps track of umpire records for pitchers, but not for hitters.
  15. He was #3 for me at my pick, and he lasted until the 2nd round. I was very surprised on that.
  16. LOL. Nope, can't top that. I have had some interesting ones for just Franklin.
  17. I'm happy where I'm at with my roster. I didn't have a lot of great trade fodder to work with but as much as anything, I've scoured the waiver wire and free agents for guys I like as bounceback types or young guys I could see being good in the scoring system like Peraza. Still getting some ridiculous offers, but we'll see whether I'm done or not.
  18. Worst part is that they've been desperate for a shooter, and Wesley Matthews went undrafted that year. He'd have been the perfect shooter for them.
  19. Up the middle players are under-rated in the game in general. Catchers ruin their bodies so much just doing what they do, so you either have a guy who is hot for a short time and quickly succumbs to injuries or a guy who is mediocre, but he hangs on forever and accumulates stats that rank near the top of the position. The real trick is trying to value historical catching defense. We're still three+ years from putting anywhere near an accurate value on framing, and that's something everyone is paying attention to now, so you can imagine how far we are from even accurately evaluating current catchers, let alone catchers in history. I'd put shortstops in the same light. So much is demanded of them defensively, and their peak is so short, that they often don't have the career stats to measure up to a corner IF/OF type. A lot of the solid defensive shortstops as young players end up transitioning to 3B as they age because the range, reactions, and plain speed required at shortstop is really a young man's game. I could make arguments for a number more catchers and shortstops to be in over the Jim Rices of the world, but the offensive focused traditionalists would have a cow over that.
  20. Yeah, poor wording, which is why I changed the wording.

  22. This is the same mentality that folks have with social workers and those who receive welfare/food stamps/any government benefit. One or two bad apples get lots of publicity/remembrance, and those who are busting their backsides doing the right thing in the right way are assumed in the same group as those who are the bad apples. I had a boss once who theorized that such views of professions like teaching and social work is a predominant excuse for keeping wages in that field extremely subpar.
  23. Don't I know this one!! My fiance works multiple jobs and still has to come home and do all of her lesson planning, paper correcting, student reports, etc. on her own time.
  24. I was in the same boat with CC in another dynasty league, but I took advantage of a panicked Matt Harvey owner who was leading the league by slim margins to move CC and Johnny Cueto (along with a conditional pick for 2015 if Harvey pitches certain innings in 2014) for Harvey. Another league I put CC on the block, and I did get one offer of A-Rod for him, otherwise, no bites at all, so I decided I will just ride him until the end at this point.
  25. As they say, you can't measure everything, even in a game where everything is measured. Many of Oakland's young pitchers came out and said that Suzuki was a big reason for their ease of transition to the major leagues. I've watched him in Oakland and in Washington, and he was an elite-caliber defender in Oakland who got hurt before being traded, and he's had two seasons of injury, basically. If he's healthy, he's not going to put up .280/.330/.440, but he could give you solid offense and be back to that defensive stalwart he was before. It seemed like last season, he'd be just magnificent for a few games back but then tweak something again. Yet another example on why never to abuse a young catcher.
