  1. While that has some truth, Eddie Perez and Henry Blanco were also regarded as elite defensive guys, and one of them was the Maddux catcher for most of his Braves tenure.
  2. From a non-Braves standpoint, that'd be the thing that'd raise the biggest red flag for me. Wren simply refuses to move a solid pitcher unless he's overwhelmed with return (like getting Justin Upton), or he believes a guy's actual value is much lower than his perceived value in the industry (like Arodys Vizcaino). Sometimes that guy can re-establish value, but often those guys turn into little or nothing if the Braves are willing to move him.
  3. Except that no one I've heard that from has any paid association with the Braves. Gilmartin came off as a Minor-lite when he was drafted, but watching him last year was just simply different. He completely lost the feel for creating the break on his pitches that once gave him elite movement and secondary stuff. That may never return.
  4. Framing doesn't like Suzuki, but I've certainly never seen anything in his games that suggests he's poor at it, but I also don't trust metrics on framing much at this time based on eye test vs. stats so far, similar to when zone rating and such first came out. Suzuki has been hurt the last few years, so I wouldn't equate his expected offense to the production he's put forth the last two seasons, but I also wouldn't expect .290/.340 from him either.
  5. As a Braves fan and writer, I've seen a lot of Gilmartin, and last year it wasn't just the velocity. He lost feel and touch on all his pitches, and it sounds like this is a shoulder injury that could be one of things that never goes away fully, meaning days of 91-92 and sharp-breaking junk may simply be gone. I know he had slipped to 14 in the Braves system in our ranks, and that's a bottom tier system right now, so you're talking a prospect who's likely 350-450 overall in baseball. Not that Doumit was exactly lighting the world on fire, but Gilmartin was basically throwaway fodder for the Braves. It'd be nice for the Twins if he could recover some of what he once was, but everything I've seen, read, and heard says Gilmartin is likely never that guy again fully.
  6. No mention of the Chuck Knoblauch hot dog game?
  7. The issue is that this was before his 2013 where he was hurt and really lost a lot of touch and feel for his pitches as well as velocity (and he didn't have a lot of velo to lose to start again). His review will be a lot different this year. Long reliever if he even makes the majors is his projection at this point.
  8. Why would any team say, "Hey, would you like to give us all your crap in one deal, and we'll reward you with a top 100 prospect?" C'mon now.
  9. Top 15 is more accurate. And the Braves are a lower-tier system right now due to all their recent graduations, so think more like a prospect in the 400-500 range.
  10. Not sure. I'm just familiar with the fans who I speak with, typically located in the north, even on those message boards I mentioned. Pitch framing is still tremendously inaccurate in measure. Not claiming that Doumit is good at it by any means, but there is a tendency to recite framing numbers in relation to catchers, which is akin to receiving defensive range numbers 10 years ago.
  11. So, the crazy part of all of this is that Braves message boards love this deal and believe Wren just fleeced the Twins by dumping Gilmartin's shoulder on them for anything of value.
  12. Mayo hasn't updated his rankings since preseason. Gilmartin was #14 in John Sickels' top 20 and in the rankings the site I write for put together.
  13. Not sure who had him top 5, but it would be someone who valued "close to majors" over "upside". The comparison is apt as Gilmartin has lost a LOT from the guy he was pre-draft as has Wimmers.
  14. Oy, no. Not at all. I may love the Braves, but I don't love every move they make and every guy wearing their uniform. I'm not a Doumit fan at all, but I'm not a Gilmartin fan at all either, so it's a wash for me, I guess.
  15. Should say something when beat guys are saying good trade to move him for Doumit and cash (though the amount is still not clear).
  16. Preseason, he may have been #5, but he never was a serious consideration for the majors in his first season of pro ball or even his second season.
  17. I'm not sure you guys have a grip on how bad Gilmartin has become. Think Alex Wimmers from the left side.
  18. Depends. Dave O'Brien, the Braves beat writer, responded to someone asking about money involved, and he said there is some, but it's not clear yet.
  19. And you didn't get one. You got a better ex-Brave when you acquired Scott Diamond.
  20. Was joking about Gilmartin, but his toe jam may be more valuable than Gilmartin himself. This isn't good for either team.
  21. I'm not sure who they'd acquire from the Braves, catching-wise.
  22. Sean Gilmartin's toe jam? Anything more would be an overpay from the Braves' angle. I would not understand this acquisition at all from the Braves side.
  23. .398 He'll play the Braves 6-8 times per season, and Andrelton Simmons will cause him to go 0-25 each season against the Braves because, well, Simba.
  24. As someone who's seen a lot of Maholm the last couple of seasons, you could do much, much worse than he'll give you as a 4/5 in the rotation. He'll eat up innings typically, and while his numbers won't make you go out and by a Cy Maholm t-shirt, he'll be a steady, league-average type of pitcher. Really someone who's sort of a poor man's Mark Buehrle. The interesting thing is how little buzz he's getting this offseason. I think someone could end up with a deal on him in comparison to what they'd have to spend for the more "name recognition" types.
  25. He's been a personal favorite since he came up, so I watched his career closely. I see him akin to a Russell Martin lite. Martin was also abused terribly in the Dodgers days (448 games in 3 seasons along with 1838 plate appearances), and his production at the plate and behind it tailed off. He recovered in his Yankee days, barely cracking 475 PA in each season in New York. Last year in Pittsburgh, he turned in his best defensive season of his career by metrics and his best fWAR since his 2008 season when he was being overused in spite of batting a meddling line of .226/.327/.377 in 2013 at the plate.
