  1. Manfred should mean continued labor peace, as he was a front man in that peace since the mid-90s. The worry that many around the game have shared is that he has been known to be more hard-lined on player behavior, and we could see pressure to increase off-field punishments with Manfred in office. Otherwise, I think you basically get a younger Bud from a lot of what I read about the man.
  2. Anti-climatic that my 1,000th post was utilized talking about Vance Worley...
  3. Sadly, I don't think I'll be partaking, and I'm sad to see that portion of this community leave. I'm not attempting to be a negative Nelly, but I'm really not a Vikings fan, but I enjoy talking football, and the Vikings board is where that was happening. I hope football conversation happens on the "The Sports Bar" board without issue for those who choose to talk football more than talk Vikings specifically.
  4. He actually ended up pitching a very solid game. Had one bad inning, but then shut down the Braves for 6 after that. No way he should have gotten 6 earned out of that inning either. The Pirates should have four errors this game right now and only have been charged with two. Worley should have been out of the first inning with only 2-3 runs max.
  5. The video of the incident: http://www.milb.com/multimedia/vpp.jsp?content_id=35349193 The amazing thing: the catch was made.
  6. I haven't read anyone who understands the way sprint cars are built and run that have been on both sides of the argument. I've heard a lot of "you don't accelerate to turn" and "pumping the brakes" arguments from uneducated people on the physics of how Stewart could have avoided the incident.
  7. The logistics and physics of a sprint car are quite easy to figure. That makes the argument pretty easy. Don't even need to know Tony's mind set to know whether or not he could have avoided the accident based on the physics and conditions the car was in.
  8. By interesting, I mean it will be interesting if he takes the PR hit of going to trial with the guy's family to prove his side (a la Jesse Ventura), or if he chooses to settle out of court just to get it out of the media and spotlight, not that there would be much, if any, merit to such a case.
  9. I love the Braves/Nationals rivalry. Great, young teams that should be beating up on one another for at least the next 3-5 years. That's what makes a rivalry great. The Braves and Mets had that in the late 90s, but those Mets teams were created through the almighty dollar and couldn't sustain. I'm not so sure that will be an issue with the Nats/Braves.
  10. I think they've tried to move Schafer this season, but there's not a lot of trade market for a guy making over a million to pinch run, even for a low-level type of guy. He's also had some personality clashes with the coaching staff and front office this season, so it's entirely possible this was a "don't let the door hit ya where the Good Lord split ya" sort of response from the team.
  11. Because that's exactly the same. You're working in a world of incredibly competitive athletes. Disrespecting their ballpark is going to come off very personal, and understandably so. I know that this issue gets into a silly area for you, Levi, so I'll leave it there, but to compare this to your ice situation is intentionally being extremist and patronizing.
  12. My dad used to say, "Any problems in school can quickly be solved by a week of shoveling bunks." And he was correct!
  13. The part on Bo was very interesting. I've done my fair share of speculating on scouting grades, so this was a good read. Thanks for posting!
  14. If you really don't see how this can be inciting behavior, then we don't need to continue this conversation, regardless of how much you assume you can improve my life. Nevermind that I spend my life being a peacemaker and can discuss plenty of the biological ticks that determine how someone reacts to stimuli, mental and physical. Assuming such about someone else is quite a pretense, and insulting, to say the least. With that, I'll bow out of further discourse on this topic with you so as to not take this beyond TD's code of conduct.
  15. It's still an opinion over whether it matters to someone. Does it physically involve them? No, but that's never what was being discussed here, and to suggest otherwise is just being intentionally obtuse.
  16. You're entitled to your opinion. I just miss when baseball teams could actually enforce such things. Bob Gibson would have had the problem solved after the first time. Yes, people will call that barbaric, but I consider what Harper did to be inciting behavior as well.
  17. A lot of sprint drivers locally and nationally have talked about the last-second rev that is apparent on the video and said that is what you'd do to turn the car because of the way sprint cars are designed, to make a quick left turn, you hit the gas fast, which veers the car left based on the slanted design of the car. Dirt track racing has some very interesting background, but I know around here, there isn't hesitation to throw criminal charges on someone. A guy was 20 mph over posted pit speed because he was pissed that he weighed too heavy and was disqualified for a win because of it. Police present in the pits issued a speeding citation and a wreckless driving citation. The local race promoter will suspend you for the season if you get out of your car for confrontational purposes. Just a little bit of discipline cleans up the racing a ton, but I have seen some very good points made that there's no way Stewart could have done anything to avoid him. Doubtful on criminal charges, but the civil case could be very interesting.
  18. Completely get what you're saying, but I will tell you that there are three other outfielders, two of whom are center fielders, on the Braves' 40-man roster that are in AAA. Acquiring Bonifacio, who would take really the only value that Schafer was providing to the 25-man - speed, made Schafer more dispensable than the other three on the 40-man, all three of whom I'd place below Schafer in organizational charting. He's likely about the 27th active, and if he was an arm, they'd find a way to make it work, but there's more of him on their 40-man that makes him more removable in their particular case.
  19. I don't really like it. I love when a guy like Adam LaRoche, who has a decent history with both clubs, comes out against such moves because it's simply a dick move. I wouldn't want Jason Heyward or Freddie Freeman doing the same thing at the Nationals ballpark. You play hard on the field and make the rivalry great in that way. It was a great weekend series, and no one's talking about that part of things.
  20. In fairness to Schafer, he was no longer in the 25 best players, but he would have been in the 40. He just didn't have options, and he wasn't in those top 25, so he had to be put through waivers to send him down.
  21. Welcome to Braves fans' misery. Pinch hit for a pitcher to use Schafer to move a runner = Net loss from the pitcher hitting and bunting on his own. Not many hitters who you can say that about.
  22. So...Tony Stewart = killer or part of a terrible accident?
  23. After Shoeless Joe is reinstated, of course.
  24. Schafer didn't have options, though, so he would have had to pass through the waivers. That hurt his stock because if he did have options, he would have been highly desirable, but spending a year-plus on the MLB DL took away some options.
  25. Part of why he lasted so long in 2012 was that he had no options left, so any team that claimed him would have to keep him on the major league team, so it's a bit disingenuous to infer he lasted a long time because of talent. I don't disagree that he's just as likely to clear waivers this offseason as he is to be claimed, but I do think on a subjective view that someone will give him a shot even then, especially with a whole offseason to fix what they believe ails him. Of course, what really ails him is that he has two strikes from PED and drugs of abuse and never recovered well from a wrist injury suffered after a very positive start to his 2009 debut season (ruining the celebration of the division rival Phillies following their 2008 World Series victory with a home run to lead off the season). His wrist has never gotten better, and he can't risk the drugs that helped him get where he was. Guys like that, though, seem to get more chances than a guy who simply never produced at 100% health.
