  1. Today in Laws chat someone asked him about Appel vs Gray. Appel is ranked above him due to history of performance, command, and the fact Appel could pitch as soon as September if drafted. Keith also said these are not knocks against Gray, Keith has stated he is a huge Gray fan, but more praise to Appel. He did hint that he has work ethic/conditioning concerns with Gray which is note worth.
  2. Oh yeah? I must have missed his chat. I will have to check it out. Callis also did a chat today and he would be surprised if the Astros take Gray first and he still has Gray behind Appel /Manaea. That's the fun part of prospecting! If everyone had the same opinion where is the fun in that?
  3. For ESPN insiders keith law had a pretty good write up on Gray. As of right now, I have Gray behind Manaea/Appel with Stanek coming in 4th. After that I see there being a big drop in college pitching talent. While this draft is super deep in college pitchers these are the only guys i see with #1-2 upside. Also, with the two high school OFs and 3 big time college bats I definitely think one of the top 3 pitchers will make it to us.
  4. I think looking at this draft and the 2009/2010 drafts it clearly shows why we are struggling now. Hunt, guts, Gibson, and wimmers all haven't given us any war on the big league level for different reasons. While it is still too early to call the 2009/2010, or even the 2008, drafts a bust...when you draft college arms who you expect to make it to the bigs fast and don't, you are left with a lot of holes. Obviously Gibson and Wimmers still have time but if they didn't need TJs we wouldn't be arguing about the pitching staff as much. But, injuries happen and it is just part of the game. Hopefully Hicks, Herm, and Tonk turn this draft class around this year.
  5. Oh, I thought you were the only one making the threads. Once I get internet outside my phone I don't mind making a few threads/editing them for the forum.
  6. Not getting past the 4th inning except once. Yikes. People were comparing him to Gausman last year and had him in the same category as Appel and Manaea to start the year. Hopefully he figures it out because I really liked him before the season started
  7. I don't understand this whole take Anderson and save money later idea. Correa was ranked in the top 3-4 of most boards, some had him #1, while Anderson is in the 20s+ range. The two situations are totally different . Houston got top end talent while saving money. Outside of Anderson being from MN, widdle too, I don't understand why these guys have posts but no bryant or fraizer.
  8. Everyone, especially front office people, know the twins need top of the rotation pitchers sooner rather then later. Their jobs are on the line, not ours. Knowing this they still take Buxton. What does that tell you about how they valued Buxton and/or viewed the college arms last year? This isn't rocket science people. Do people really think Terry Ryan and the rest of the scouts don't understand we need pitching? Right now I have Appel, Manaea, Bryant, Fraizer, and then everyone else well behind. Obviously there is plenty of time but I'm not jumping on the helium college arm bandwagon. I rather have a star than an average player.
  9. Draft a good pitcher in later rounds and develop them? Obviously this has been a weakness for our system but hopefully that will change with JO. Its not every 1/2 pitcher is from top 5 picks. From what I can tell there are currently only 4 elite guys right now (Appel, Manaea, fraizer, and Bryant), which currently works out for us. There is still a long way to go but if the draft was held today and both Appel/Manaea were gone give my Bryant. Dude is going to be a beast
  10. This kid is going to be special. Very few kids have his talent. Even fewer have his work ethics.
  11. Silly? I completely understand putting Sano over Buxton, or liking other Twins specs over him, or preferring specs who have proven themselves at higher levels, but this under valuing of Buxton has to stop. This dudes tools aren't comparable to Meyers or Arcia. Most of the top spec analysts love Buxton so why don't Twins fans? People still upset they didn't take a college pitcher last year?
  12. Yeah, Matt wasn't a big fan of Appel last year either. Sickels has Manaea at #1, Appel at #4, and Stanek at #5. Before the college baseball season started the three seemed so much closer. Stanek still has plenty of time to prove he belongs right there with Appel/Manaea but he needs to start showing it on the field.
  13. I couldn't have said it better Wahl. When did playing well the first two weeks of spring training mean anything? Heck, when did playing well all of spring training ever mean anything? We are all excited to see our young guys but it's spring training! Hicks hasn't played higher than AA balls, Gibson is on a pitch count, and the Twins are most likely going to suck. IMO starting them in the minors doesn't only make sense for the future but for the present. It's spring training!
  14. This is definitely the best overall group of Twins specs I have seen since following their minors. Not only great depth but two elite studs in Sano and Buxton at the top. Law of probability tells not all of these guys will reach their ceilings and/or make it to the pro. On the same note law of probability also tells us some of them will! Hopefully Hicks/Arcia /Gibson will get things started this year.
  15. Those are pretty much the names but this already weak draft has been hit pretty hard with injuries already. Stewart is out with a football injury, Whitsons out for the year, and Austin Wilson is out for awhile. All preseason top 10 type guys. Put me in the camp of not being a fan of Ball or Crawford at all. While Crawford has two plus pitches, upper 90s fastball and slider, I have just read too many reports that say because of his delivery he might end up a RP. Ball just has too many question marks for me to like him at 4. Don't get me wrong, both these guys have plenty of time to prove me wrong but right now...gross! If none of the top 3 arms are around, currently the top 3 specs IMO of the draft, my hope is that Bryant and/or Moran prove they can be 3B. If not, the Twins might be taking another toolsy Georgia outfielder!
  16. Oh, I 100% agree that we need to take the BPA no matter what position but there are a lot of Twins fans that are still mad we took Buxton over a college arm last year. If the Twins took Clint Frazier, this years Buxton, peoples heads might explode. While there is still a long way to go there have just been so many injuries this year, on top of this being a weak draft.Outside of Appel/Manaea no one is really separating themselves from the pack. It would just be nice if the Twins get lucky two years in a row and get the top talent again!
  17. A lot of people had Stanek ranked right there with Appel and Manaea, if not higher, but so far he is lagging behind. Small sample size of course but with the Twins drafting at 4 it would be nice if he closed the gap.
  18. Never really been impressed by Windle but as a college arm who pitches for the gophers I understand why we are talking about him. If he proves he can be a safe/quick to the bigs lefty I don't see him making it to the second round. If he doesn't prove those things there is no reason to draft him IMO. While the draft is weak in college players there is an abundance of HS LHPers I would love to see the Twins take a chance on in the second round.
  19. I think you nailed it. If Appel, or Manaea for that matter, pitch like aces all year they wont be there at 4. All three teams above the Twins need pitching. The real question is, for the people out there who think the Twins HAVE to take a pitcher, what if Appel, Manaea, and Stanek go 1-2-3 in some order? As I say this while Appel/Manaea have pitched like aces Stanek hasn't really impressed so far.
  20. The new CBA doesn't allow major league contracts to draftees anymore. One option would be a handshake agreement to get Appel to the bigs ASAP to start his arbitration clock.
  21. Some connecting the dots here but in Callis' 2/18/2013 ask BA post(link below) he indicates in a round about way that CURRENTLY Buxton would be the top spec in both 2013/14 if eligible. The first question he is asked to place the 2013, adds the top 2 2014 draftees into the mix, into his top 100 if they were eligible. Appel who is currently there top spec for 2013 would rank around 20 while Rodon, considered by most to be the top talent in 2014, would be in the teens. On both BAs overall list and Callis' personal Buxton was rated in the top 10. Clearly still lots of time before the 2013, much less the 2014 draft, but it tells you how highly he regards Buxton. Food for thought for people who keep saying the only reason Buxton went so high because of a weak draft. http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/ask-ba/2013/2614738.html
  22. While I agree that we shouldn't crown this group the best twins starting staff ever, this is a great group of arms. I would argue that it is more talented than the 2006-2008 group you listed. Heck, even if this group turns out like the 2006-2008 group would it be so bad? Ace starter who gets derailed by injuries, a solid #2, two back end starters, and a great bull pen arm ain't bad. Actually..... That sounds like a very reasonable outcome.
  23. Bubba starling went #5 in one of the deepest drafts in the past 20 years. Callis/mayo, among other spec experts, have called Buxton a better spec than Bubba. While Buxton went #2 last year he was considered by most to be the best prospect in the draft. Looking at the draft talent this year there is a good chance, if he was in it, he would be the #1 spec again. That's pretty impressive in my book.
  24. I played till 9th grade and quit a week after making my high school team. I was never that good anyways. While I don't think you have to play baseball to appreciate the game it does bug me when people talk about how "easy" the game is compared to "X" sport they like when they have never played. Hitting a baseball is damn hard.
