  1. In BA's weekly article Three Strikes they profiled Brandon Shipley. One NL scout had this to say about him: "He’s got arguably one of the best righthanded changeups in the country—and that’s including the major leagues,” a National League area scout said. “It’s a devastating pitch, a separator. And I think his breaking ball could be a plus pitch in the future. It’s a true curveball, late and hard, and I’ve seen it up to 79-80 (mph), but there are also times you see it floating in at 74-75.” To read the who article or just the section about Shipley follow the link below: Three Strikes: Week 12 - BaseballAmerica.com
  2. Twins 9th round pick last year, only twins draftee that didn't sign in the first 10 rounds, L.J Mazzilli has had a pretty solid year. He isn't going to go in the first few rounds but he should go much higher than the 9th round.
  3. UNC was off this weekend so no stats for Moran. Bryant: 9 AB, 1 Hit, 3 R, 2 RBI, 1 HR, and a handful of walks. Bryant is leading all of college baseball in walks, HR (23), and OPS. Crawford gave us this little snip it: "a source told me that there's zero chance that he slips out of the top 5, and that Colorado would be "crazy" to not select him with pick No. 3."
  4. I'm not going to post weekly stats for these guys like in other threads but BA mentioned Dace Kime for the second week in a row so I figured I would pass this on. "Not to be outdone, righthanderDace Kime—who’s scouting report can be seen in last week’s Draft Tracker—had a great start on Sunday. In only his eighth career start, the eighth-round pick by the Pirates out of high school gave up one run on three hits over seven innings with two walks and 10 strikeouts. On the season, he is now 4-1, 3.30 with 12 walks and 58 strikeouts over 46 innings." Guy who was mostly used a RP but has done well in a few starts....does this sound familiar after last year?
  5. Top pitching prospects went into the weekend knowing they only have 4 starts till the draft. Here is how they did. Blair:8.1 innings, 3 H, 1ER, 8/4 k/bb M.Gonzales: 8 innings, 9 H, 4 ER, 12/4 k/bb Harsh:6 innings, 7 H, 5 ER, 3/4 k/bb Wahl: 8 innings, 4 H, 1 ER, 5/2 k/bb Ziomek: 8 innings, 8 H, 1 ER, 4/0 k/bb Williams: 6 innings, 9 H, 5 ER, 7/3 k/bb Mitchell: 5 innings, 2 H, 0 ER, 3/5 k/bb A.Gonzalez: 8 innings, 4 H, 0 ER, 7/2 k/bb Crawford had a quote from an AL Central scout this weekend: "The slider has been really good this year," an AL Central scout said. "He's got the type of build you love, and he holds his velocity well. [Oral Roberts] doesn't face the best of competition, but a low 90s fastball and a plus slider will play anywhere. I see a No. 3 starter who should give you plenty of innings at the big-league level."
  6. Manaea coming back from injury didn't look so hot. 4 innings, 5/4 K/BB ratio, and gave up one ER. His fastball was sitting in the mid 80s and his slider was still inconsistent. Crawford had an interesting quote from a NL Exec: "If this was a good class, I'm not sure [Manaea] goes in the first round," an NL executive told me. "But because he was so good [last] summer and because the depth is not there, he'll likely be a top-10 guy. I don't see it, but I guess some team will be hoping he can rediscover his Cape stuff. It won't be us." Manaea has only 3 more starts before the draft.
  7. When I look at best group of prospects ever I'm only looking at while they were prospects and not their big league careers. If you add in the MvPs, all star games, hall of fame votes, and so on an so on the current group has no shot...you know...seeing they are still in the minors.
  8. If they pan out or not doesn't alter the quality of prospects they are currently. This system isn't only elite but deep.
  9. I have only been following the prospect scene for about 8 years but I can say this is easily the best group of specs I can remember. I say this not only because we might end the year with two prospects in the top 5 but because of the depth. At the end of the year Arcia, Gibson, and Hicks will not be considered prospects any more and we will still have 5+ prospects in the top 100. Don't forget the draft is only a month away and no matter who the Twins take at 4 they will be one hell of a talent.
  10. ESPN has a story on Sano due to his awesomeness. Here is the link: Top Twins prospect Miguel Sano starring in documentary - ESPN
  11. As noted above the worry isn't if they will sign but when they sign. If Boras holds out till the very end the prospects will lose valuable development time, especially if they are high school players. Also, it will make it harder to sign any other over slot guys that they grab later in the draft. Hopefully the scouts/front office do their job and figure out asking demands so if they have to go over they can do it quick. P.S. I added this thread to the one stop shop thread so it is easier to find in the future.
  12. There were 31 first round picks last year and out of those 15 signed under slot, 10 signed for slot, 5 signed for over slot, and 1 didn't sign. 3 of the over slots were high schoolers who people knew would be tough signings (Almora, Giolito, Seager). One was Gausman who after being drafted by the O's "changed his mind about staying in college" till the O's played him over slot (agent wasnt Boras). Then there was Marrero who....no idea why he got over slot actually. I'm less concerned about having to pay a player over slot than losing valuable development time because of long negotiations. Buxton might make it to high A this year only because he was able to get in at bats after the draft.
  13. Consider me tuned. Hopefully it is good news.
  14. Questions dealing with Twins prospects from Jim Shonerd at BA for the forth prospect hot sheet. Miguel Sano (Fort Myers, FL): When am I going to AA? Jim Shonerd: Searching for some more worthy adversaries, Miguel? How close was JO Berrios to making the cut after his impressive start this week? Jim Shonerd: Another really good outing for Berrios: 6.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 8 K. Like I said with Bradley, it was just a crowded field of pitchers this week. In other weeks, that line's good enough to make it. Sano has made the list three times, Buxton has made the list three times, but no Eddy Rosario? He has a stat line of .343 with 7 doubles/2 triples/3HR/19RBI, OBP .381, SLG .528 with no errors at 2b! Jim Shonerd: Nice start to the year, just hasn't put it together for that one huge week to make the Hot Sheet. He slugged .583 this week (always an impressive mark in the FSL) but was just 7-for-24 (.292). That won't do it. Given his likely innings limit and the trash the Twins are throwing out there in the MLB, what's your guess for a Kyle Gibson ETA? Jim Shonerd: Midseason, or sooner if he strings together a few more dominant starts for Rochester
  15. If you draft Bryant at 4 you are doing it for his bat and his bat definitely will play at 1st.
  16. Churchill did a write up on McGuire today and he ended with this: "At present, McGuire is an above-average runner, but speed is not likely to be a part of his game in pro ball. He's committed to San Diego, but he's a first-round talent and almost certain to sign. He's looked the part of a late first-round pick for me, but it only takes one club to like him a lot more than that and he could be gone in the top half of the round, with Minnesota at No. 4 the highest I've heard." This is the second time has link McGuire to the Twins in the past week and I just can't see the Twins taking him that high. McGuire isnt a bad prospect but i really cant see the Twins grabbing a HS catcher at 4 with all the arms and toolsy outfielders around. As Jeremy said just chalk this up to Churchill not being good at his job.
  17. If Appel and Gray are gone, about a 99% chance that they are, the popular answer is going to be Manaea. I wouldn't have a problem with this pick but I'm hoping the Twins draft Bryant or Stewart who are 3/4 on my board. College pitchers that are taken in the top 5 normally don't have as many question marks as Manaea which scares me off. If Manaea can regain his cape cod stuff in his next 4 starts before the draft I could easily change my choice. For the second round I see Windle, another college arm, being the popular choice. While there is value getting a guy like Windle at 43 I'm just not a fan. I like upside and Windle has none of that. Ryan Boldt would be a steal in the second round and unless his injury is worse than reported I doubt he makes it there. Kyle Serrano is my favorite underrated prospect in the draft. Super young (won't be 18 till June), throws in 92-95 range, dad coaches the Tenn baseball team, and best of all already has a 70 grade curve ball. Only draw back is his size, 6 foot, but that didn't stop the Twins from taking JO last year.
  18. Today BA released their forth installment of their prospect hot sheet and it was the first time Sano didn't make the list. Actually no Twins made the top 13 but three made the "in the team photo" section. Two of the names, Buxton and Gibson, are big well known names but it was nice to see Jorge Polanco get some love. Here is what they had to say about Polanco: "A smooth defender with a light bat when he signed in 2009, Polanco’s hitting continues to move in the right direction. The 19-year-old is hitting .337/.369/.474 in 24 games in the low Class A Midwest League." This was Buxtons third time to make the list and Gibsons first. BA is hosting a chat at 3 and I will get all the Twins questions up after the chat. 19. Baseball America posted an article today about several relief pitchers including Sherfy and Kind who I mention above. The article also talks about Florida's Daniel Gibson and Cal Poly's Reed Reilly. If you believe the Twins will draft college relief pitchers like last year you should check these guys out. Link below: Draft Tracker: What A Relief - BaseballAmerica.com Here is what they say about Kime. "He’s the best college pitcher in the state,” an American League scout said. “He’s 93-95 with a wipeout cutter and a curveball—that very good Defiance curve. There’s life on that fastball too. He has the stuff to be a starting pitcher but just hasn’t. That cutter would break bats if he were pitching against wood. If the right guy goes in and sees him on the right day, he could go in the third round.” Drafting a relief pitcher and converting him to a starting pitcher? If the Twins keep the same plan as last year this might be their guy.
  20. I actually posted this story yesterday and updated it with the All-prospect team for April BA released today. As I say this, this was such a good story it is worth posting twice! Here is a link to the other thread: http://twinsdaily.com/twins-minor-league-talk/6356-baseball-america-led-miguel-sano-fort-myers-stands-april-s-top-team.html
  21. While I had heard concerns about his type 1 diabetes I hadn't heard overall health concerns. I'm still a big fan but it just gives us one more question mark for a guy the Twins might draft.
  22. Baseball America had this to say about his defense in a recent article: As good as Sano has been offensively, he’s also making strides defensively. Fort Myers manager Doug Mientkiewicz and Twins infield coordinator Paul Molitor have worked to get Sano to set up a few steps farther back at third base. By playing deeper, Sano is getting eaten up by in-between hops less often, while his double-plus arm gives him a little extra time to get to a ball and still make a timely throw.
  23. Law mentioned today that he has heard the Astros are definitely trying that strategy again this year....but with Gray....which would leave us in the same boat as before with the two big arms going 1-2.
  24. I was surprised he didn't mention HS LHP as one of the deepest parts of the draft. There are a ton of interesting arms in that group, Also, I hadn't heard anything about the Astros trying to cut a deal with Gray. Its not surprising seeing they did the same strategy last year, just hadn't heard it.
  25. Some general questions and answers from Keith Laws chat: What this this coming draft deepest in? Klaw (1:09 PM) College starters, mostly RHP, and prep catchers. Weakest in the middle infield. Is there any reason Houston wouldn't take Appel with the number 1 over all pick? Klaw (1:34 PM) To take a player who'd accept less money and spend it later in the draft. Last year it made sense to me. This year it makes less sense - I would take Appel. Law regarding the draft:Right now, I'd project the top five to go Gray, Appel, Bryant, Manaea, Moran. Most people I talk to expect the Astros to try to cut a deal with Gray to use the extra money on someone who falls at 40, like Stewart.
