  1. Not in the first round. From his chat today on Boldt: Ryan Boldt college bound or does team with large pool like astros try and get him in 2nd or 3rd? [h=6]Klaw (12:42 PM) [/h] If the medicals came back OK, I'd love to take him at 40 if I were Houston and pay him over slot.
  2. Keith Law released his first mock draft: Houston Astros do not take Mark Appel in first mock draft of 2013 - MLB Draft - ESPN It is behind the money wall but here is what he says about the Twins pick, Stewart in this mock; "They've been very heavy on Stewart over his last few outings, and he's an ideal fit for a system that needs high-upside pitchers, with Stewart offering the athleticism the Twins have always favored in position players. There is a persistent rumor that the Twins will cut a deal with prep catcher Reese McGuire for less than MLB's recommended bonus, which would allow them to apply those savings later in the draft. But Stewart is clearly the better choice and appears to be higher on their internal board, below only the three players who I project to go in the top three."
  3. John Sickels put out his Mock draft today and I believe Law is putting one out today too. If Law does I will add it when it comes out but for now here is Sickels mock: http://www.minorleagueball.com/2013/5/16/4335316/2013-mlb-mock-draft-version-two-john-sickels-may-16
  4. From Jim Callis' chat today: Miguel Sano (Fort Myers, FL): Do I really have a chance to play 3B at the major league level, or am I destined for 1B or the OF? Jim Callis: Destined to move, but with your power it won't matter. If the season ended today .. Who is your MILB player of the year ? Jim Callis: Miguel Sano.
  5. From Jim Callis' chat today: Would you trade Carlos Correa, Rio Ruiz, and Lance McCullers for Byron Buxton (which is essentially what Houston did last year)? How about for Mark Appel? Jim Callis: Realistically, Correa and Buxton are close enough in value that I'd take the package that also gives me McCullers and Ruiz. But my gut tells me I'd want Buxton. Would take Correa and Co. over Appel. If BA's top 100 came out today, could Byron Buxton and Archie Bradley crack your top 5? Jim Callis: In a word, yes.
  6. From Jim callis' chat today: A lot of talk around here that Bryant will be the pick over one of the big arms. The idea of Correa, Bryant, Singleton, and Springer is exciting, but would that be a mistake? Jim Callis: I wouldn't call it a mistake. But as hard as it is to find frontline starting pitching, I wouldn't pass on Appel and Gray. Can you describe what kind of player Moran is if he only reaches a decent floor and what kind of player he could be if he reaches a reasonable ceiling? Would you project him similarly to a less defensive Rendon? Jim Callis: Decent floor would be a .270/10 HR first baseman, reasonable ceiling would be a .300/20 HR third baseman. Less defensive Rendon isn't a bad call, but also less power too.
  7. From Jim Callis' chat today: How tough of a sign would Kohl Stewart be for the Twins? Jim Callis: He'll go high enough to sign. He may want to play QB at Texas A&M, but he won't displace Johnny Manziel. Is Stewart worthy of a top 5 pick or is he just the best HS arm in a weak draft? Jim Callis: Both. Is there a chance Houston surprises everyone and goes with RHP,Kohl Stewart #1 overall for like $5mill or C,Reese McGuire for $4mill. To save money for other draft picks. Jim Callis: Don't believe either Stewart or McGuire is in Houston's mix for the No. 1 choice.
  8. From Jim Callis' chat today: What kind of power grade would you give Clint Frazier? Thanks Jim Callis: Future 70. Any chance the Red Sox take Austin Meadows? He seems to be one of the most polarizing prospects in the top 10. Jim Callis: Meadows may have the best all-around package of tools among high schoolers in this draft, though he hasn't quite had the monster senior season scouts expected. Wouldn't necessarily call him polarizing, but he could slip past the top 10 picks as clubs look for more advanced prospects (especially pitchers) at the top. I don't see the Red Sox taking him--think they'll have better options, including crosstown rival Clint Frazier.
  9. From Jim callis' chat today: Any chance one of Appel/Gray/Bryant fall to the Twins at #4? And is it automatic they take one of the 3 if they are available? If they are all gone, who is the #4 prospect available? Jim Callis: There's a chance, especially because I could see the Rockies going for a pitcher at No. 3. And because the Twins want pitching, I don't think it's a lock that they'd take Bryant at No. 4. I don't see any way Appel or Gray get to Minnesota. If all three of those are gone, Clint Frazier is our highest-rated prospect and Kohl Stewart is our highest-rated pitcher. If the draft were today: Manaea, Shipley or Stanek? Jim Callis: I would take Shipley. Most athletic of that group, deepest repertoire of that group, most consistent season of that group. If you could guarantee that Manaea would turn back into the guys we saw in the Cape Cod League last summer, I'd take Manaea.
  10. Article from Mayo on Bryant: University of San Diego third baseman Kris Bryant likely top 10 pick in Draft | MLB.com: News A nice down to earth quote from Bryant: " I would be lying if I said I didn't think a lot about the future," Bryant said Saturday, after the Toreros knocked off Portland, 10-2. "For me, it's just about sticking with that routine and not letting the outside factors get to me. When you start letting that get to you, you aren't having fun, and that's what this game is all about."
  11. Article from Mayo comparing Meadows vs Frazier. In the article it also talks about their friendly rivalry. Frazier: "During the summer I was out on a mission to prove to myself and everybody else that I was as good as, if not better than, Austin," said Frazier, who played with Meadows at various summer showcases, which he said helped him prepare for the extra attention they've received this spring. "I used him as motivation over the summer. I wasn't going to take a play off, because I knew he wasn't going to take a play off. "I think having me there helped push him, too. [Coaches and instructors] were always challenging us to beat each other. I think we really pushed each other this year." Meadows: "It's been a really good relationship; it's a friendly competition. We played together the whole summer, through all the events, had fun with each other, helped each other out through the bad days and the good days, learning each other's strengths and weaknesses. We've played with each other since we were nine or 10 years old, so we know each other well on the baseball side of things. It's good to have him to support me, as well as me to support him." The article also breaks down mayo's current and future grades for the two which are very different from Laws. 12. With the depth at college pitching and HS LHPing loading up on arms shouldn't be hard, even if they don't take an arm at #4. At this point I'm not sure if the Twins are linked to any international MI prospects but they sure as heck won't find any in the rule 4 draft. Hopefully a few guys we have like Levi, Eddy, and Mr.Polanco keep developing to fill the gap.
  13. BA released three articles today involving the two Georgia OFers. Two of them are insider articles and the third is free. The insider required article on Meadows: Austin Meadows Is Ready And Waiting - BaseballAmerica.com The insider required article on Frazier: Clint Frazier Matures Quickly - BaseballAmerica.com Free article on red heads and the draft: Draft Features Rarest Of Prospects: Redheads - BaseballAmerica.com Some interesting quotes about red heads. “Anytime you’re going to make a significant personnel decision on behalf of the organization and you’re delving into waters that are not that populated, you have to wonder why,” Luhnow said. “The answer could be as simple as the percentage of redheaded people in the population. There just aren’t that many out there. “If that’s the answer, OK. So be it. But there could be something more to it, and if there is, it’s certainly worth exploring. Is it because the parts of world where redheaded people typically come from don’t play baseball as much and it’s not part of the culture? I don’t know the answer to that. Is it because they’re fair-skinned and not as durable under the sun? I’ve heard all kinds of crazy theories. I haven’t done anything to verify any of them, to be honest with you. But it certainly is an interesting topic.” “Has there ever been a redheaded quarterback in the NFL who’s really done well?” the coach said. “It sounds idiotic, but is there any way that could be a factor? We’ve wondered.”
  14. Keith law put out an article today called Epic Shortstop Era comes in Focus. While the article is most about the current young shortstops in the bigs and in the minors there was this excerpt about the upcoming draft: "This year's draft class offers an unfavorable omen that this run of good young shortstops might not last much longer. I have just one true shortstop in my top 50 draft prospects, Lakewood (Calif.) High School's J.P. Crawford, and he's a long-term project rather than a fast mover through the minors; I don't have a college shortstop who projects to stay at the position anywhere on my top 100." Our greatest need is pitching which is a strength of this draft and MI help which might be the drafts weakest point. In a but shell, don't hold your breath for a SS in this upcoming draft.
  15. Baseball America released this article; Ten International Prospects to Watch for July 2nd. Ten International Prospects To Watch For July 2 - BaseballAmerica.com One thing I noticed was the article said the following, "The Red Sox, Royals, Blue Jays and Twins all have top 10 pool allotments and should all be in the mix to sign seven-figure players this year." While that isn't a surprise but the fact the Twins are not linked to any of the prospects in the article is. The article is riddled with X team is the favorite or Y team has been linked to player Z with no mention of the Twins. This doesn't mean they won't sign one of them but it is a little odd even with the Twins being historically tight lipped.
  16. Haha, slide shows are annoying! But in this case, with several different boards, I can live with it.
  17. The Bleacher Reports boards are pretty solid but there are several things I question. The biggest is having Manaea as the best velocity for LHPs while they have several guys who throw harder on their board. That's even including Manaea's Cape Cod velocity.
  18. Bleacher reports board is up. it is actually several different boards in one...Here is a link: MLB Draft Big Board 2013: Mike Rosenbaum's Complete Pre-Draft Rankings | Bleacher Report
  19. Everyone above has done a pretty good job answering this question. In regards to Stewart there is a good chance he will gain at least a tick or two to his velocity. Stewart already has a 65 grade fastball with a good down hill plane but there is definitely room for more. He has ideal size at 6'3" with some room to add muscle at 190 lbs. His delivery isn't ideal, like most HS pitchers, but it isn't bad. Working with a professional pitching coach should work wonders smoothing out his delivery. Quitting football and focusing his athletic ability solely on baseball will also help his development.
  20. Oh, you are completely right. Clearly 5 as a sample size isn't a statistically accurate number but there are a few other reasons to think the Twins will take a college guy in the third round. They take college guys at a 71% clip out of a 33 sample size. While the Twins have always preferred college arms to HS arms, last year they started using a strategy of drafting and converting college relief pitchers which increases the amount of college players taken. Several people around here in the know think the Twins are going to pile up on arms again like last year. With this being a deep draft in college arms it gives me little doubt that most likely the third round pick will be a kid. As I say this, the Twins take BPA and if that's a HS kid in the third round they are taking him!
  21. During Hicks minor league career he was not only a slow mover but a slow starter, most switch hitters are, so I'm confused by the high expectations. I find it funny how excited people got over a few at bats in spring training but now are down on him because of a few at bats in the bigs. I think this is a case of people over valuing spring training numbers and not knowing enough about Hicks as a prospect. Hicks is going to be fine. Not only has he shown improvements in the outfield but as noted above since starting 3-53 he has hit pretty well.
  22. Haha, a Stewart/Boldt draft would be amazing. Hopefully you are right!
  23. Meadows has had concerns about lack of effort all year long. Not sure if it is a long term character issue or just him being young. I personally prefer Stewart to Frazier, due to ceiling and not position unlike most, but nothing the Twins have done in the past makes me think they will draft a HS arm at 4. Johnson has only taken 2 HS pitchers, both supplemental round, out of his 33 top 5 round picks. Closer and closer it gets to the draft the more I feel the Twins will go Frazier and then stack up on arms in later rounds like last year.
  24. Christopher Crawford posted his updated draft board today. I updated the link above. He moved several guys around. For those of you too lazy to scroll up here is the link: The Board 2013: Volume VI |
  25. Some other interesting thoughts about the numbers. The Twins only draft 29% of HS players in the first 5 rounds, 4th lowest in all of baseball, while taking college pitchers at almost a 10% higher amount than the next team. Also, if you are wondering who they will take in the 3rd round I can tell you one thing, its most likely going to be a college player seeing they have done that the last 5 years.
