  1. Mormeau is fine as a Twin. Find other trade bait.
  2. Probably a case can be made that every pro athlete, in any sport, is overpaid if balanced against long-term contributions to society. But, it is supply and demand. He happens to be uniquely talented at an important and demanding position. So he commands that income because he was producing big time at contract time ... and the Twins were winning. How many complainers would care to squat down 3-4 hours a day, 120 days per year? Or, take foul tips off the mask, the groin, foot, etc, or the collisions at home plate on a regular basis? Those abuses take a major toll on a body. I wager that Joe will have plenty of aches and pains in his golden years. I do not think he is a malingerer like I felt about Gaborik or Demitra.
  3. Very interesting observation.
  4. Streaking?
  5. I hope DPJ can count really high because I have enjoyed Morneau's contributions and hope he continues.
  6. It is, afterall, a slice of life. Sometimes things simply do not work out. This year was a year to adjust expectations ... having done that some time ago I am still watching (and even enjoying) most games.
  7. I hope "the Big Canadian" stays too. Find some other way to add pitchers. Morneau is good for the community and good for the team. Guys like that should be entitled to finish their career with the original team/city if they choose.
  8. But, Ryan recently remarked that he expects Morneau to return to his normal numbers next year and indicated the Big Canadian would be part of team foundation next year.
  9. Remember the difference between facts and opinions. Players, agents, doctors, or therapists remarks are all basically opinions ... especially discussing success of surgical procedures and recovery times. It is way too easy to try and convert all of this secondhand information into fact in our minds and the basis for our argument. But, we really don't know much more than we have had lots of injuries and not all healed. Suspicious people form one conclusion, accepting people another.
  10. Sometimes poor results are nothing more than bad luck. Most people I know do not own a perfect crystal ball so they have a real tough time knowing exactly what will happen in the future. Apparently though, this site is full of good folks with perfect crystal balls that permit them to judge the future exactly right every time. Baseball is a game to enjoy, don't over complicate it.
  11. People jump to conclusions over a whole lot of things we have no way of knowing. Without all of that missing information any conlusion we make is inaccurate. I have had three rotator cuff surgeries, two in the last 18 months. The oldest of the last two has not healed to allow a full range of motion despite best efforts of surgeon and therapist. They will not heal evenly because they are all different. No one can predict or guarantee any result. It is not an exact science, the result will vary. We do not have enough information to make educated guesses about their competence. Updated Today at 09:31 PM by OldManWinter Comment repeated from the blog.

  13. George Carling got it right in his "Baseball vs Football" routine. In baseball "everyone is up, the object of the game is to go home ... football is a down game, what down is it? You score if you get a touchdown." Et al.
  14. Positive vibes with Ryan steering now.
  15. Question the competence of the scouting staff and decision makers for leaving Slama in Rochester ... but it makes no sense to me that any MLB team would leave a guy in the minors who could actually help our weak pitching staff. So I can't accept the conspiracy theory. Besides, peoples jobs depend upon smart and correct decisions that turn into W's. Would anyone posting here be so foolish as to refuse to stock a roster with the best available players if it was their decision? I do not think so.
  16. It seems to me in the highly competitive world of MLB it is improbable that Slama, or any other player for that matter, is held down for reasons except the perception that a player cannot compete. Teams cannot afford the luxury of making roster decisions to protect the egos of their management. I am not big on conspiratorial theories.
  17. Diamond fined and suspended sucks if Oswalt goes free.
  18. JB of Iowa ... good points. Further, no two injuries/fixes are alike. Which part is injured? How significant is the injury? Does it require surgery? How long ago did it occur? Has there been any additional abuse such as being bumped in the rehab stage? I have had three large rotator cuff tears. Results have been way different in each repair. Probably everyone who has had orthopaedic surgery would have a story to add. The fans heap the pressure by their continual disapproval. If a player is not in the lineup fans complain about being injury prone. If they play in spite of it their performance suffers. Managers/coaches lose jobs if teams lose so they want the strongest lineup. Sort of a no win situation all the way around I would say.
  19. Maybe the injury thing is like flipping coins. Though the odds are 50-50 with each flip there can be a prolonged string for either heads or tails. My point is the Twins injury issue is not necessarily any lack of competence ... it may just be a string of bad luck. That the Twins will evaluate the staff and procedures in hindsight is important but it may not be a fault situation.
  20. Good thoughts! I do not get enjoyment from others' failures. Better to be sympathetic.
  21. Interesting perspective.
