  1. Just out of curiosity, if Mauer had won the batting title, would that have made a difference in your pick for MVP?
  2. When I made the thread title, I was "quoting" the Star Tribune headline, which used the word fired. In retrospect you are correct, but I don't know how to edit a thread title. The end result is the same, though. If you read the Strib article, it sure doesn't sound like this was a voluntary retirement.
  3. The Star Tribune is reporting that bullpen coach Rich Stelmaszek has been let go. I knew there would be shake-ups, but I'm a little surprised at this. The bullpen wasn't really the problem this year. My guess is this signals a fairly substantial overhaul on the coaching staff.
  4. Ignoring the shift of topic from Baker to site participation standards (and ignoring hyperlinks as I always do), I think you absolutely bring Baker back, with a one-year deal low on base salary but with substantial incentives, and with a sizable team option for 2014. My guess is that's all Baker could expect anyway given his recent injury and, to be blunt, Baker at 80% is still better than most of the people who started for the Twins this year.
  5. I would agree that his days in CF should probably be numbered and Revere should take over that position, but Span still has the ability to contribute nicely in LF or RF. I would also stop short of saying Span is afraid. It wouldn't surprise me if his concussion injury was still on his mind somewhat and that was affecting his wall play slightly, but as far as diving I would point out that it only makes the highlight reel when it works. When it doesn't and the ball gets behind you it will turn a single into a double or triple. I would prefer an outfielder who concentrated on keeping the ball in front of them, making the catch when possible but not gambling an extra base hit.
  6. I agree - if he can improve both offensively and defensively, he'll be a better player.
  7. Do you think anybody in the MLB office dreamed that the one-game wild card game might be Texas & the Yanks?
  8. I guessing you hope/expect it will look much different.
  9. Nice analysis. I've thought all season that Span wasn't getting the credit he deserved defensively (and Carroll too, for that matter). I remember about the time of the all-star game roster selection Gardy was quoted as saying (and I paraphrase) that Span was playing as well as anyone on the team. It was widely scoffed at but I had no difficulty believing it.
  10. I like the analysis, but this series is still only a possible one - Cincinnati could still win the top seed.
  11. I'm still hoping for a Baltimore-Washington series - it would be nice for something good to come out of the nation's capital this year.
  12. It depends what our ambition is. If the goal is to return to the playoffs, then we are closer to half-full - a few changes could turn this into a contending team (especially in the AL central). If the goal is a Yankees-style domination of baseball, then it is definitely more half-empty. I would personally opt more for half-full - seeking to improve incrementally. The more radical the changes you seek, the greater the chance for failure as well. I'd hate to blow everything up, only to find that instead of having a World Series champion in 2017 we have instead three years of wasted baseball followed by one that is good but not great (which is all too likely). I guess I'm content with a competitive team and would appreciate but do not require a dominant one.
  13. Hey, did somebody put Capps in there when I wasn't looking? A closer giving up a home run to tie the game with one out to go?
  14. Wow, this reminds me of my one year in the little league minors - I always played the last three innings of the game (in right field) because everybody was guaranteed a chance to play:).
  15. I hope this wasn't intentionally written to sound mean-spirited. We can all agree this signing was a mistake, but give credit to Nishioka for not sticking around and eating up 3M in salary next year, as was his right and as many would do. The least we can do is let him leave with dignity; to fail to do so says more about us than about Nishioka.
  16. Can we replace the mascot? TC just isn't cutting it anymore. I'm thankful to him for all he's given the franchise in the past, but two consecutive 90-loss seasons demand changes.
  17. It depends on to what the original question (has he shown me enough?) refers. If the question is "Has he shown me enough to be pencilled into the rotation for next year," the answer is no. I don't put much stock in a handful of games late on which little if anything is riding. If the question is "Has he shown me enough to keep him in the organization and see if he can earn a spot in ST," then the answer is yes. That said I still think we need to sign two more proven starters (#3 level or above) before a spot for Hendriks should even be considered.
  18. Was at the game. Highlight was when the Yankees 3B forgot how many outs there were and started trotting toward the dugout with the ball after a force play at 3rd. He looked around, saw that no one was following, and realized his mistake. They showed a close-up replay on his face - everybody in the stadium could read his lips. Hardest I've laughed at a Twins game all season. A lot of crying, but not many laughs.
  19. I have long given up trying to prognosticate, but my preferences would be a Baltimore-Washington series - The fans of both teams have been some of the most long-suffering in the country, and it would be nice to see something good come out of the nation's capital this year.
  20. Oh, I LOVE to beat the Yankees!!
  21. Instead of turning this into a debate about which statistics matter more, maybe we should step back and look at the title of the award - Most Valuable Player. Now, that can be understood in a variety of ways, but for me it means the person who has contributed the most to a team's success and who would be missed the most if not there. In that respect, I go with Trout. Detroit has other big names (Fielder,Verlander,Jackson) contributing and most would agree they have underperformed all year. On the other hand, if it wasn't for Trout LA wouldn't even be in the race for the wild card. He seems to have added more by his presence.
  22. [quote name=jokin;55457 Since most of the posters here have no collective memory of Kirby Puckett' date=' let alone Rod Carew, here are pictures of Tiger Stadium, believe or not, there was a ballpark before Comerica. http://www.tigerstadiumdetroit.com/navin.html[/quote] I guess this dates me. I remember Rod Carew (saw him play many times) and went to a game at Tiger Stadium in the 80s. By then of course it did not look at all like the pictures here - the dirt path from the plate to the mound had been filled in with grass. I remember thinking how old and dilapidated the stadium looked. Haven't been to the new park yet.
  23. Isn't that how most/many ballparks were laid out early in the game's history? Kind of a retro look?
  24. Don't worry. It sounds like Capps will be back soon.
  25. And Appel didn't want to be a part of this? Shocking.
