  1. Yeah, I know. I guess it's hard to stay positive when this happens repeatedly. He did well through 5. The 6th inning stuff is getting very old.
  2. There we go! Another "quality start" for Pelfrey (I'm assuming he doesn't come out for the 7th).
  3. I'm following on GameTracker. What decision is being discussed?
  4. So now we know what the Twins need to do to win - get a lead through 5, and then arrange for cloud seeding so rains will end the game before the 6th inning starts. Other than that, it looks pretty ugly the rest of the year.
  5. There's the Pelfrey we all know and love!
  6. Moore must be thinking "this is as bad as if I played for the Twins."
  7. Reminds me of the story of the new priest who followed his mentors advice to take some wine to brace himself up for the service. He asked his mentor for advice after the service, and his mentor said "Not bad, but a few minor points. There are 10 commandments, not 12; there were 12 apostles, not 10. And David slew Goliath, he didn't kick the **** out of him."
  8. Meanwhile Pelfrey hasn't completely sucked...yet.
  9. Some churches do, but even there it's frowned upon for the minister to drink it all themselves and not share. In any case, we use grape juice.
  10. It is a little harder in a church.
  11. Of course, it's also possible that that feeling in my gut is the undercooked egg I had for breakfast.
  12. Matt Moore hasn't given up a run, earned or otherwise, in July (2 starts) and he's had 4 consecutive quality starts in a row. I think he's due for a clunker. I predict Twins win today, with good run production. Just a gut hunch.
  13. I've always thought this was an important lesson to keep in mind, not just for baseball but for all spectator sports. Yes, for professional players this is their livelihood - this is how they put food on the table, and that is always going to be a concern. But, to quote Tom Selleck in Mr Baseball, "Baseball is a game, and games are supposed to be fun." If you don't enjoy what you are doing, you will have a hard time doing it well. That's true in any profession/career/job. Hope they can find the answer.
  14. I'm not so sure it's given up, but just skeptical. He had great Triple-A results last year, and it didn't translate into MLB success. And his Triple-A numbers this year are not as good as last year. Right now he seems to be right about where Worley and Hernandez are statistically, and all are behind Albers. I guess I'd like to seem him float to the top at Rochester before giving him another shot, although if another sudden injury situation calls for a spot-start and he has the most rest I can see him going.
  15. By September this might be the only way to be able to sit through a Twins game - pre-anesthetized.
  16. I'm glad for him he's having a good year. The question is what will he do next year? He had good years in 2008 and 2010 only to be followed by stinkers in 2009 and 2011 (and 2012). My guess, and I hope for his sake I'm wrong, is that he'll finish the year strong, and that this will be the year that makes Pittsburgh think they've found something and causes them to keep giving him chances the next two years, which will be sub-par. Nobody has said he doesn't have good stuff. He just has not been consistent from year-to-year. Maybe this time will be different
  17. First, we posted at about the same time, so I didn't see your answer about Ryne's MiLB experience. Second, I was interested in whether there had been any system-wide studies of this. I wasn't interested in Sandberg's case particularly, and looking at one person's background doesn't provide enough on which to judge my question. I'm guessing it wouldn't be too hard to find a counterexample of someone who had good MiLB managerial results and then flopped at the MLB level. My question is, is there a good correlation between the two?
  18. This raises a valid question, I think. Has anybody seen actually stats on manager effectiveness sorted by background experience, i.e. minor league managerial experience, major league coach experience, player only, etc? How valuable is it to have field managers work their way up the ladder in the minors, like players do?
  19. I think this is very likely, and I would have no problem with this. I think there is value to change for the sake of change, particularly after 12 years. Even with the best managers a franchise and a clubhouse can get stale over time. That said, he still has a wealth of baseball experience and in the right role he could really help the franchise going forward.
  20. Nice writeup, and what I thought were some good comments from Radcliff. I particularly liked his comments on the value of facing Triple-A pitching before coming to the majors. You don't want to let top prospects languish there, obviously, but even a month or two of hitting against people who can pitch and not just throw (another nice distinction from Radcliff) would have to help get someone ready for what they will face in the show.
  21. Are the tube socks new or dirty?
  22. I'm not actually watching the game so I don't know what happened, but in general I can't be critical of that. I might very well do the same thing. I know in my head to not interfere with play when the ball is still in the field. But when a baseball comes my direction in a game, I just instinctively reach for it... We could ask Steve Bartman his thoughts.
