  1. Scott Diamond isn't in the Red Wing playoff plans, is he? One more good performance and I can see him taking Gibson's spot......unless they plan on rolling out Blackie for a farewell tour...
  2. And even more unfortunately, Fernandez is untouchable. The Marlins are turning the page on their recent past, Stanton is cheap relative to Fernandez for a number of reasons, especially the fact that the Marlins are willing sellers of Stanton's services.
  3. The OF logjam is why you trade some of that surplus for Stanton. It's a win-win, as certainly the Marlins are looking to bolster the OF with the departure of Stanton. Arcia looks destined to be a Twins DH- not RF, while in Miami, he would instantly be the best offensive player playing Left or Right (throw Kepler or Walker in the deal to help Miami hedge their bet) . The Twins need a strong defensive OF to compete- what with the "logjam" of PTC starting pitching for the forseeable future. Put Stanton in RF, Hicks in LF and Buxton in CF and I challenge anyone to come up with a better defensive OF in all of MLB, plus with 2 elite bats.
  4. Excellent point. Is tomorrow's game, vs. Cleveland, Kyle's last appearance of the year?... He stands to go over 140 combined IP.
  5. The reason it seems "unrecognized" is that it simply isn't true. Thomas certainly doesn't deserve to be a starting CF and that the Twins should, and will, eventually make an upgrade, but that doesn't mean that he Clete no value. His OBP/SLG/OPS batting slash isn't all that far below the median numbers for a MLB CF. And in just 219 PA, his combined WAR in the field and at the plate is much better than replacement level at 0.5. I would think "incredible suckage" would mean he would require a negative WAR number, not a positive one. And Hicks is an inaccurate and invalid comparison to Thomas. His career, flashes of excellence and talented tool set suggests he still has significant upside. Thomas is a finished product, a slightly above-replacement-level 4th/5th OFer. Hicks still can become an annual 3.0 WAR CFer.
  6. That misses the point of my response, which countered the claim that Slowey had a lack of talent. And misses the greater point that the Twins FO has mishandled players in the recent past who appear to display "attitude." And..... actually he was more than good enough. He had a great rookie season and was a very effective P-T-C #5 SP for the next 2 years, until assorted injuries, a strange ST demotion in favor of Blackburn and other "philosophical disagreements" (why....he actually reads and quotes from classical books!) with the coaching staff (leading to the club engaging in a character-assassination-whisper campaign that continues to the present day) led to his falling out with the Twins.
  7. Yeah, that "lack of talent" was why he was a 2nd round draft pick, had a career Twins minor league ERA of 2.13 and why the the Twins were then confident enough in his ability to grant him Super 2 arb status.
  8. I credit Bob Gebhard for recommending him to the Twins, and the Twins acting on his adivice. Credit Glynn as well, for hanging in there all these years and then making the most of his opportunity entering a pretty thankless job in Rochester. Watch the teams line up in the offseason to get Glynn now.
  9. We're really at the point now when the only shock and surprise is that people are shocked and surprised that this organization isn't: 1) all about the money first, and, 2) actively engaged in improving the club 24/7/365.
  10. Both you and I were just that "confident" that Dozier wasn't a major league second baseman- just an occasional tease destined for inevitable failure. Egg on both our faces as Dozier has been proving since late May that what he's doing at the plate (plus a first-rate glove at second) is no fluke or tease- he's becoming a legitimate team leader. We're rebuilding, get a prospect for Morneau, revisit his status and potential availability in the offseason, and in the meantime, give the 200 or so PAs to someone else to help form more conclusive opinions about them.
  11. That would be Gene Glynn, Waseca's own, and Minnesota's first Mr. Basketball. At only 5'10", he's been an over-achiever his whole life. He seems to be nothing short of a miracle worker the last 2 years at Rochester. All of his top-performing players get promoted to fill the gaping holes on the Twins, while the major league disappointments, filler signees and castoffs could potentially come down to Rochester and infect the clubhouse with a malcontented malady. If the Twins make a mistake and don't do something with him in the way of recognition and a promotion, expect other clubs to steal his unique set of talents away from the organization.
  12. I concur. Adding another guy like Deduno and Albers- who both fuel their performances with shots of heart-felt and gutty emotional energy- is an exciting proposition. Berrios seems to have a streak of this "shoulder chip", as well [ 1) His ceiling has been widely pooh-poohed by the national experts because of his short stature- 2) additionally, Berrios is reported to be driven to accepting nothing less of himself than perfection]. Gonsalves could easily end up being the steal of the draft. Unfortunately, between now and the date when he ultimately reaches the Twins Rotation, I expect multiple rounds of Twins FO "attitude adjustment" measures. Hopefully the FO has learned its lesson with Garza, Slowey and Lohse, and finds a happy medium for "chip"- channeling.
  13. New Britain is on the FSN schedule next Monday evening at 6PM. The Twins opponent is the Yankees farm team, the Trenton Thunder, which currently has the 2nd best W-L record the Eastern League. I am hopeful that the Twins and FSN will make adjustments from their Cedar Rapids broadcast. Note to management....Hey guys, less is more! Let Sano and the other prospects let their talent do more of the "talking" this time. I'm really looking forward to this opportunity for a look-in at the near-future, I wonder if there's any chance that Meyer will be done from his rehab and back in the rotation by then?
  14. Trout and maybe Harper seem like the only active player comps. Buxton's defense will end up being superior to both. Torrii Hunter? He makes the Twins HOF, but not the Angels HOF (great career, but really, he's a whole level or two lower than what Buxton can potentially bring to the table), Torrii had one 30HR year, never stole more than 23 bases, never had an OPS above .859 in a single season or an OPS+ above 129 (Trout has already surpassed that number twice and Harper once). I expect Buxton will have at least, more than one 30-30 season and multiple seasons above .900 OPS and OPS+ above 150.
  15. Which at this point in time, should be the essential fact that easily wins the argument. All the rest is on the come. Watch Buxton take it to a whole new level next spring to confirm the argument about #1. This kid is the deal.
  16. Au contrere, Boom Boom! Check your schedules Twinsfans. Sano will be on FSN next week (I believe) on the Twins off-day (Monday?).
  17. The only similarities that should ever be drawn between Buxton and Benson are the first and last letters- B___on. Seriously, many of us around here still don't get it, Buxton will be knocking down the major league door by next July- and will likely be the Twins best player within 1-1.5 years of that last call-up when he finally sticks with the Twins for good.
  18. Admit it. I do. Never saw this one coming. How long before he's out of the organization?
  19. Value to whom? KC was untradeable, tradeability is kind of the point for a team looking to rebuild.
  20. Uhh, that isn't even an apples-and-oranges comparison. Not in the same fruit family, same species, same genus. I'll grant you that both do breathe oxygen for continued sustenance and existence. While Correia has 11 years of major league experience, Gibson has 8 STARTS of major league experience. Gibson is on wearying, soon-to-be expired, and limited, innings, coming off of TJ surgery while learning on the job how to become a big league starter, that lack of ML know-how is a bad combination with his current less-than-his-best stuff. Meanwhile, Correia is coming off of yet another year of a 6 year slide on the downward end of his 11 year career, moving ever-onward in increasing his self-marginalization as a legitimately viable ML SP. Don't get me wrong, these infrequent superior performances by Correia against inferior opponents make the games more fun to watch and I'm happy for him and the Twins.......but I actually got more encouragement in this series from Hendriks's quite similar performance on Friday night. While there still may be the slightest hope that Hendriks can be part of the solution as a #5 starter when the Twins finally turn the corner, Correia simply fills his role as "pretty darn good pitching" placeholder-in-waiting-for-the-return-to-relevancy-when-he-can-be-shown-the-door-already.
  21. Too pessimistic a take for my taste. Consider the players below, added to your scenario above, and watch most of the holes get filled up right quick: Sano (3B), Rosario (LF in your Cano scenario), Pinto ©, Hicks (CF), Santana (SS) are all above A ball- with Arcia (DH) looking like he's finally here to stay. That's 2/3rds of your potential starting lineup right there, that are basically knocking on the door- Buxton is close behind and could easily pass all of them sometime in 2014 (Parmelee, Escobar, Romero and Beresford may yet prove serviceable guys on the ML club, as well). With Stanton in RF, Cano at 2B and Mauer platooning at 1B and PT at C, you are looking at a pretty imposing potential everyday line-up. Obviously, some of the above would likely have to be part of a Stanton trade, but there still wouldn't be nearly as many holes as one might think. In upper level minors pitching, we have Meyer, May, Tonkin, Ibarra, Baxendale, Worley, Diamond, Achter, among others, that's 8 guys for sure who, at the very least, have a good chance to be significant long-term contributors to the major league staff. Meanwhile, the guys who become expendable from the above position player line-up shake-up become available to trade for even more immediately available pitching. And then, in another two years, the wave of players you touted who are currently at A ball start knocking on the door.
  22. 3 years of Arb. They definitely should not trade Sano or Buxton for Stanton, but any other combination should be on the table. These posters on here saying the timing isn't right are wrong, IMO. You never have talent acquisition opportunities all fall right into place strictly according to your own individual timetable. Staggering the building process over several years is more the norm, just because the availability timing is so problematic. Stanton is a very unique situation- it's almost unheard of to have such a young, unreached high ceiling potential guy to be available, and though he's a 4-year veteran, he's really still so young, not much older than the prospects we're counting on to hit the ground running over the next 2-3 years Besides, locking up Stanton for 8 years now as a foundation piece for the next wave, would help convince future potential FA acquisition targets and their agents that the Twins are serious about being competitive sooner, not later. There is no dollar issue, already for next year, nearly $25M is coming off the books with Carroll, Blackie, Butera, Wood and Morneau coming off for sure, and maybe even more gone by trade before 2014 starts. That final number alone, whatever it turns out to be, could very well cover all of Stanton's salary in his 3 Arb years.
  23. This is a sincere inquiry as I am assuming that you might have been directing your comment at my post. Is the accurately descriptive (and neutral in my mind) term "knee-jerk defenders" considered name-calling? If so, I apologize. The original poster wondered if the move was a typical cost-cutting move by the FO and was first mocked for his thought, and then called "ridiculous" by a second poster. Are those "namecalling?" To wit-- Is calling someone's post the "laughingstock" of Twins Daily, name- calling?
