  1. Despite a pretty sketchy season, the Twins still appear to hold out hope that Rosario puts what went down this year entirely in the rear view mirror. Now, what position will he play in the AFL? Will he be in the mix for one of the open OF spots in 2015?
  2. Wow. I said at the time of the trade that I liked Jason Adam a bit, but I didn't see this one coming. It's fair to say that Rogers and Melotakis earned their spots among many others.
  3. Dustin Morse @Twins_morsecode · 34s AFL Rosters announced: Buxton, Kepler, Rosario, Adam, Melotakis & Rogers to join Salt River Rafters. Additional player will be added later.
  4. Add Eddie Rosario to the list.
  5. Good points, all. So long story short, how do Michael's arm and glove currently project as a major league SS? And the players you mentioned didn't pan out very well to draw trade interest.. If Micheal maintains his hitting tool at his current pace, he might raise more interest in trade, especially if he can stick at SS. The Twins, based on where he played this year, currently "seem" to put him behind Polanco, Goodrum, Mejia, Bernier, Florimon. By 2016, most every name on that list will be in the discussion about a 2016 SS roster spot, and the utility spot is equally cluttered in that time frame- perhaps that is the role that the Twins are inviting him to shoot for.
  6. With a little over half an hour to go before it becomes official. Doogie is tweeting furiously. Good news just ahead for the first two AFL spots?
  7. Jeremy, is there an updated opinion on Michael's arm and glove? If he's really off of playing SS the whole season, as it now appears likely and deep behind the SS depth chart behind Polanco, Goodrum, et al, there really is no place for him with the Twins short of a utility role, which the Twins seem to be currently rich in those type of players anyway. If true, that would seem to cast doubt on Michael going to the AFL. I guess we'll find out shortly, but I gotta think that Michael is prime prospect throw-in bait for a trade for other areas of need.
  8. Here was Ryan's quote, earlier in the article, on "The Meyer Plan" for this season: Given that Gene Glynn kept Meyer in before, and then during, the 6th inning, when in every previous game he would have been removed after reaching 90 pitches, let alone 100 throws, it's a good bet that it was a prime showcase opportunity for Meyer in front of the "Player Development GM".. We'll find out soon enough if he passed the Ryan test for preparedness or not, the comment, "he should be fine to go", at this point, is pretty open-ended and can really mean almost anything. But, hopefully not "fine to go" as in July 2015 or something similar.
  9. It seems to me it's "absolutely possible", in the same way it is absolutely possible for every single FA signing to bust. Why do you only single out "Cuban players generally" for special treatment?
  10. Yes. All true. And no one has said different. If we return to the original story from Mike Berardino, in his conversation with Terry Ryan, Ryan chose only to disclose to the reporter of the "player development" GM role of his upcoming activities on his trip to Rochester. To reiterate, here was Ryan's original quote: Given the original article and what Ryan said, not what he didn't say, signing off on Alex Meyer and his next step in 2014, one way or another, appeared to be a main priority for this trip. As Seth previously stated, a new deal with Rochester had probably been in the works for a while now. Apparently, none of the beat writers or other media outlets like Twins Daily, were made privy to this new deal, which was only made public a few hours before last night's game in Rochester. So, it appears that Ryan, at the time he gave the quote to Berardino, hadn't quite closed the deal definitively enough to make a comment, and that negotiations were still pending to finalize the agreement. My comments were related specifically to how the whole thing went down. Apparently, the local ownership wanted an official, game-delaying, on-field ceremony (immediately following the 1st inning)- which was certainly their prerogative- followed by a press conference away from the field while the game proceeded. So yes, Ryan had to have both of his hats on, and in the process, missed quite of bit of Meyer's performance. At this point, we're all left only wondering if Ryan has made an informed-enough decision on whether or not Meyer passed the "prepared to pitch at this level" test, or not.
  11. After booking the cheap non-stop junket to Vegas.... here's a conversation I'd like to see this week instead of the deal with Rochester.... TR: "The Pohlad Family wants to buy you out." Moe Green, the Las Vegas 51s owner: "You think I'm skimming, TR? You buy me out? No I buy you out!... The rumor's out, you don't have that kind of multi-tasking muscle to throw around anymore..... I talked to Colletti... I can make a deal with the Dodgers, and keep the Team!" TR: "I didn't say you were skimming, Moe, just unlucky.... but more importantly, you slapped Carrot Top around one time too many....and Godfather Jim has always had a thing about Carrot Top getting his hair mussed- he deserves Respect! I leave for New Britain, ostensibly to scout Reynaldo Rodriguez and Corey Wemberly [wink-wink], but really to [wink-wink] open up a casino there with Carrot Top as the headliner and officially sign off on the Family's move to Hartford tomorrow, at the end of the first inning... think about a price, Moe..."
  12. FWIW and as an aside, presuming Ryan saw AJ Achter throw tonight, he saw a guy who made a strong case for consideration for promotion. In earning the 3 inning save of the 4-2 Rochester victory, Achter had a line of 0 ER, 3 K 0 BB 1 hit, and lowered his season ERA to 2.51.
  13. Of course the negotiations were done before the game. No one has implied differently. But the press conference apparently happened after the on-field announcement upon completion of the first inning. So you're apparently just wrong about at least the 2nd inning. (Apology accepted in advance.) Note the picture on the Frontier Stadium scoreboard taken of the ceremony right after the first innings was completed,,, presumably followed by the press conference: https://twitter.com/ezenilm1 To repeat, from RedWings official Twitter account:
  14. Yup. I was with Gardy all the way back to ST, and bringing up Meyer to throw out of camp and in the 'pen all season.
  15. Actually, I'd prefer that the Twins get the Vegas franchise, make Moe Green an offer he can't refuse, and move the AAA club to the Midwest in closer proximity to the Twins Cities.
  16. TR, apparently can multi-task, as this press conference was going on even as Meyer was pitching. FWIW, assuming TR got back up in his box, he got to see Alex Meyer throw well enough tonight, but certainly not great. 6 IP, 2 ER 7 hits 4 K 3 BB. He's on track to get the win, as the Wings lead 4-2 after 6 innings completed. The even better good news is that Meyer reached a season high of 105 pitches (66 strikes),and after a visit from Gene Glynn, he was allowed to throw to one of his evening's nemeses tonight, with a man on and two out, and get the final out of the 6th inning, in a 6 pitch battle (5 straight strikes), resulting in a force play to 2nd. I don't know what grade Meyer will get from TR tonight for being "prepared", but he appeared to battle and fight through 6 innings on a night where he didn't have his best stuff. Up to 128 innings now on the season, it will be quite interesting what Ryan decides to do with him after his final start for Rochester this weekend. Stay tuned.
  17. Questions about the September call-ups? I don't think so. Priorities....and "Prepared".
  18. It sounds like a bigger priority for Terry Ryan than watching Alex Meyer pitch this evening is in finalizing an extension agreement with the Red Wings: Priorities. Uggh. http://www.democratandchronicle.com/story/sports/baseball/minors/2014/08/25/red-wings-twins-extend-affiliation/14577249/
  19. Never understood the mid-season snub. Do you have any idea who is doing the voting in this (well-deserved) post-season honor?
  20. Bubble burster, maybe, but Tomas might be better than Castillo, and four years younger. Whatever the case, it's a safe bet that the Twins won't be in on most of these Cubans in the DR, unless it's the "quantity over quality" type, that they seem to prefer.
  21. The Twins FO are masters at feeding well-after-the-fact info to folks like Doogie, ie., that they were "right there" at the end of negotiations and in the running for the latest missed FA signing that ended up doing well for another team, this little snippet then gets reinterpreted and semi-mythologized, eventually becoming "common knowledge" as the Twins fighting the good fight and just missing out, as the "2nd highest bidder".
  22. Except for the major signs in his current corner-turning streak since July 13? I suspect Moore's review of Kepler has been "in the can" for at least a month. Want power production in the FSL, a premium pitcher's league? He's not ever going to match Adam Brett Walker in pure power, but in his last 29 games, 115 PAs, Kepler has an ISO of .175, SLG of .515 and an OPS of .918. And these numbers have accelerated significantly in 78 PAs in the month of August: ISO .223 SLG .556 OPS .941. The concerns about hitting left-handers is probably justified, and there's still a long way to go for Kepler to have hopes of becoming a solid every-day major leaguer.... but I think he's still got a good shot at being a decent platoon starter as a corner OF or 1B. He needs to continue to be pushed, this time to AA, where he'll have plenty of protection in a loaded 2015. Rock Cats lineup
  23. I guess a grudging admission on your part is a start. Sorry, but the whole main argument by the Twins PR department in building the stadium in the first place was that the added "revenue streams" would keep the Twins competitive, year in and year out, with the big market teams in taking a little more risk and signing a FA like Abreu every other year or so. Talk about an understatement on your part, Abreu wouldn't have been a "relative value" to the Twins, he'd now be by far the most popular player on the team, and already well on the way to making back the entire nut on his contract in only his first season. Rusney appears to hold less potential than Abreu, but it's obvious that the price on available Cubans has now escalated- missed the boat again, Twins FO. As a result, even though there's a glaring need for an OFer, and oodles of $$$ to spend, I'm fairly certain that the Twins have already deemed Yasmani Tomas well out of their price range.
  24. Except that they did nothing of the sort in last three cases for promoting the best pitcher possible over the last 2 seasons. On the Vargas question, they had many chances to call up Vargas after the player control date, but before the Super 2 date, oft-times when they were clearly short a bat, but they opted instead for the extra pitcher, third catcher or finally, Kendrys Morales. (I can't fault them on the Polanco call-up, they clearly needed an extra infielder in that case).
  25. Sadly, this is my likely conclusion, as well. How many of these UCL injuries, even strains, get progressively better, don't they usually get progressively worse? And it's unfortunate, as Pino seems like a great guy, and could fit well into the Swarzak/Deduno role, plus something more, all at a rock bottom price.
