  1. I've been reading twitter and a few write ups and though the baseball guys don't like it, but I've seen scouts who say its fair. Meyers has had some injury issues, and though I'd hesitate to say any of the Royals top prospects of the past 5-7 years have been bust, but none of them have really amounted to the hype, so with this the Royals are saying hey, we are going to try to win. If they win 85 games, get some people to show up, maybe they make a trade at the dead line, and show that they are going for it. It is the right move for them.
  2. I never thought the Twins handled the guy well, they had him as a starter 100% of the time yet other then a couple of emergency starts he was a bullpen guy in the majors. Seemed like if thats what they thought he was they should have tried to convert him full-time. I thought he deserved a chance as much as anyone last year to start, he just never got it.
  3. I agree with the don't trade with the Rays, they haven't been on the losing end of a trade for a while. While saying that, I wouldn't mind to have Terry Ryan make a phone call to the Rays about Willingham as they could use a big bat in their lineup. They could send a ready #3 starter and middle infielder and then a lower level B prospect. At the same time I don't know if this deal is terrible for the Royals, they have to at least look like they are trying one of these years. You can't have the top farm system in baseball every year and expect the fans to think that is successful when you are below .500
  4. I like the comparison to Hunter, but I remember how bad Hunter struggled his first year. Actually watched him live 1 year where he was called up in August I think and remember him having a .192 (or something like that) batting average and many of the people at the game thought he was a bust and wouldn't amount to nothing. I'm dead against getting a placeholder though. There is too many outfielders with high upside in the system to have to put up with a guy with a major league contract who isn't any better.
  5. Unless HIcks is head and shoulders better then Benson there really isn't a point of Hicks over Benson. Its not like he lit up AA in the first place, and second you have the service time issue. If Benson is healthy I let him run with it through April and then re-evaluate the situation. The club will need to have a 4th outfielder who can play center anyways and I get the impression they don't want to put a place holder out there, so I look at it as Benson or Hicks, as Mastro will either be the starting CF or 4th OF. If its Hicks though I think he has to play everyday, and I just look at his AA numbers and everything else and I just think AAA would do him some major help. I do wish though they would have called up Hicks last September because of this situation.
  6. I think the Twins are making a play for 2014, and that is why they are hesitant to trade Willingham. Even though they have traded Span and Revere, how many 2014 WAR's do they translate to over the replacements of some combo of Hicks/Benson/Parmelee/Arcia? I'm going to say not too many. And because of that I think thats why I'm against and the FO is against a fire sale. I'd still be shopping Carroll as there appears to be some type of market out there for that type of player, and it would cut some more salary. I think Willingham and Morneau are deadline guys where if they feel they are close in 2014 they might try to resign Morneau, keep Willingham and make a play, if not they would trade both, also depends on the market. Its all a crap shoot but I don't see the Twins having a worse team after making these moves
  7. If Hannahan is really in a bidding war, the Twins should be shopping Carroll, cut another 3 million in salary and find someone else. I wouldn't be against Chone Figgins, though I get the impression if healthy and looks decent in ST Joe Benson has a job with the Twins its just whether or not he is starting or not. Which I'm not against, he has already been up, and if healthy he has as high of ceiling as anyone else in the organization.
  8. I agree, you can fault him for trades and contracts but drafts I don't think so.
  9. not to bad of an extension, I think the ultimate decision on this contract will be dependent on how often he is available. He didn't pitch enough innings last year, some of that was injury history, but he will need to pitch more meaningful innings and do so successful.
  10. How many of this list of 15 do we give Bill Smith credit for? Sano and 2-3 others prolly. He was only there what 2 years?
  11. IDK, I think it will depend greatly on who is ranking them. I think when it comes to prospect value they are up there, but if you look at positional depth, like infielders, top line pitching and AAA-AA talent its lower. There are some glaring holes from high A- AAA with pitchers, infielders and that top prospect lighting it up to say they are a top 5 farm system. But Arcia, Hicks, Benson (if healthy), Gibson, Meyer, May do have quite a bit of value, add that with the lower level value (Buxton, Rosserio, Berrios, Kepler, Wheeler) and you see the overall value of a top 10-15 farm system.
  12. If you look at Joe Benson's numbers throughout the minors, in years where he is healthy he screams top prospect and years where he was bothering injuries he looks like a complete bust. If he is healthy its his to lose. Hicks has not played AAA, he was good but not great at AA, he has a bunch of tools but I'm not completely sold on saying its all his. As far as Mastro, I just don't know, I don't know if he can be an everyday major leaguer. I don't know if he can play CF with Parmelee and Willinghammer and I feel he could really be exposed to everyday play. I think you have to go in house though.
  13. I think the Twins are listening, not so much shopping. I'm shocked though with some of these deals that Willingham's name has yet to be brought up somewhere.
  14. If Benson is healthy I'd give it to him, he is at that point where I don't know if AAA does him any good, if he is struggling by the middle of May, then he goes down, but I think he needs a sink or swim moment. Whereas Hicks I think can benefit from AAA much more. I'm still betting Mastro gets it at least for April.
  15. Two things, 1 position, 2 he has to approve. He isn't going to leave the Rangers for the Twins, and 2 where do you play him?
  16. CDog.... the Twins have yet to trade their manager, so I have a very good suspicion Carroll will start. Wouldn't be surprised if Mastronni (sp) is 1 and Carroll is 2, just how Gardy thinks things through sometimes.
  17. I'm sure you mean Twins could deal Willingham not Hamilton. That would be interesting. I'm sure the Braves, Mariners, Yankees and Rangers as well as a few others could all be involved if the Twins were serious about trading him. I think its wide open. Sounds like its Benson or HIcks if ready if not Mastronni will man it until one of the two is ready.
  18. I think this trade is one that you won't be able to get a great view on the trade for a few years.
  19. I think Willingham can bring a good return now, but he could bring more at the deadline if he has a solid season. Morneau, and who knows with some of these trades and contracts being handed out, I see with much more upside trading at the deadline then now, unless someone really loves him. As for the trade, its a great return, I'm not a TR fan, but he isn't too bad when it comes to trades, its more dumb signings and bad day to day (DL, call ups) that drive me nuts. As for who plays in CF, I think some of it comes to spring training, don't know if they want to put Hicks out there right away, though I think it is prolly his to lose, see how Benson comes back from injury, he had a rough year injury wise. The one issue I have with him is I don't know if he can play CF with Parmelee and Willingham at the corners.
  20. Very good return for Revere, I'd start shopping Willingham right now as well.
  21. With some of the contracts being handed out Willingham needs to be shopped around. Revere though I think can get a decent prospect in return. but will have to be lower in the system. He won't get anything close to what Span got, but at the same time its a numbers game, where you have depth at that position, sell what you have for what you can get and let them sink or swim out there.
  22. If Morneau has a solid couple of months he could be a hot commodity come July, other then dumping salary I just don't really see the benefit of trading him now, as I'd be shocked if he brought anything in return in terms of prospects. He had a decent year, this year but remember he was dealing with wrist problems as well. If the wrist, neck and concussions are fine he could have a solid year. At the same time if someone wants Revere or Willingham I think they need to think about it, if they can return something in terms of high ceiling pitchers I'd take a look. There is too much depth both close (Parmelee, Hicks, Arcia, Benson) and far (Kepler, Buxton, as well as others). That if an offer is on the table for Revere or Willingham you would have to really consider it.
  23. Look who the Twins are after and tell me that Liriano for less then 5 million on a 1 year deal is not a bad move? At worst I think he can help in the bullpen, but I think with Cuellar on the staff could help Liriano at least become a decent starter. His SO numbers weren't terrible, when he had control he was good, he still gave up some HR's but he will. And again if he is pitching decent he can be traded at the deadline.
  24. I'm not sure on the minor league part or how that part even works, but other then Slama I'd be shocked if anyone was taken, and then if anyone was taken if they were kept. The Twins outrighted a fair amount of players, who could have been had for no money and without having to keep them on the major league roster.
  25. I agree with the aspect that the Twins should spend money, and the fans should expect and want them to spend money. But I think if they want to spend money just to spend money they are hurting the franchise for years to come. Now because of the draft/cba situation a little bit more organizational money is able to go to payroll, however if you start giving 3-4-5 year deals to 35+ year old pitchers or pitchers with arm problems, you are asking for trouble. Now at the same time that doesn't mean you go dumpster diving to get your rotation but you still have to be somewhat smart about it.
