  1. I was listening to that interview too - I don't think I heard Pelfrey's name mentioned even once.
  2. Joking aside about the contract, Pelfrey is a Minnesota Twin currently, and is under contract for the 2015 season. Of the starting Pitchers currently in the mix for the 2015 rotation, Pelfrey is probably 5th, 6th, or 7th depending on how you rate Alex Meyer and Tommy Milone. I definitely think that Pelfrey is an asset - I'd rather the Twins be able to turn to a healthy version of Mike Pelfrey once every five days than some of the marginal AAAA guys. But healthy is the key point - so that's going to have to be his goal for the bulk of the off-season and Spring Training. Showing the team that he's past the injuries of this year. Maybe he can thrive in the bullpen - I wonder how open he will be to that role.
  3. It sure was! Was there legitimate reason to think he would have signed anywhere else for a two year deal? Or that he wouldn't be perfectly happy with a one year deal from the Twins? I know that your quote is being taken out of context, but a little bit of coffee came shooting out of my nose when I read that sentence.
  4. There was this article in July about his midsummer swoon - http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/what-happened-to-brian-dozier/ he's really improved his plate discipline relative to that bad month of July, and it seems like he's adjusting to the league's new approach to pitching him. I think the average isn't going to move too much one way or the other, but he remains very valuable to the lineup with his combo of power/speed/patience at the plate.
  5. Seeing the splits, it is encouraging that he's cut down a bit on the strikeouts - putting more balls in play is always a good thing, assuming he's swinging at strikes.
  6. I generally have no problem with a team signing players to the low-risk high-upside minor league deal. It becomes a problem with that signing is made in a position of need and the minor league deal is secretly (or not so secretly) the "solution" to the problem (see Kubel, Jason). It's awesome if a team signs a guy to a minor league deal and he plays his way onto the 40-Man and then the 25-Man roster. It's another thing entirely to have to use that player out of desperation.
  7. Remember that scene in Rocky IV where Rocky goes into the mountains and trains like crazy while Ivan Drago is getting pumped up with the best Russian pharma can buy? Mauer should return to camp with a giant beard and a montage video of him running around the lakes, chopping wood, and doing one-handed pushups with his twins sitting on his back " .298, .299, .300!" There ya go Twins PR department, that first idea's free.
  8. Night and day compared to what - to the last time Cederstrom was home plate umpire and Pinto caught? Or compared to Suzuki? And was it a positive or a negative night and day?
  9. Speaking of Defense - any chance there will be a list of top 10 Twins Minor League Fielders? Or maybe an internal version of Gold Glove awards for the Minor League System? Pitching, rightfully, is emphasized a lot on TD - but the other key component lacking on the ML club is defensive ability. I'm curious if the experts have some insight into the development of gloves in the Twins' system.
  10. If there's more than one butcher in the outfield, the result is a bloodbath on defense. Arcia, I agree, will have to prove that he should keep his job with improved defense and plate discipline next year. He is capable of some impressive plays on both sides of the game, so with another season of experience now he should be starting to put it all together for 2015 and beyond. He doesn't have to be Torii out there in RF, just better than he's shown to this point. Left and Center are big problems. Everybody's waiting for Buxton to arrive, but even a "can't miss" prospect is still a risk for injury (as we've seen this year). If he makes it, he'll probably be the star everyone says he will be, but he still has a way to go and a lot can happen in two years. Arcia in RF is likely the only spot that is set at the moment; all I want for Christmas this year is for the Twins to add a ML-Ready starting LF via Free agency or trade. Adding a short term CF (probably via trade) would really help as well. Schafer and Hicks can battle for the 4th Outfielder position.
  11. In this vein, I wonder if Mientkiewicz will be ok with losing for a season or two until everyone he coached in single A makes it up to the big leagues. If he joins the Twins as the manager in 2015, will his expecatations be reasonable given the level of talent on the team? Ultimately, I think that unless Terry Ryan is fired, Gardy will finish his current contract. He may have to grudgingly accept a new Pitching Coach and/or some other fresh faces on his staff next year, but I get the feeling he will stick around one more year. I think if everyone gets promoted with the players in 2015 (meaning coaching staffs move up a level), 2016 is a realistic date for Mientkiewicz to manage the Twins.
  12. That's about what I figured given his age. We'll have to just wait another couple years for the Miracle's Outfield to make it up to the Show then.
  13. Do other teams want to hire away coaches from our system? I don't know of any rumors related to the vacancies in Texas (Rangers or Houston Astros) and managers or bench coaches here. It does seem to me that one indicator for how your coaching staff is working relates to how much they are in demand by the rest of the league. Dave Martinez gets mentioned a lot - working in the Rays system for Joe Maddon and is considered to be a great teacher and manager in his own right. Does anyone hear about other teams praising the Twins' coaches? Or about other teams with potential vacancies (TX, Arizona) being interested in interviewing the Twins' staff? Maybe it's a lack of interest from the Twins' staff, or the Twins' front office not granting permission (or just keeping a tight lid on rumors), but it seems to me like they are not being courted by other organizations. Is it just me?
  14. Great article - love to see that there's a mix of levels represented, something to look forward to. Is Reynaldo Rodriguez a guy that could move up? Does he profile as a career minor leaguer, or is there any chance he would be competing for a job in Left Field for the Twins in Spring Training? Assuming they don't find a ML ready Free agent, that position is pretty wide open in 2015.
  15. Molitor's only other coaching gig was as Seattle's Hitting Coach in 2004. Otherwise, he's been with the Twins as a roving instructor or as the bench coach.
  16. I didn't realize this, but Scott Ullger had 7 winning seasons (4 playoff appearances, one Championship) as a minor league manager in the late 80's and the 90's. He coached A, AA, and AAA teams and never had a losing record. http://www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/Scott_Ullger I highly doubt that he'd be in the running to replace Gardenhire, but, then again, who knows? There were plenty of people thinking that Molitor would get the job back in 2001...
  17. How about Chuck Knoblauch? He's intense and won championships with both the Twins and other organizations... ok, that's the last "outside the box idea for manager" joke from me on this thread, I promise. My guess is that if Gardy is not here in 2015, it will be Molitor. I think Mientkiewicz would be the choice as successor in a few years, assuming he moves up a level or two in the meantime.
  18. Ladies and gentlemen, the next Twins field manager will be Joe Vavra! jk
  19. Assuming Rick Anderson is not retained for next season, who should take his place? Bobby Cuellar seems like he'd be next in line to take the gig - does it seem like he would be a significant improvement? What about getting a guy from the minor league system? I don't know much about him beyond reading interviews on TD, but Ivan Arteaga from the Cedar Rapids team seems like a really smart coach. second assuming - - if Gardy/Anderson et al are done after this season, will the coaching staffs in the minors start getting moved up the ladder, or is the general consensus of people in the know that the org. likes the coaches right where they are? EDIT TO ADD: My guess is that if Anderson is let go, Gardy will resign. If those two are gone, I'm guessing Ullger and Vavra will be gone as well, but the Twins may retain Molitor and Steinbach (especially if they make Molitor the new manager, I think Steinbach will be back too). I don't know if Cuellar will stick around at that point, but I get the sense that he is well liked by org.
  20. Are you suggesting that not all Twins' prospects will hit like Danny Santana and Kennys Vargas as soon as they hit the majors?
  21. Pretty fun last night, just one rain delay and a couple spotty downpours. 5th inning felt like it was dragging forever (especially the top of the 5th - wasn't sure if May was going to make it out alive). The Vargas homer was worth the price of admission alone.
  22. hey - J.B. Shuck was DFA'd . . . http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/09/angels-designate-michael-kohn-j-b-shuck.html Twins could use a cost controlled outfielder like him...
  23. I've got tickets for Wednesday night - hoping the rain stays away.
  24. Santana is probably a more realistic target, especially considering there were rumors swirling that the Twins already tried signing him last offseason. I wonder how close they were. Santana made $14.1MM this year - I wonder if exactly $15MM / year would be enough to sign him for multiple years.
