  1. That doesn't make a damned bit of sense. How is it riskier to give a guy $100m than to... not give a guy $100m? *blank stare*
  2. I never implied that the Twins were saving money for later seasons. My point is that the Twins aren't going to spend $15m a season on a pitcher now AND pay another $15m a season for another pitcher in three seasons. Time your big FA acquisitions to match your competitiveness. As for Cliff Lee, well... I'm not going to argue decline phase with you. Players, by and large, get worse with age. That's a fact. For every Cliff Lee, I can show you two Johan Santanas. And it'd be a damned shame to waste a 2008 Johan Santana on this team only to be stuck with the 2011 version when the team is ready to be competitive.
  3. Well yeah, much of Hicks' leadoff ability will depend on his plate discipline. It was good through the minors but is pretty up and down right now.
  4. Rickey Henderson thinks it's okay for leadoff guys to hit home runs and I agree with him. Buxton may be too good as an overall hitter for leadoff but Hicks is fine, even as a 15+ HR guy.
  5. Parmelee OPS+: 96 Morneau OPS+: 103 I'm having a hard time figuring out why the Twins should pay Morneau $20m over two years when they can get similar production for $1m. I don't care if they have 20 bazillion dollars in the bank, that's just... dumb.
  6. He's there as a warning to kids: "This is what happens when you try to go first-to-third on an infield single to short. Also, don't do crack."
  7. Eh, bad choice of words. I meant "higher risk" in the sense of signing someone like Ryan "My Arm Might Fall Off in Spring Training Because I'm Old" Dempster to a two year deal. The type of deal where you overpay to get someone with significant risk but only for a year or two. Overall, the contract is lower risk but the player is higher risk.
  8. Unless it's 2016, Sanchez is either not pitching or ineffective, and the Twins are handing him $17m every season to do little or nothing. The typical veteran decline arc means it's a pretty bad idea to sign a guy to a five year deal when you can't realistically compete until year three of said contract. If you're going to lose, just lose... Keep that money for a guy when you're ready to compete and then get the best 1-2 years out of that player while you're competitive. Of course, none of this stops the front office from taking on shorter term, higher risk contracts to make the team not-awful during those bridge years.
  9. Trading Doumit and pursuing Napoli would be a great move for 2014. I don't really care who plays first in 2014 but the Twins should be thinking "cheap" or "better", not "stick with what we got".
  10. He's a 20 year old OPSing .827 in AA. I don't know if I'd call that "really struggling". He's scuffling only when compared to his own A+ numbers, which were basically a video game stat line. AA is the level in which hitters start seeing guys who throw harder with better command and plus breaking pitches. It's not terribly surprising to see Miguel's stat line dip significantly as he adjusts to better pitching.
  11. Especially when this team is going to start seeing more OF help come from the minors in 2014 and they're already struggling to get Parmelee playing time every day. Hey, Parmelee could fall on his face in the second half and Justin could dominate. Nothing is set in stone but given how this season is playing out, I don't see the point in keeping Justin just for the sake of keeping him.
  12. This. Justin Morneau has actually regressed in 2013. That's a terrible sign for him going forward. He had an awful 2011. He was much better in 2012, especially in the second half. Going into this season, it wasn't absurd to expect continued progression to above-average hitting. After 250 PAs in 2013, he's not only failing to progress from the second half of last season, he's actually going in the wrong direction. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if Parmelee finishes the season with an OPS equal or better to Justin. At that point, how on earth do you justify giving Morneau money? I don't care if the Twins have money to spend, that's just dumb baseball management. You don't take playing time from a 25 (26 in 2014) year old player making the league minimum just so you can spend money on a veteran who is no better than the youngster.
  13. Yeah, there's no reason to send him down at this point. In the past 2 1/2 months, he's been pretty close to league average with the bat. I was all for giving him more time in AAA to shake off the rust but it doesn't appear that he needed it. So why send him down now? He's obviously learning at the MLB level. Don't mess with that progression. If he stalls out and struggles, then consider a demotion.
  14. Actually, I think it is a little early to suggest that Hicks will end up as a league average CF. His defense has been spotty, for sure... but given his speed and arm, he should be, at minimum, a league average defender. On the other hand, the average AL OPS for CF is .733. Toss out Hicks' awful April and he's somewhere just north of a .720 OPS in May/June/July. The guy has all of 230 PAs in his career after skipping a level. He's 23 years old. It's a bit premature to think that his progression is going to be limited to roughly .010 OPS as he learns the league, gets his feet under him, and continues to age toward the prime age 26-27 seasons. Given his rapid improvement in just two months, I think it will be a pretty big disappointment if he stalls out completely and never manages to OPS much higher than .750, which is still above average for a CF.
  15. I don't get it but it's how things play out on message boards. No matter how many times we go through these same arguments over young players, there will still be people who cast judgment after 200 PAs at the beginning of a guy's career. It's maddening, really. See Kubel, Jason... Cuddyer, Michael... Bartlett, Jason... Morneau, Justin... Young, Delmon... One of those guys was a bust but I heard multiple people calling for the heads of every guy on that list at one point or another. Honestly, it makes me want to scream.
  16. On top of that, the Twins rarely have problems retaining players. It seems that while it may be tricky to get them here in the first place, once a player is here, they seem to like the area and team and stick around if offered market value (Pavano, Doumit, etc.).
  17. Twins: Brian Dozier 2B Joe Mauer C Ryan Doumit DH Justin Morneau 1B Trevor Plouffe 3B Oswaldo Arcia LF Chris Parmelee RF Aaron Hicks CF Pedro Florimon SS (Samuel Deduno P) Rays: Desmond Jennings CF Luke Scott DH Ben Zobrist 2B Evan Longoria 3B James Loney 1B Wil Myers RF Matt Joyce LF Jose Molina C Yunel Escobar SS (Roberto Hernandez P)
  18. No, the difference is between nobody and Dempster. I was not and am not a fan of the Correia signing but if Ryan had picked up a legitimately good starter to pitch in front of KC, I would have been okay with him as a secondary FA acquisition. Maybe not an A grade but he'd probably rate a B. But Saunders and Correia, no, that wouldn't change the grade much. That's a pretty ****ty offseason, though still better than what we got.
  19. Twins: Brian Dozier 2B Joe Mauer 1B Ryan Doumit C Justin Morneau DH Trevor Plouffe 3B Chris Parmelee RF Clete Thomas LF Aaron Hicks CF Pedro Florimon SS (Scott Diamond P) Blue Jays: Jose Reyes SS Jose Bautista RF Edwin Encarnacion 1B Adam Lind DH Mark DeRosa 3B Rajai Davis LF Colby Rasmus CF J.P. Arencibia C Maicer Izturis 2B (Todd Redmond P)
  20. Yep. Some people tend to forget that the GM position involves a lot of public positioning. JR is a pretty straight speaker. Listen to the posturing by other GMs before throwing too many bricks.
  21. I advocated that he spend a month in AAA after the injury but progress isn't linear. He's not going to post a better OPS every month. What matters is that he's getting the reps and learning.
  22. Which is why I'm not mentioning position players. For the most part, I'm fine with the positional squad the Twins rolled out on opening day. Picking up one more FA starter would have allowed the AAAA vets to still get their starts, the front office only needed to use a shorter leash.
  23. Why on earth would you care about his April? He was awful, as many rookies are in their first handful of ABs. What matters is how he's progressing, not how he started. The kid is 23 years old. Look at the age 23 seasons of Hunter or Gomez before labeling Hicks as a 4th OFer.
  24. Would you have been happier if he publicly trashed Vance after a win? I don't put much stock in wins and losses but toughing it out and getting the victory when things aren't working for you counts for something. It shouldn't be completely ignored.
  25. Then why was Gomez mediocre for two seasons with the Brewers? The most likely scenario is a mix of the Mets rushing Carlos, the Twins continuing where they left off, and Carlos being a bit of a late bloomer.
