Goldeyes vs Saints

Was up in Winnipeg this week and caught a couple of pre-season Goldeyes games against the Saints, pretty entertaining (although that perception may have been aided by the many samples of Fort Garry Breweries new Angry Fish Pilsner, introduced at the park this year). Nonetheless I was impressed with more than a few players, got a charge out of seeing Nick Carr throw the crap out of the ball for an inning, got between 95-98 on the gun a half dozen times, all for strikes.

 

If anybody is ever in town for any reason it is more than worth your while to catch a game at Shaw Park, the best little independent park in baseball, always loads of fun and easy on the wallet.

Nope, he was released and he has retired.

That's funny to think about, but in a word, no.

The Saints would manhandle Beloit and beat Ft. Myers.

They would probably lose to New Britain in a seven game series.

Their league is generally considered between high A and AA ball.

 

The Saints Rosters consist of players who were mediocre in low A ball going all the way up to Shane Costa who played three years in the Major Leagues. Throw in everyone in between and you have an interesting Roster.

That's interesting, it's something I've wondered about. I guess I always assumed since it was an independent league, nobody in it was ever on the major league radar and that it was generally inferior to any of the official minor league spectrum. Thanks for clarifying that.

Jeff Zimmerman who made the All-Star team with the Rangers in 1999, played for the Goldeyes in '97. He signed as a free agent with Texas the following year and had a good 3 year run.
