  1. I know it’s 1 start for Dietrich Enns, but his start highlights how he should pitch in the bullpen while Gonsalves should be pitching in the rotation in Rochester.
  2. Nice AAA debut for Romero. Keep in mind too that 2 of the 5 hits given up by Romero were infield hits. I think as time goes on he’ll look even more impressive.
  3. I hope Thorpe can recover well from this game. I hope this is just an “adjustment” period and after a clanker or two he shows improvement.
  4. I look forward to see how good Tyler Wells does this year. If he’s healthy I think he’s going to surprise a lot of people this year. I think it’s unrealistic to believe he’ll make it to Rochester, but like Berrios in 2014 I think Wells could easily be promoted to AA by the All Star break and be knocking on the door to Rochester by season’s end.
  5. So, I take it the minor league pitchers are on more of a pitch count limit? Littell looked good stat wise, but only pitched 4.1 innings, and Sammons for Cedar Rapids pitched 4 innings of no run ball and 6 k’s. I would have thought both could have pitched deeper into the game, but I suppose they have to do more to protect those young arms.
  6. I think Wells will possibly make it to Rochester before the year is done (so long as he is healthy). He was flat out dominant in A ball until injuries made him look less dominant. I think a lot of scouts will be surprised how good Tyler Wells is this year.
  7. I’m excited to see how Tyler Wells does this year. If not for injuries last year I believe he’d of been a higher regarded prospect. I mean last year he averaged around 12 K’s per 9 between A ball and Rookie ball (where he rehabbed). If healthy I think he might be a high riser this year.
  8. I hope the Twins aren’t sending Duffey to be part of the rotation in Rochester. Again there is a pitcher in Chattanooga who shouldn’t be in Chattanooga (or in Chattanooga for long), if the Twins keep adding more to the rotation in Rochester when would you know who get his shot?
  9. I am hopeful he can take the next steps in his development this year. If he can improve his change and tighten up command of his fastball that will make him better imo. He has done a great job of limiting damage during Spring Training he hasn’t looked dominant this Spring. I hope he is well because he’s a big part of our rotation this year.
  10. The problem I have with Romero in AA is there is nothing indicating that the Twins FO will be aggressive in promoting Romero. I mean look to last year, Stephen Gonsalves pitched MOST of last year in AA even after dominating AA the year before. It’s that over cautious, conservative mindset that has me doubting that Romero will be moved faster this year. Let’s be honest, as long as he’s healthy this year the goal should be for Romero to start next year as a part of the Twins rotation. For that to happen he should get at least some cameo time for the Twins this year, how will that be possible if he burns most of his innings in AA he’s not going to pitch at all for the Twins. From what I have seen, it is rare that the Twins call up a AAer to pitch for the Twins.
  11. To me not pushing Romero to AAA shows a lack of trust that Romero has indeed improved over Spring Training from last year. Also there a quite a few organizational “fillers” in Rochester (Enns, Jaye, Jorge, Slegers) I mean 1 or more of those pitchers could be moved to the bullpen as it’s not nessisary to have that many organizational “fillers” in the rotation in Rochester. Also I thought by mid July last year that Romero had done enough to warrant a promotion to Rochester it was silly to watch how slow the FO was about this, in fact I thought they took too long to promote Gonsalves and should have promoted Romero (to AAA) and Thorpe (to AA) as well. And as for wanting Romero to develop his change and improve his slider well there have been reports out that part of Romero’s successs this Spring Training is from not over throwing his fastball, and use of better mechanics, an improved slider and change. I get being conservative with a player if they aren’t close to being ready for the Bigs. But from all I have heard Romero is much further along than they’d want to admit.
  12. Well first off Joe has to remain productive. It would also help not only for his OBP to remain high, but to bat over .300 and not show signs of decline. Also he’s going to have to accept a 3 yr or so deal worth about $10 million per season. Joe is not worth anything over that. If he accepts those terms then I’m sure he will retire a Twin.
  13. I am excited he’s a part of our staff. I think he’ll rub off some on Berrios. What I mean is just the mental toughness (aka bulldog approach) on the mound. With Lynn we now have a competent MLB pitching staff with few outstanding weaknesses. But I think he’ll be gone next year. While we’ll probably lose Santana and possibly Gibson we will get Pineda, May (?), and should be ready for Gonsalves or Romero to join the rotation full time next year.
  14. The problem I have is with the AAA rotation as it is there is no clear “fast track” for Romero to join Rochester within a month. To be honest even if you look at the starting pitchers in Rochester other than Stephen Gonsalves there is not 1 starter that has the potential of Romero. I really don’t want to see Romero in Chattanooga through May (or into June for that matter). With this being the second option year for Romero there has to be a more concerted effort (as long as he is pitching as well as he should) to start to fast track him to the Twins before he loses all options. As for Thorpe he kinda needs to start the year in AA. The goal should be to get Thorpe close to or in AAA before his innings limit shuts him down for the season. While his age could seem to make it easier to “hold him back” we shouldn’t waste part of his option year in A+ ball when he clearly pitched well enough for the promotion. Also Thorpe is one of the higher regarded pitching prospects the Twins have so in effect it would do better to aggressively promote him to AA in hopes that there is the chance he gets his first call-up to the Bigs sometime next year.
  15. Still he doesn’t belong there. Wasting innings in AA takes away from the innings he can pitch in AAA and in the Majors. Plus it’s possible him being in Chattanooga would send Lewis Thorpe back to Ft Myers. Romero deserves to be in Rochester to start the season. I mean if he’s healthy for this year and goes into camp next year shouldn’t he have a legit opportunity to compete for a spot in the rotation? If he pitches under 100 or so innings in Rochester this year no matter what he will start next season in Rochester, even if he is ready for the Bigs.
  16. At this point regardless Romero has forced himself at least to AAA. Honestly he should have been promoted to AAA after the All Star break last year. Sure the Twins organization was limiting his innings per start, but until the last 4 starts he was arguably the best starting pitching prospect the Twins had. Why stunt his growth by starting him in a level he pretty much already mastered. If anything Rochester can start with a 6 man rotation to stretch out starts for Romero so he doesn’t burn up most of his innings before the All Star break. What I see with Romero’s success this spring is first off being effective with his fastball, his slider looks better plus his change has improved and he’s willing to use it more. Plus he is using his 2 seamer (which sits between 90-92) more often. It sounds like his overall velocity on average might be down, but he has the extra gear to get his fastball to the upper 90’s to around 100. It just sounds like his focus is maintaining himself to be a starter with his already exceptional stuff.
  17. I think it’s possible...if he’s lights out in Rochester. I mean if he goes and pitches 2 months in Rochester and has an ERA under 2, whip around 1 (or under), is averaging 9+ k/9, and has a batting average against around or under .200 then he might be up before we think.
  18. Here is the thing, since Romero is on his second option on the 40 man he should start in AAA. I mean until his shoulder injury happened in August resulting in 4 poor outings he was all but ready to be called up to Rochester last year. With his innings limit and second year option being on the 40 man he, not Zack Littell should start in Rochester (this is after all Littell’s first year on the 40 man), and also Thorpe should start in Chattanooga as he has his own innings limit and while he will probably burn his first year in the minors it would be great to see him in AAA by years end giving him the opportunity to make his Twins debut in 2019 as a starter. But that’s just my opinion.
  19. I don’t see why he can’t start in AAA, especially because it’s been proven his last 4 starts we’re poor due to injury, not just poor performance by its self. If Romero has a 140-150 innings limit why should 40-60 innings be at AA? Shouldn’t we push him up faster? I mean I’d rather not see Romero in AA and Thorpe in A+ given their innings limits. I’d rather see by the end of the year Romero on the verge of pitching in the bigs and Thorpe in AAA. Also, I hope the Twins try to make Romero stick as a starter, with his arsenal he projects higher then most (save Graterol, Enlow, and possibly Thorpe). Just to give up and stick him in the bullpen seems sad and misguided when there is hope he can be a top of the line starter. And I am not worried if he only has an average change, you know who else has that? Carlos Martinez of the St Louis Cardinals and he is fairly close to what Romero can be as a starter.
  20. Now this I can get behind, especially for what we have up for him. Is he an ace? No, but he is a solid pitcher, someone who can actually add depth for our rotation and not be terrible. Ordorizzi is also around Chris Archer’s age so there is hope he still has some quality seasons ahead of him.
  21. To me the Sanchez signing looks like a move to sign someone because they are “unable” to sign the likes of Jake Arrieta, Lance Lynn, or Alex Cobb. So all this talk about getting a quality starter and the most likely scenario is we wind up with Sanchez only.
  22. I really hope he continues to pitch well. I hope some of his struggles in AAA (he had an ERA over 5) can be ironed out. I think they will as he is coming into the year fully healthy. It really doesn’t sound like he’s that far off, if his breaking pitches are improved he’ll be a better pitcher.
  23. To be honest I am not too upset the Twins didn’t land Darvish, I knew it was more possible they didn’t get him rather than get him. But where I am angry is the lack of motivation to sign an impact starter with the 3 remaining starting pitching free agents. Even if Santana was healthy we knew we are a starter away of competing this year. I mean expectations are higher now so IMO we have to work to meet it. I mean if in the end we sign a lower level starting pitching free agent (who lasts as long as Jason Marquis) and then declare “there’s nothing else we could have done” it looks to the fans the FO doesn’t care to be a winning franchise. I am hopeful Gonsalves and Romero are impact pitchers this year, but that is an unrealistic expectation since neither pitcher has pitched even an inning of big league ball. What makes me mad is it was set up so well for us to make a big slash in free agency and yet, it’s the same old conservative bs.
  24. What I meant was until Carpenter went to St Louis he was mediocre, I mean he literally pitched his way off the Blue Jays (his team prior to pitching in St Louis) roster. If we as a mid market team want to compete let’s get guys who have excellent track records of developing both middle of the road starters (like Kyle Gibson) and youngsters (Berrios, Mejia, Gonsalves, Romero, Littell).
  25. The thing with the Cardinals is they are excellent in developing young pitchers. I mean look at their Opening Day starter: Carlos Martinez, a product of their farm system and they saw a lot of good out of Luke Weaver and have a top pitching prospect in Alex Reyes. Even when they had mediocre starters (Chris Carpenter and Kyle Lohse come to mind) they were able to find their strengths and turn them into better pitchers. If the Twins could do that with the pitchers they have they’d be much better.
