  1. Comparing Josh Willingham's and B.J. Upton's offensive statistics is fine. What about their defensive stats? What else do they bring to the table (experience, knowledge of certain division's pitchers, etc.) I contend that Josh Willingham is more valuable to the Twins than he would be to nearly any other team. He hits his homers along the left field line: Willingham is made for Target Field. Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau are also great hitters – but they are lefties. But their production dropped when they began playing at Target Field – in part because of injuries, but in part because of the field itself. Every field has its quirks, I think the M&M boys are coming back with a huge season in 2013, because their injuries are hopefully behind them, and they're going to take even more advantage of Target Field – not in the same way Willingham does, but they will tweak their game some more yet to take advantage of TF. I know, I know, I'm dreaming. But I see TF becoming less and less a pitcher's field and more of a balanced field between pitchers and hitters. I hope Willingham, Morneau and Mauer will all be around to help the Twins in 2013.
  2. This feels a lot like when you know your car payment is due, but you have to get gas, and you cannot afford both. The Twins went the car payment route – giving up a good player for the potential of a top-of-the-line starter down the road. It won't help them in the immediate future, but it may help later. On the other hand, I checked and Meyers is not on the Twins 40-man roster. As it's only his second year, he doesn't have to be. So the Twins now have two slots open on their 40-man roster, for the Winter meetings. Can we SHOUT trades or Rule 5 Drafts? Meyers was in high A ball. If he starts in AA this spring, and does real well, he could always be a mid-year call-up. It's a real long shot, but a possibility. Actually, I hope the Twins don't trade Willingham. he is built for Target Field. And as far as the outfield goes, I think Hicks will go north with the Twins this spring, and may be their starting left fielder. If the Twins trade anyone else among their top players, I see Morneau going. I would hate that almost as much as Willingham leaving. Mauer is not going anywhere. I would actually rather they trade Parmelee or Plouffe instead of Morneau. Give Morneau one more year with Mauer with the Twins.
  3. Here are some more numbers. 2 - Denard Span's uniform number. Someone else may well be wearing the number next year.* 6-2 - The height of both Aaron Hicks and Josh Willingham, both of whom could be patrolling the outfield for the Twins next year. Some are suggesting Willingham will be traded; I think that would be a PR nightmare. Furthermore, I don't see how the Twins can keep Hicks out of the major leagues next year. 3 - The number of starting pitchers the team says it's looking for this offseason. The Twins will be fortunate if they get two top-of-the-rotation types this offseason.* 30 - The number of homeruns Justin Morneau hit in 2009, the last season he was in the Metrodome. *Target Field has not been as kind to Morneau as it has to Willingham – but then Willingham is a righty, and Morneau a lefty. But that doesn't mean Morneau couldn't return to that form – in 81 games in 2010, he hit 18 home runs, one short of what he did in 2012 in 134 games.* Just goes to show - some numbers are worth remembering.
  4. Dear Seth:

Read your story on the Twins' week in the minor leagues. I watched Nate Roberts in the AFL Championship (on TV). One thing that struck me is his speed – he easily went from first to third on a single. *This guy is certainly aggressive – which may be part of the reason he lead AFL players in hitting. I know he's probably slated for AA this year, but I hope they invite him to spring training.*

I also know the Twins have a lot of good outfielders ahead of him. Maybe we could trade him for pitching??

  5. What's all this talk about trading Willingham? Willingham had 35 home runs this year – more than anyone else in a Twins uniform not named Killebrew. Why would they trade Willingham? I would only consider trading Willingham for a 20-game winner. Otherwise it's not worth the loss of offense and the PR nightmare. Don't even think about trading him for less than a 20-game winner. Yes we need two SP and TWO middle infielders who can actually hit, oh, and FIELD.* Span should bring a competent middle infielder. All others need to come via free agency. We can't gut the rest of our offense to get pitching.
  6. Yes, the team needs pitching, particularly starting pitching. Beyond Scott Diamond, I would be willing to trade all other starters who have played this year – get two strong arms and some for the future. Whether we sign pitchers as free agents, or trade for them, we need starting pitchers. But we also need middle infielders who can actually hit the ball. I like Brian Dozier, but Nishioka should be released immediately; and Casilla should be traded. Keep Carroll as utility infielder and find someone else who can play a very good second base, and still hit the ball. Starters and 2B. Those are our needs this offseason. Fielding a championship team won't happen unless we get both.
  7. It doesn't scare me that the Twins are offering Span, Perkins, Liriano, or even Morneau. *I hope we can get some really good prospects for one or two of them. Of those four, Perkins may actually garner the most in trade, but would leave the Twins without a decent late-inning reliever, other than Burton. But don't trade Willingham. He's the best left fielder they've had for a long, long time. He's built for Target field, and he's not costing an arm and a leg. Keep Willingham.
  8. I am not one to trade an established player like Willingham or Span, without getting at least TWO prospects in return. One is not enough. You're trading someone who is nearly at the high point of their career for someone who hasn't gotten to the big show yet. Two prospects help increase the odds that at least one coming in return will make it to the majors.* As for Hamilton, obviously he needs seasoning at SS, with 24 errors. Either he must spend more time in the minors honing his defense, or be switched to a different position.
  9. Doumit should have been SAFE... and would have subsequently scored. His foot was on the bag before he was tagged. Look again at the replay!!! It should now be 6-5 with one out!!!
  10. What does it mean when the Twins' player with the highest batting average after play on Thursday is... Drew Butera, at .350. He had three hits in four AB. That gives him seven hits in 20 AB. Go Drew!!!
  11. So when Morneau comes off the DL, and is able to play 1B will Parmalee get the regular 3B job? To me, it makes the most sense.*
  12. Twins Manager Ron Gardenhire needs to put Josh Willingham at clean-up. This would: • Put Willingham between Mauer and Morneau. • That would protect Willingham better, as he is the hottest Twin right now. • It would separate the team's two best left-handed batters with a strong right-handed batter. • It would make it harder for opposing teams later in a game to bring in one pitcher to face Mauer and Moneau, and another to face Willingham. • Morneau could then be protected with Valencia, or Doumit or Parmelee. I think this would be the strongest offensive setup for the Twins.

  14. Josh Willingham has had his struggles playing the outfield this year. But there's no doubt he's starting the season fast. Six games. Four homers. Seven RBIs.* IF he were somehow able to keep that pace up for the whole season, he would have 108 homeruns and 189 RBIs.* I believe his defense will improve. He might have to move to right field at Target Field, but Praise the Lord he's hitting the ball hard and well. Keep it up!!!

  16. Mine would be: 1. Span RF 2. Mauer C 3. Morneau DH 4. Willingham LF 5. Valencia 3B 6. Parmalee 1B 7. Hughes 2B 8. Carroll SS 9. Revere CF I think this is the best balance of offense and defense for the Twins, with what they have. I like Mauer 2nd in lineup – good on base and RBI guy. Morneau's hitting the best, so having him third makes sense. If Dozier were here, I would put him in in place of Carroll.
  17. Two losses already. Not a promising start. I don't know why, but there are times when I think the Twins play better against better teams. We can lose to the worst teams and beat the best teams. (Except maybe the Yankees). I hope we can turn the season around, or it will be a long one.
  18. I find it ironic that the Twins have four players listed as 2B who are batting .361 or higher in spring training (including one with only 5 ab), but only one of those (Hughes) is expected to make the roster.
  19. I hope you're right, but I doubt it. No. 1 rule: Never underestimate your opposition.
  20. Don't count the Twins out yet... Yes, you can look at last year and say they lost 99 games. But how much did Mauer play? How much did Morneau play? How much did Span play? M&M appear to be healthier than they have in years. Span is still recovering, but will be an impact player.* Yes, there are problems with the starting rotation. But I believe Twins management will be less likely to put up with ineffective players at any level. Changes are coming, probably in the way of promotions, or waiver picks.* I hope the naysayers on this post go clear up to AL Central management. If they write off the Twins, maybe they'll keep their tougher pitchers and best players for other teams, and the Twins can take advantage. Don't count the Twins out yet. And no, this isn't a "dead team walking."
  21. What I've read about Hollimon is that his injured arm, more than 2 years ago, was surgically repaired. While his arm wasn't good last year, he appears to have gained some strength in it – helping not only his throwing, but his hitting. It's time to take advantage of it.
  22. I also vote for Hollimon. He's just hitting so hot, he deserves a shot. And he can apparently play 2B, SS, and 3B. I still think there's a chance – if Doumit doesn't hit well this spring that the twins would consider him their only backup to Mauer at CA, and would carry another bat north – probably Burroughs. As for RP: I'm comfortable with Burton, Maloney, Manship, or Waldrop in the final three. I think Waldrop might be left in Rochester, but right now, that's a guess.
  23. What are the chances that Michael Hollimon makes the team at SS or 2B? He has been tearing the cover off the ball. But I'm not down there. He's already played (a little) at the ML level. I read one story yesterday where Gardy and TK were working with him defensively at Shortstop in a practice session on another field. So what are his chances? Could we trade Casilla and have Dozier and Hollimon playing regularly?
  24. After today, I'm almost ready to go with: C - Mauer 1B - Parmalee (until Morneau gets his swing back)* 2B - Hollimon – he's batting over .500 and has some punch 3B - Valencia, duh SS - Dozier LF - Revere CF - Span RF - Willingham DH - Doumit – until Morneau gets his swing back. Reserves: Benson, Plouffe, Casilla and Carroll If this group can hit and field the way they have this spring, it should be a very interesting summer.
  25. I agree with most of your assessment. Does Michael Hollimon have a shot as a utility infielder? He's been hitting hard. How is his fielding? Could he make the team instead of Nishioka? The OF and starting pitchers are set. I'm hoping the Twins only carry two catchers, but that sounds more and more unlikely. Towles would be my choice as well, if they carry three. Not sure about Swarzak after yesterday. I was also a big Doyle fan, until yesterday. I hope he can make a comeback. I hope you're right about Burton and Waldrop. Good post.
