I use the pretending to talk on my cell method when I'm walking and see someone approaching in the opposite direction, a good distance away.

They may care, but it's very obvious they lack the "guts" necessary to be competitive at this moment. Last year was clearly an aberration at this point, but they are NOT this bad. They are NOT good, but the talent is farrrrr better than what they've shown. Plus, they are being led by a man who hasn't proven he can manage a game yet.
