  1. Swarzak has been starting in Hendriks place. Pavano, Liriano, Blackburn, Swarzak and Marquis would make five. Waldrop is only on the MLB DL because he was injured, on the 40-man, and hadn't been demoted yet. The minute he's activated, he'll be optioned. Burnett made the team by default, so I would expect him to be optioned. Baker could be moved to the 60-day DL and then there is an open spot on the 40-man. There are a lot of way to make this work, if the Twins were interested in doing so... in my opinion, Thompson is better than Burnett, so it's really an easy choice to make.
  2. Yeah, he's played almost exclusively in LF, with one game in CF. Got some time at 2B in ST and is listed as a 1B on the roster. How about we just go with UTIL?
  3. It appears the first in-season promotion of the year goes to... RockCats OF Darin Mastroianni. Promoted to Rochester. He takes Tosoni's spot on the roster. Tosoni was placed on the 7 day DL with a hand injury.
  4. Yeah, the guy the Twins jumped all over Thursday afternoon. If you can't beat us, join us.
  5. I read about half of the first page before realizing the rest aren't worth my time. I would like to add that, as a white American, I am a little offended when the Twins never shell out big bucks to white Americans during the international signing period. Sense the sarcasm, and let's move on.
  6. I see the Angels just DFA'd RHRP Rich Thompson. I am curious about the possibility of the Twins putting in a waiver claim for three reasons: 1) He was effective in 2011 and could potentially help in the bullpen. 2) The Twins have had a pretty big run of signing guys named "Thompson" in the last six months. 3) The Twins love mates from Down Under. In all seriousness though, do the Twins give Swarzak a shot to keep the 5th spot in the rotation and let Hendriks build his strength back up in AAA? That opens a spot for RHRP, which is already a thin-spot in a bullpen that isn't exactly strong. Thompson is on the hook for $495K and out of options. He could be had for a gamble that isn't even of Zumayan proportions.
  7. I think getting signed early and into camp and back on the field is a huge bonus, but I don't necessarily think we would see a huge difference in the Twins system. Take a guy like Madison Boer, who signed almost immediately after the draft last year. The Twins limited him to 23 games and 25 innings last year out of the bullpen and moved him to the rotation to start this year... at the same level he left off at. Corey Williams, signed at the deadline, pitched at Elizabethton a little to finish last year and is now in Beloit's bullpen. How much would have changed for him had he signed in July instead of August? Would he have gotten a late season promotion to Beloit like Boer did? Would he be in the rotation now? Don't get me wrong - I would much rather have a guy under contract right away and getting acclimated to "the life" ESPECIALLY if he's a position player - but the Twins are going to limit pitchers innings regardless of when they sign. Does signing late hinder their development? That's a good question... Again, I agree with most of what you said Seth, but in your example of Appel, I just don't see that much difference in his developmental path if he signed early or at the deadline. But what do I really know?
  8. I think the signing deadline was moved up to mid-July.
  9. Interesting ESPN Insider piece by Jim Bowden discussing the (lack of) tradability of Justin Morneau. Long story short, he says no GMs would take on Morneau, but come the end of July, the Yanks or Rangers may be interested... For now, I'm just happy 33 hit one on the screws today.
  10. The baseball minds at BA think that Buxton is the consensus #1 talent. They also seem to think the Astros aren't willing to take the risk of drafting a HS at #1. I'm all for taking the BPA, but if the Twins have a pitcher rated close to equal to Buxton, I'd error on the side of adding a pitcher to the stable. If they don't... well, would it be terrible to add the top-rated player on a lot of draft boards?
  11. Keith Law recently updated his Top 50 prospects. He still has Buxton at #1 with Zunino, Appel, Zimmer and Correa rounding out the Top 5. After scrolling through and reading a little about each guy, I found his last couple sentences to be the most interesting to a Twins fan: "If I had to guess right now, I'd say the draft's first four picks go Buxton, Zimmer, Zunino, Appel, but if the Astros decide to pass on Buxton, the Twins could take him and push one of those college arms down to Kansas City at No. 5." I don't put a ton of stock into Keith Law most of the time, but he seems to think the Twins have Zimmer and Buxton as 1 and 1A on their board right now.
  12. I am not 100% sure, but I thought I had read/heard previously that Scott Baker is typically the best-conditioned pitcher the Twins have. May or may not be accurate... so take it for what it's worth.
  13. I would anticipate Goodrum getting a majority of his reps at SS, but there is a lot of feeling that he'll fill out and end up in a corner. Kepler was getting off-season work at 1B. But I would guess that he'll spend most of his time in LF. If the Snappers have a need and Goodrum is the guy to come up, it wouldn't surprise me to see Grimes get a little time in RF where his glove/arm would play better than his bat and open SS up for Goodrum. Sort of the same way the lesser-armed McCallum split his time last year in 2B/LF.
  14. Kepler and Goodrum are the only two OFs on the list with any Appy League experience. So they would probably be the first guys up, but I would guess it would have to be in a role that they would play most games. Drew Leachman - at 23 - might get a chance to be a 4th OF, if needed. I think Goncalves would be first on the chopping block as he's spent the last two seasons going the wrong directions. After watching Lin play in person, I appreciate the value he brings to the team -- versatile OF who did a great job leading off most of last year. He strikes me as an "organizational-type" the Twins like to have around. Granted, how long can you keep those types of players around in Low-A ball?
  15. Lockwood has spent his three seasons in rookie ball, so he'll be with Beloit during the first (or second) round of injuries/promotions/cuts.
  16. Seth, There are a few guys I haven't found a placement for. (I haven't seen New Britain's DL yet, so that might clear up a few things.) Tobias Streich (assuming he'll stay in EST and learn how to pitch) Dallas Gallant (assuming he'll continue rehab in EST) Spencer Steedley (he's spent a lot of time on the NB DL) Ryde Rodriguez (EST to Ft. Myers when ready?) Jhonathan Arias Any idea? All the other guys spent more than half of last year in rookie ball, so I'd assume that's where the rest will be... for now.
  17. Seth, How come Vargas isn't on the roster? Does the suspension clock start even though he'll still be in EST?
  18. Official release from the best baseball team in Wisconsin... (and I can say that, because I'm from Wisconsin...) http://beloit.snappers.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120402&content_id=27847988&vkey=news_t554&fext=.jsp&sid=t554
  19. I started a series of draft previews for the different areas and the Midwest was next on my list. Plawecki was one of only a couple of guys that jumped out. The plan was to complete my post tonight, before I realized it was National Championship Monday. But, yes, I would agree... if you're into following potential Twin-draftees Plawecki is on a short list of guys you could catch on Big Ten Network.
  20. Seth, by TON of players please tell me that you aren't talking about Sano and/or Rosario, a fear I've had since last fall.
  21. Suarez surprises me a little bit. Not so much because of his age, but because he was given a six-figure bonus and was only around for a year. Granted, that may have been all the time they needed to realize that this wasn't a great investment. (Sound familiar?)
  22. Sounds like he's no longer a Twin.
