  1. Chipper is one of the greatest hitting third basemen of all time. No one can disprove that. Based on his counting stats and spending essentially his entire career at the hot corner, he makes it into the Hall easily - hopefully on the first ballot. If you're looking for something to criticize, it's his defense. While I'll stop short of calling him a butcher at 3B, he will certainly not be known as a great glove man. Remember when the Braves moved him to the outfield to make room for Vinny Castilla? He was beyond awful in the outfield, but that shouldn't be help against him as a third baseman. He's obviously had a more difficult time staying on the field in recent years, but with Barry Larkin recently inducted, that seems like a pretty moot point to argue.
  2. I've also heard that Span kicks small puppies and runs a dog fighting ring. Yes, Span missed 92 games in 2011, but he played 153 games in 2010 and 145 in 2009. The last time I checked both of those numbers were considered larger than 80. Note: I might have made up the part about the puppies and dogs, so I could sound as preposterous as Jack.
  3. Thanks for the updates, Thrylos. Please tell me you're not at work!!
  4. Carl Pavano loves playing with his balls when nobody is looking.
  5. Take a minute to read this article. Wow. This does indeed sound like a scary situation. A haphazard job of cleaning up a bone spur in his back could have killed him.
  6. Fred Lynn is correct, but he did it 1983 at Comiskey Park. Amongst the runs scored on Lynn's grand slam were none other than former Twin, Rod Carew.
  7. Not Jim Edmonds. Did you know Tim Salmon had a .385 OBP, 299 home runs, and 128 OPS+ over his 14 year career, and was never an All Star?
  8. What Angels outfielder hit the first grand slam in All Star Game history? Seth and I were doing lunch yesterday, and we both knew the answer to this question. Once this happened, I think we were both kind of weirded out and our game of baseball trivia came to an end. No looking it up on the internet and then posting the answer...
  9. The fact that he'll be 27 in August makes his stats a lot less intriguing. That's just about 3 years older than Ben Revere. He could be AAA roster filler, or he could be a backup for the Twins. It looks like he's pretty good defensively in center field and can at least draw a walk without striking out a ton. Factoring in defense, does he really look like a worse option than Plouffe or Tosoni?
  10. Including his lost 2013 season, he will have thrown 928 1/3 innings over his 10 year career. That's less than 100 innings per season on average. His career high innings total is 189 2/3, which he pulled off in his second season way back in 2004. That means over 20% of his career innings came in 1 season 9 years ago (at the end of 2013). In the other 9 seasons of his career, he will have averaged just 82 innings per season. And somehow he's made more than $23.5 million in his career, averaging over $25,000 and inning. Stats from baseball-reference.com.
  11. Like Seth said, it's a low risk signing. He's right handed, so he presumably handles southpaws well. That's a plus. 1 K in every 7.8 plate appearances also stands out. http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=colabe001chr
  12. I've got no problem with the Love suspension. You don't do that. There is a chance it was an accident, but I'm not buying it. I do like that Love went to apologize after the game. The NBA had better at least issue a "Stern" (Ha!) warning to Scola about throwing basketballs at people's junk. That looked a bit suspect, too.
  13. There have been a number of Justin Morneau related articles lately outlining his health maladies and his ongoing recovery from post concussion syndrome. How has reading these articles affected your outlook on Morneau's 2012 season and his career? Please refrain from posting any of the "Morneau is faking it" types of comments.
