I realize I can't win any arguments in these forums or even change anyone's mind for that matter. Thanks for being passionate about Twins baseball.

I think I've had this argument with you before so I am not going to have it again. Looking at your signature quote you have your mind made up. I'm sorry you feel that way. By the way, Theo's degree is in American Studies.

20 years in baseball ops doesn't count? Theo started in media relations. Jeff Lunhow was a consultant. AJ Preller who started as intern in the Phillies ticket office. Most people don't just get a job in baseball ops out of the shoot. There are not a lot of jobs available.

That's quite an involved process, one that might be extremely difficult to explain here. Depending on the risk of acquisition you usually have analytics, scouting, medical, and makeup/background all play a role. If Brad Steil needs a minor league free agent utility infielder at 2A we don't do as much "work" on him as when signing a Major League agent or extending a player to a long-term contract. Terry has to take in all that info and make a decision. Then we make an offer we feel ok making based on our scouting reports, internal projections, and how our medical staff feels a player will hold up over the course of contract. Then the player has to agree. There are times we make an offer and another team blows us out of the water either with dollars, years, or both. It's not as black and white and some may make it. Some years a player you didn't expect to be available right before Spring Training is available and you get him.

That would take the fun out of it. Then you would know when I was being sarcastic and when I was not being sarcastic. And sometimes, on this site, it is WAY more entertaining for people to question that and stir the pot even more.

We have added some new metrics to our pitching dashboard since this interview was conducted 6 years ago. It's our version of WHIP. (Wins + Hits)/Innings Pitched. ***this is getting to be a little like David Ortiz.

I switched full-time in 2011. I had been working on various projects for 3 years maybe before that. Maybe two. The Phillies, Marlins, Tigers for sure didn't have someone at that time. Joe Sheehan had just started with the Blue Jays. I think teams like the Rangers and Braves had a person or two working on things but nobody focused on analytics. I think around 2010 or 2011 was around the time that teams not named the Rays, Pirates, or Cardinals started to understand they needed to do something in this area. There are other areas analytics can make an impact besides the field. gardy in the end started to realize that and having Paul and his staff has definitely helped in areas. Jos Vavra started implementing shifts, Paul expanded it, and Gene Glynn has done even more. Just knowing where we were when I started up until now, the changes have been pretty good.

Mike, that interview was done during Spring Training of 2010 I believe. I understand that was a first impression and for many fans that is what sticks in their mind. Rob admits that wasn't one his finest hours and knows that has contributed to our image.

I think a lot of relievers follow this same pattern. The manager and pitching coaches confidence level in the pitcher will dictate how long the leash is. Also, who is not available that day, etc..

No, it means a guy who is walking 3.0 per 9 or so is walking a guy between every third and fifth game. Not as concerning in the 7th. As you said though, a guy who strikes out a lot of hitters can take care of the extra base runners themselves so it isn't as much of a concern. We do take into account everything with relievers. K's, BB's, pitch types, Statcast info, actual vs. expected numbers.

A couple of things. Then why state as fact we are 10-15 years behind the industry? Oakland didn't have an analytics department in the '90's. Nobody did. Boston didn't form an analytics department until the last few years. Their front office members and scouts were supposed to be up to date. They had a couple of guys in the office working on projects. Terry is always going to speak like a scout. That is who is he is at his core. Their is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Now he is a decision maker so he depends on our department to provide him info. Unfortunately the ESPN article was a disappointment. Ben cherry picked a quote by Terry right after he came back as GM and then picked a quote from Gardy who was no longer our manager. He didn't talk with Paul. I would hope we come out better in the 2016 analytics issue.

Thanks Shane. I would say it's more than promising. We believe it is going very well. A group of us have spent a lot of time planning out the most effective uses for the video and creating a thorough program. I thought our Spring Training video crew did an excellent job this year, capturing a lot of Major League and Minor League video for various numbers of instructional purposes.

Jamming change down peoples' throats usually doesn't work too well. So we started in 3A and 2A for a reason - to get players who were closer to the big leagues familiar with the same video system they would be using upon their arrival in Minnesota. After our Minor League coordinators and coaching staff saw the benefits at those levels we expanded the program. Responsible pace means we made sure people who were going to be affected by the change in video operations were aware of how the tool could be used and could benefit them. Once a group likes what is going on with the program it becomes easier to implement in other affiliates because they are familiar with it. If we tried to change the way we did video at four affiliates at once and it was disorganized or bombed, people were not going to use it. We needed to create buy in from players and more importantly coaches and coordinators. So we concentrated our efforts in two spots. We didn't do Cedar Rapids last season because we knew we were going to have a brand new video room in Ft. Myers for 2015 and wouldn't need the thousands of dollars in equipment there this season. We still had video in CR just not on the same program.

You are correct here. We introduced the more formal video program in 3A and 2A a few years ago. We expanded it to Ft. Myers last season. With the completion of two state-of-the-art video rooms on the Minor League side and inside the stadium in FL we expanded the intern program this year to Cedar Rapids. We have approximately 5 interns and a full-time guy. We showed our coaches and other staff how the program would work and expanded it at a responsible pace.

Not late. We have used video for about 7 years now. We have just formalized the process like Seth mentioned over the past 3 or 4 years. There are teams that have cut their minor league video programs and teams that only use it at their two highest levels. What advanced stats do you think are valuable in the Midwest League?

No offense to Parker but this is why we have a pitching coach and hitting coach at each level. To help hitters hit and help pitchers pitch.
