  1. Gibson, yes. Meyer, almost a zero chance of being in the rotation this July. I think you're wrong. I understand your thinking, and mostly I'm going on a hunch, but I think he will arrive similar to Matt Garza in 2006. Meyer will be 23 in January. Liam Hendricks was 23 last year. This team does not have a lot of pitching. Zero chance? No.
  2. It's just really doubtful That the twins are going to give out a Gil Meche like contract in order to attract one of the in-demand pitchers on the market. Therefore those pitchers will go to other teams that will easily match the twins offer and won't be as glaringly lined up for a losing season. It means the pitchers that will have an incentive to sign with the twins are the ones who were kicked out of a rotation at some point within the last year because they have the incentive to sign somewhere without stiff competition for a rotation spot so they will be assured of being starters. So that means you're looking at Correia, Liriano, Jurrgens, and Lannan. I think Meyer and Gibson will be in the rotation by July anyway and that Terry Ryan has no problem with that. So he won't mind signing someone from who he may only see a half season's worth of use, he has never minded doing that anyway with both position players and picthers.
  3. Saunders has a major league track record that includes durability and pitching innings for full seasons over the course of several seasons. There is currently no one in the organization who can have that said about them. So why would someone complain about signing him?
  4. Very true, and not a bad way of looking at things, he should be trying to build for that year. I think the kid out of Indiana State is more interesting than Appel. I personally hope that Hendricks is lined up as the 6th starter come 2014 and Salcedo has established himself as a viable option for the rotation over him. But I do think it is definitely true that TR has an eye towards drafting a college pitcher with real potential to be in the 2014 rotation by mid-year. That is a factor in this offseason.
  5. In the Twins situation of currently not being a contender and therefore not being an attractive landing spot, I would go as high as the deal Haren just got from the Nats - 1 year $13 million. However, I would NOT go over one year.
  6. Some people probably understand that they'll get no response to a reply in a thread already exceeding 20 messages, while they may get 3 or 4 if they start a thread themselves. We may wish human nature were different... Yes! I would say that the number of Liriano threads in this message board warrants a discussion on ontology for sure.
  7. I totally disagree with John's take on how the BJ Upton signing influenced this deal. I think he has it backwards. Once the Nationals had lost out on Upton, and the FA centerfield market was set higher than they wanted to get into (especially since they are planning to sign a starting pitcher) they decided to pull the trigger on a deal giving up their best pitching prospect - which they would have rather not done. Do you think they would have given up AJ Cole for Span in the summer of 2011? No way, and the 6'9 fireballer is no small pill for them to swallow now. One of Terry Ryan's skills as a GM is that he is stubborn, he is not afraid to NOT make a deal if he has any leverage at all. The Twins have been turning down offers of lesser players for Span for almost two years now and it has paid off. The Reds really wanted Span in July, but Ryan was insistent on getting Cingrani from them and would not budge from it. So a deal didn't happen, he waited, and now he got the kind of return he was looking for after the CF market was set with the Upton signing. It was the Nationals who got more urgent, not TR.
  8. I was there with my now-wife for Span's first career home run, a rocket off of Mark Buerhle that I believe went into the press box. No one saw it coming and he just go ahold of one. He was a class act the whole way in my opinion and I hope he does awesome with the Nats. Love that triple against the chi sox in '08 also. Seth, please tell me, is Meyer better to have than Randall Delgado? Thanks.
  9. I really want to know if Meyer's potential eclipse's Delgado's. Since they were going to trade him for half a season of Dempster I figured the Twins could have gotten him for Span, could be wrong. Certainly this time last year Delgado would have been more highly touted. I sure like the way Meyer's stuff reads. He turned down $2 million from the Red Sox to go to Kentucky in 2008. He's a Scott Boras client. I think this guy will overcome any concerns. There's been plenty of tall pitchers who thrived.
  10. It all seems to point towards the wise move being an all out youth movement and trading Span, Morneau, and Willingham, and even Mauer, for the best minor league pitchers they can get that will still be under team control when the Sano/Buxton/Berrios/Rosario era begins.
  11. Enough crying over spilled milk. Whats done is done.Get over it. I'm over it…also not crying - geez man chill out https://www.google.com/search?q=uptight+definition&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&client=safari
  12. And this will be the third time he will be playing opening day in Minnesota as a visitor (2008 also). (Sigh) They should have re-signed Torii and kept Garza. His signing with Detroit almost makes me want to cheer for them over the Twins. Because…I look at the Twins, and there is no individual on the team that I want to win a World Series more than I want it for Torii. But alas, I love that laundry that they wear.
  13. I'm predicting what no one else seems to be: the Twins will sign Kevin Correia to a two year deal with a team option for a third…
  14. Looks a lot like BJ Upton in his batting practice swing. I'm excited about both him and Berrios. Along with Sano and Rosario they form a good core of players at the low levels and there are others also. It lends a lot of support to the notion that the Twins should be aiming to build a contender for two or three years out. No wonder that Seth Stohls is one such advocate of the Twins taking that approach right now, he knows their minors as good as anyone who writes about it.
  15. The NL may be more pitcher-friendly but Wrigley field is not gonna jive too well with his fly ball tendencies.
  16. Couldn't agree more with this post. I'd say its a little silly, uptight even, to not view the word "hate" here as being relative to the non-serious context it appears in.
  17. There is nothing wrong with you have said here and indeed may be the exact disposition that decent human instinct leads one to on KLaw.
  18. Am I the only one who sees the signing of Kevin Correia as a given? This guy has got Twins written all over him - he wants to go somewhere that he'll know he will start, heh.
  19. No it was his awkward exchanges with the lucky lotto winner fans in the stands and his all too frequent uninvited references to Bert about inside jokes that clearly had to do with drinking. He wasn't bad interviewing the players or anything, but he doesn't belong in a Midwest market.
  20. Yes!! Yes!! Yes!! The first great news of the offseason. He belongs in the east coast, clearly did not have the appropriate sensibilities to deal with Minnesotan fans, all too awkward. Hopefully this means a lot more Maurney Gelner.
  21. If only Baltimore played there!
  22. That deal fell apart. He's a free agent http://m.espn.go.com/mlb/story?storyId=8584934
  23. I'd say I agree on all counts, except that I would spend money to bring in Jeremy Affeldt. He can get righties and lefties out and is proven and he would be late-inning insurance in case Burton's injury problems recurr and Fein can't repeat his performance. I think TR will likely not spend big on any free agent pitcher but will get two guys at a $4-6 million per year range for 2-3 years, like Correia and Iwakuma, giving a similar contract to Affeldt would be a good move also. Then trade Morneau and/or Span if you can get a good starter for them.
  24. Probably the biggest reason why Morneau would not get traded. They might be thinking that essentially putting Parmelee in the lineup for Span may help improve this.
