  1. Did we just replace Tyler Robertson?
  2. I wonder how many teeth-gnashing posts will result from this?
  3. A team can't have too many no-stick Catchers! Project him to be a starter (25%)-both Buteras started so not unreal.
  4. Gosh reading so many threads about Eades remarking that he doesn't throw 95 and K 10 per game--really did people really think those guys exist at #43? Baker was a 2nd rounder at was at least serviceable until he got injured.
  5. Why would the Twins offer above slot? It would take Stewart at least three years before he can be drafted and there isn't enough monetary difference between #4 money and higher slots to take the risk of falling to a lower slot.
  6. Let's see if the Twins keep drafting pitchers and take 7 of the first ten selections as they said they would. Hopefully, they take 5 LHP!
  7. Sid Hartman wrote an article in the Strib today claiming that the Twins' problems were caused by poor drafts from '02-'09. Normally Sid is one of the biggest defenders of the Twins (and other local teams) so I was quite surprised to read this column under his byline. My reading between the lines caused me to conclude that there was a fundamental change after '09 and that it was caused by a new philosophy from the Pohlads, eg Carl's death and his sons taking command--they opened the purse strings for amateur player acquisition.
  8. My interpretation from a LEN article in today's Strib was that the Twins want to avoid Boras--even if it means passing on an elite player. "Boras trying to 'break' the draft"? If so, clearly MLB would act to break Boras--invoking the "for the good of the game" defense.
  9. So what? My Q: was there "an agreement" to take Boras down a notch? Obviously someone had to draft him "high". Recall when Buxton was selected, the Twins were "rich" in OFers. Both Span and Revere were well respected, Hicks was expected to be better than both of them, and there was "depth" for the OF bench. The rotation was known to be worse than anyone else and required " a frame-off rebuild". Appel was fully expected to be at the ML level in 1.5 years (from 6/12), and Buxton would "need some years to develop". Ok, roll the dice on Buxton, it might work--but there is still are gigantic holes in the rotation. Conspiracy theory? No, I really think Ryan expects to skimp on pitching, hoping that inexpensive sinker-slider types (Silva) can function as mainstays and devote the bulk of the salaries to "toolsy" position players to provide an entertaining (and lower cost) team. the 2000's have shown that playoff wins will be scarce, and the World Series will have someone else. Surprisingly, two top SPs with simply a decent hitting/fielding team can actually win in the playoffs against the huge-payroll teams. But maybe Buxton will be the next Willie Mays--I sure hope so.
  10. I'm sorry if I p'd in your Kool-Aid. I hope Buxton does succeed as much as anyone. Buxton was all of $200K underslot--not even close to the allowable 5% "overage" a team may have, so it didn't "sign anybody" that wouldn't have been signed without that extra $200K. The value of premier starting pitching is not to be scoffed-at. Several ordinary hitting teams have won World Series with premier starting pitching.
  11. They had their chance at him--and passed. Consider if The Twins did draft him last year at #2. Revere probably doesn't get traded, so no Worley or May. Hicks is likely tearing-up AAA pitching (completely unaware that a river of cold water awaits in Minneapolis). Given the tone of the posts asking for Gibson to be promoted--multiply that by 10 for Appel's promotion. The Twins would still be selecting 4th Thursday--but with more options in their direction. Assume that the "Big 2" are taken, as well as Kohl Stewart. They could go college pitcher (guy from Nevada), HS pitcher (Bell), HS "toolsy" OF, Moran (3B), or under-slot and hope to draft some HS pitchers would are 2nd-4th round choices now, but "overpay" to loadup on pitching (with an eye towards trading Appel before free agency--yet having the pitching at advanced levels). All very interesting. True, Appel might have refused #2 money (I really doubt that!) and the Twins select 4th and 5th. That's the worst case scenario--and it's an unlikely one at that. Instead, we earnestly hope that Buxton becomes the next Kirby Puckett, but with lots of speed (though not as much charisma).
  12. Time will be needed to clean-up the mess and we do need to be somewhat patient. There also needs to be a committment from ownership--at all levels. But to be blunt, Ryan did not walk into this situation as an outsider, he helped create the mess.
  13. Zero chance Appel will be available when the Twins select.
  14. ...and I thought this was a thread about Clete Thomas and Tyler Robertson... Posters have been complaining about the lack of an alternate CF since Mastroianni's injury--and by golly two months later Ryan brought one to the Twins--and it was someone who was actually successful at Rochester! Will he be a useful addition to the Twins?--Probably not. But I think Thomas was the most successful CF in the organization this season who was at a level consistent with promotion to the Twins. This promotion does make a statement to minor leaguers to "keep working, follow instructions, and play well--and you might get promoted"! So, for all of you complaining about a lack of an alternate to Hicks for the Twins--here he is--you may stop complaining.
  15. College students/athletes taking drugs? Wow--earhshattering. You are aware ths stuff is routinely given to school kids in special Ed? Performance enhancing? Guys will darn near do anything to keep-up-with-the-Jones.
  16. Another member of the vaunted Class of '06 has been DFA'd--Tyler Robertson.
  17. Will Thomas be added to the Active Roster also? If so, will there be a corresponding move from New Britain to Rochester (and who?).
  18. Did anyone expect Gardy to be candid and accurate? Example: "Correira pitched a darn good game for us through six, but I 'screwed-up' and left him in for the 7th".
  19. So what is your point (which apparently only includes the ALC)? That all teams draft poorly but the Twins were dead last because they won't sign a decent free agent? Or, the Twins are just plain unlucky? The minor league affliates (exception Elizabethon) have been losing too--just more bad luck? or is it the Twins employ a poor strategy of baseball which compels them to be consistent losers? There hasn't been a wholesale change in personnel so we can't point fingers and say "it was those guys." Some teams are winning--even at the minor league level (without benefit of free agents). We can't claim because of "promoted talent"--because we have all seen the failures of the promotions from Rochester. So what else is there--besides poor drafting?
  20. Or maybe it just says the Twins are poor at drafting. Combine this thread with the previous one(s) on why the Twins shouldn't use free agents to build a team.
  21. When has that ever happened? These polls make for a nice discussion, but there is a "consensus top three"--and Minnesota selects 4th (Hasn't this happened mnay times over the years?). If one of the three "falls"--you take him--no questions asked! That being the case I would be more than surprised if that happened. Both Houston and Chicago are "high revenue" franchises and don't need to "save money". Two years (three seems certain, four inevitable) of selecting very early and a strong system should have been built. They (H&C) clearly can open the checkbook to buy talent to serve as cornerstones. Colorado, can't--so they must take a "high probability" guy. The Twins need to correct their biggest deficiencies--starting pitching and HR hitting. Anything else would be foolish.
  22. Appel would have been both "need" and BPA in 2012. The selection of Buxton had to include other factors in the decision--but the Twins provided no comment to justify their choice. As far as this thread "need" vs BPA--the Twins "need" impact players at all positions. Consider the lack of power on the active roster (for years) as well as in starting pitching. There really is no "wrong" position to draft, only "wrong" or "right" players.
  23. Hicks did not "go on his own". It might have been a R&H with the batter missing the sign. I think that pitcher employs a slide-step. But to me, up 3 with the opponents having questionable pitching--the steal is foolish. Play patiently and wait for BBIP, the inning was built and now it's time to see if there will be a hit parade to bury the Brewers with an avalache of runs.
  24. For those are so very enthusiastic about that lineup, exchanging Buxton for Appel makes for a stronger team in the playoffs. Methinks that Ryan's selection of Buxton over Appel had one or two (unnamed) factors in the decision rubric. I think Ryan will use this same rubric this year.
  25. I picked Bryant too--but I don't claim he's the BPA.
