  1. I like the trade, but it seems that the Twins are still short about three pitchers for the starting rotation. I assume the Twins will be in the market for a decent Free Agent and a 3rd tier type but the names we hear in rumors are scary. Liriano and Pavano? Say it ain’t so! I am now beginning to wonder if Terry Ryan might be planning another trade and dump most of Morneau’s salary this season for a starter. That would mean Parmelee would play 1st and one of the two guys (Oswaldo Arcia and Aaron Hicks) that are expected to see major league action this year would earn a starting role in the outfield. Looks like next week will be interesting!
  2. Whoa, I have been so focused on staring pitching, or the need of help with the starting rotation, that I haven’t considered the “hole” with the position players. The Twins have several position prospects that will either be starting in 2014 or 15. The outfield has Ben Revere, Aaron Hicks and Oswaldo Arcia, not to mention Byron Buxton will not be far behind and he seems to have a much higher upside. In the infield, with Eddie Rosario at 2nd, Miguel Sano at 3rd and Chris Parmelee at 1st, it looked like the infield was developing into a decent group…but then the reality post you gave us this morning. The starting rotation still stands out as the greatest need for the organization. Scott Diamond and Kyle Gibson might establish themselves as part of the Twins future team, but other minor leaguers (Liam Hendriks, Alex Wimmers, B.J. Hermsen and Hudson Boyd) can only be listed as questionable starting potential and the reason the organization needs more long-term answers for the rotation. Now I have to start worrying about a short-stop for the Twins to be a solid contending team in a couple years.
  3. With so little happening now and doubtful prior to the Winter Meetings, I have been considering putting together a blue print. After all, other than having Baker sign with the Cubbies, very little has transpired. The only thing that prevented me from putting together my list was my indecision between trading Span or Morneau, while I like both of them the Twins are in desperate need of starters. I have been leaning towards trading Span for weeks now, but it simply boils down to who replaces the trade (Span or Morneau) and both position players would most likely be replaced with Parmelee and his natural position would be first base. With only one year remaining on Morneau’s contract he seems to be more expendable. Keeping Span would allow more time for the outfielders who are knocking on the door to develop. So trade for a young pitching prospect, even if the Twins need to cover some of the contract. Sign a couple of free agents (Anibal Sanchez and Carlos Villanova) and let the young minor leaguers develop into starters for 2014 and 2015.
  4. Great article Seth, I find my opinion shifting to the long-term approach and going after prospects and younger players rather than trying to be "somewhat" competitive in the short-run.
  5. Damn!...I was hoping he might come back with the Twins, even though he was returning from Tommy John. I agree with the Twins that $5.5 million was too much.
  6. One or two new starters aside, the starting rotation maystill need a good bullpen to back them up. If Bakers is resigned, he will be returning with pitch count or inning limitations doe to his rehab. The same goes for Gibson if he makes the big leagues at the beginning of the year ormid-season. The rotation will still need one of the players from the 2012auditions; Hendriks, Deduno, or (dare I say it…Blackburn), any of these candidates are still “projects” and could easily give way in the early innings for bullpen support. Guess I understand where Ryan is coming from.
  7. Kyle Gibson-SP and Aaron Hicks-OF are no-brainers, but with some room to spare (for now) I would include at least five more prospects. My list includes Adrian Salcedo-SP (who looked good a year ago, but a lousy year…could be due to elbow and shoulder injuries), Michael Tonkin-SP (Twins need pitching prospects, especially one that throws in the mid-90s), Bruce Pugh-RHP (seems like a good bullpen prospect), and David Bromberg-SP (yet another pitcher who is trying to come back from injuries). I would like to include Danny Santana- SS (even with Levi Michael ahead of in on the depth chart, he seems to have some hitting potential) on my list, however since pitching prospects are the most important, I would include BJ Hermsen- SP, the Iowa kid that was Twins minor league pitcher of the year in 2012. Kyle Gibson Aaron Hicks Adrian Salcedo Michael Tonkin Bruce Pugh David Bromberg BJ Hermsen
  8. I realize that Ryan relies on his generalize and cover-all-the bases type of response to all questions, like “there are a lot of starters we need to look at” or “we need to make sure we put the right people in the right place”, but I too would be interested in more specifics. The biggest question I have is about multi-year contracts for a starting pitcher. Given the reluctance to for a three of four-year contract in the past, does anything change with the Morneau contract going off the books in 2014? Regardless of whether Morneau is traded during the off-season or during the season, there seems little reason to resign him for 2014, which leaves $14 million available that could be part of a SP multi-year deal.

  11. Limiting innings the following year after TJ seems appropriate and in the long-term best interest of Gibson (and the team if his stuff is as good as the reports). Rather than sit him down in September, like Washington did to Strassburg, why not have him sit out a month in the spring. After all, he is pitching Fall League.
  12. The biggest problem is that the Twins gave up Wilson Ramos to Washington for reliever Matt Capps in 2010. Don’t see Drew Butera as a legitimate replacement as catcher and Chris Herrmann probably isn't the guy either.
  13. The problem is that Liriano has broken our collective hearts too many times. While we remember his terrific first year (pre-TJ Surgery) there isn’t a lot to brag about after his return. He probably won’t have a lot of options because he didn’t impress many in Chicago, so his price might be right. Maybe give him a low contract that is incentive laden and move him quickly to the bullpen if he stinks it up.
