Article: Twins Draft Preview: Kyle Tucker
Bob Sacamento replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Clark is considered at Top 10-15 talent, so drafting him at #7 wouldn't be a big stretch bargain. The slot value at #6 is ~3.9M, there has been alot of talk of him going #12 to the Marlins which is a ~3M slot so maybe get Clark at 3.5M thus saving 400K. You can then use that 400K and give pick #73 1.2M which is the money for early second round (pick 47) which is where their second round pick would have been. Just a thought. Food for thought, the Cubs took Kyle Schwarber at #4 who was considered a late first round talent (mid at best), he signed for 3.1M (which was #9 pick money), slot was 4.6M, the Cubs used the 1.5M on several young HS pitchers who were considered unsignable late in the draft. Last year's #6 pick Alex Jackson a highly touted HS talent signed for 4.2M which was .7M over slot money. Slot was 3.5M, this is what I can see Cameron and Boras try to do. Then there is always the draft a senior college player high for ~50-100K and using that saving for another pick as well. Hate to say it but the signing of Ervin Santana looks worse and worse as it cost the Twins not only their second round pick but also that slot money ~1.3M. Below is the Twins' total slot money and per pick slot money. Twins ($7,388,700) No. Round Slot value 6 1 3,889,500 73 B 839,700 80 3 754,000 110 4 517,900 140 5 387,700 170 6 290,300 200 7 217,400 230 8 175,400 260 9 163,800 290 10 153,000 -

The whole bloodline thing gives Cameron the nod plus he still has physical projectability while Clark is considered finished in that department. -

Article: Twins Draft Preview: Alex Bregman
Bob Sacamento replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The 2015 draft is shaping up to be the worst since 2000 with quite a few injuried college arms, little HS pitching talent, and HS offensive bats are few and far between. The only strong suit of the draft is an average crop of offensive college bats. The closer and closer to the draft we get, the more and more likely Bregman is going to be gone before the Twins selection. -
Article: What Can We Expect From the #6 Pick
Bob Sacamento replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Despite Ryan being one of the last few old school GM's still left in the game (a disiciple of Andy MacPhail), Terry Ryan has hit on quite a few first rounders with the philosophy of drafting the most athletic guy - (Cuddyer, Mauer, Span, Plouffe, Perkins, Garza, Revere), with the jury still out on Buxton, Berrios, Kohl Stewart, and Nick Gordon. The following first picks for Minnesota were during Terry Ryan's sabbatical - Hicks, Gutieriez, Hunter, Gibson, Bashore, Wimmers, Michael, Harrison and Boyd. While watching the Perfect Game East Coast showcase with Terry Ryan last weekend it was obvious that he loves the extremely athletic players. I know many "insiders" pooh-pooh it but Daz Cameron seems like a really good fit even with the rumor of a well above slot bonus. My guess is that he signs for slot as he doesn't prefer to go to college as long as it's Top 10 money even with him wanting top 5 money. In the past, I've advocated Vandy starting pitcher Walker Buehler here as he has the weapons and pitchability plus signing at slot, outside of his forearm strain early on he's been solid. While his rotation mate Carson Fulmer looks wicked at times but also is a projected reliever due to his mechanics/delivery because it's full effort and not ideal.- 17 replies

Nice to see Tapia (Sano's said to keep an eye on him) and Velez get into some real game action. I just saw these two throw in extended spring ball over the weekend and they were definately the most impressive arms at the time.

Well I was at extended spring training games this weekend, watching the Red Sox take on the Twins. On Friday, I was too wrapped up talking to Red Sox prospect Yoan Moncada's agent Dennis Hastings, so I didn't get to see too much of the game other than a few big swings by Lewin Diaz and Roberto Gonzalez, along with Sam Gibbons looking good for two innings to start the game. BoSox phenom Yoan Moncada didn't play on Friday but played SS for the first two innings on Saturday before coming out of the game and coaching first. This kid is built like a body builder, runs like a sprinter, and hits like batting champion; definitely someone to watch out for in the future. Saturday though, I did watch both games at the Centurylink Complex, spending more time watching Game 1 which featured Keton Steele who looked good in two innings of work with a fastball between 91-93 mph and only a few offspeed offerings of slider and changeup. His fastball has good life to it while his slider was decent. The Twins lineup in Game 1 featured Jarrard Poteete behind the plate, Nelson Molina at 1B, Manuel Guzman at 2B, Blake Schmit at SS, Rafael Valera at 3B, Roberto Gonzalez in RF, Austin Diemer in CF, and Dubal Baez in LF. Gonzalez was impressive in the outfield, covering large ground and showing off a cannon of an arm. At the plate he's still working his way back, he struck out looking, grounded into a double play (started by Moncada at SS), and flied out to center. Taking over for Steele was Brandon Poulson, I'd heard stories of him hitting 100 mph in the past well on this day he was between 91-93 mph in his first inning and 89-91 mph in his second inning of work. The movement and life to his fastball was nearly non-existent while his slider was erratic; sometimes looking sharp and dangerous at 84-86 mph then other times batting practice at 79-81 with no break. In his two innings, he threw two wild pitches that led to a run scoring. Taking over for Poulson was Alexis Tapia and he looked great compared to the rest. Miguel Sano told me in Spring Training to keep an eye out for Tapia this year and now I know why, His fastball sat between 92-94 mph with a hard sharp slider at 80-85 mph. The kid looked good and held his velocity To round out Game 1, Aussie Josh Guyer took the mound for an inning hitting 90-92 mph with his fastball and lefty Jose Velez who is a max effort thrower hitting 90-92 mph as well. On Game 2 where the Twins took on the soon to be Lowell Spinners, meaning most of these guys were going to be going to short season affiliate ball when it starts up. Derek Rodriguez was on the mound and shows off a very live fastball with sink that was between 91-93 mph, his slider is still a work in progress breaking off a couple good offerings. Dereck still needs to work on his control and mechanics but the ability is definitely there to be a mid-late inning reliever. Luis Hernandez followed him up along with a good outing by Johan Quezada who showed a fastball between 92-94 mph and had his slider working. Netherland's Ruar Verkerk nearly went yard hitting a double off the left centerfield fence. While Lewin Diaz is a man amongst boys, he looks like a slightly smaller version of Kennys Vargas, he's currently playing LF and getting some reps at 1B which is likely his future home. I'll be back next weekend when they take each other on again.

Great guy to have in an organization, his best case scenerio is that of a mid-late inning reliever, nothing sexy but always good to churn out your own relievers. He just gets over looked by the high velocity arms ahead of him Nick Burdi, Jake Reed, JT Chargois, Zach Jones, Dallas Gallant, etc...

Peterson doesn't much love at all and never did in college either, and it's a combination of things; he was a 13th rounder, he's not imposing physically or on the mound but you CAN NOT argue his results. In his brief MiLB stint he's averaging 13.3 K/IP, 2.9 BB/IP, 6.2 H/IP and closed at Witchita State (40IP, 1.12 ERA, 9.45 K/IP, 3.4 BB/IP, 6.1 H/IP) with his two plus pitches. The two occasions I saw him pitch this spring, he was throwing a 91-93 mph fastball, I think I saw him hit 96 once. His mechanics and delivery look good, real good, he doesn't max effort it like Burdi or Chargois but gets great results thus far with a swing and miss slider and locating a moving fastball. Peterson isn't a sexy prospect but he does appear to have what it takes to make it as a mid/late inning reliever as he has the ability to go more than an inning. I'll believe it more though the further he climbs the ladder, if he keeps it up he'll be pushing a callup to the crowded AA pen.

Article: 2015 Ft. Myers Miracle Roster Preview
Bob Sacamento replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Hu might be a year older but he also has the whole assimilation issue to contend with but from speaking to his host family here he's loving it here and picking up the lifestyle quickly. Kid knows how to pitch and keeps his composure even after he was hit around early in his start before settling down.- 19 replies

Let's not forgot Kepler was in right and batting cleanup. Also worth note, look out for this Brandon Peterson kid continues to baffle hitters overmatching the Crabs striking out 5 in 2 innings. The Miracle have drawn the short straw this week drawing MLB rehabbers Drew Smyly and Jesus Colome to start two of the three games.

Article: Where Will Miguel Sano Play?
Bob Sacamento replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's nothing serious, mild sprain/strain, hyperextension, says he'll be ready for Opening Day on Thursday. The organization is using it as time to work on his conditioning and AA Strength and conditioning coach Dax Fiore is riding him hard! -

I was there taking pictures and video today and he had a teammate drink the formula and spit it the **** out. He said he's been doing it the past 2 days and has lost 10 pounds. He's been getting **** for his conditioning in camp although he looks the slimmest I've seen him and moving well in the field. Sano was telling Polanco remember by "gordo" cousin he's lost 45 last two weeks. I don't believe it but that's Miggy. -

Yeah ashburyjohn, I got there just a little before 10 thinking I'd catching some of the warmups but they moved the 1p game up due to impending bad weather later in the day. He looked good out there, I didn't get any video of him pitching in-game that would have required standing next to Paul Molitor but he did throw 20 or so pitches after the game in the pen that I caught a little of https://youtu.be/G-0uLKuXLJ4 Met a few twinsdaily posters today, adds to the list; I'm always surprised that it's someone older than me. Buxton is hitting in the cages but thats all I saw him do (besides picking up/cleaning up), no running, no throwing etc. I know he said he's nowhere near in shape. Gordon and Stewart were absent from the camp, not sure where they were. Lewis Thorpe was out playing catch and doing long tossing and simulated pitching from flat ground. -

okay, not a problem goulik. I actually was on my way to talk to Poulson before JT Chagois was to take the mound, so I bypassed Brandon for videoing Chagois and talking to JT. LOL I'll ask Theofanopolous about the name and jersey, I'm sure he'll have a smart ass answer for it. He shoulda been drafted by the Cubs "theo-fan" - polous lol -

I'm glad everyone enjoyed and just proves that my wife is wrong sometimes LOL, someone out there does care to know what is going on at these events. I'll be back out this Saturday morning again, just like I asked last time anything or anyone in particular one would like to see? The Twins are scheduled to take on the Red Sox again at the Twins Developmental Complex at 10am. -
Further down is the brand new three-story housing unit and office for the Players' Developmental Academy, and let me tell you, the Twins did this right. That is except for the marked up rates they charge the players for simple things such as contact solution. I sweet talked my way into the first floor unit and it was nice, furnished with ping-pong tables, pool tables, conference rooms and offices. The walls are decorated with blown up old school Twins baseball cards and ESPN The Magazine covers with Baseball America magazines strewn about and the MLB network playing on flatscreen TVs. The players live on the second and third floor and room with a teammate unless they have family. http://twinsdaily.com/uploads/gallery/album_54/sml_gallery_2092_54_2650658.jpg http://twinsdaily.com/uploads/gallery/album_54/sml_gallery_2092_54_2137116.jpg http://twinsdaily.com/uploads/gallery/album_54/sml_gallery_2092_54_5368.jpg http://twinsdaily.com/uploads/gallery/album_54/sml_gallery_2092_54_3229073.jpg http://twinsdaily.com/uploads/gallery/album_55/sml_gallery_2092_55_2970033.jpg http://twinsdaily.com/uploads/gallery/album_55/sml_gallery_2092_55_709594.jpg http://twinsdaily.com/uploads/gallery/album_55/sml_gallery_2092_55_318386.jpg http://twinsdaily.com/uploads/gallery/album_55/sml_gallery_2092_55_806154.jpg The best part of this experience is that I'm the only "regular" person out there with all these players, coaches and trainers. With the 10am game cancelled due to wet conditions, the day started off as a fizzle and I was honestly about to leave but who do I see come out of the Academy Complex but Bryon Buxton and the rest of the Instructional League squad. Buxton was the first player out and has definitely hardened over the last two years since I've seen him in that he doesn't like the chit-chat or pictures or autographs as much as when he was fresh out of a small Georgia high school. Following Buxton were the rest of the Instructional League positional players minus Nick Gordon. The pitchers stayed behind in the Complex listening to a Rasmussen speech and watching video. http://twinsdaily.com/uploads/gallery/album_55/sml_gallery_2092_55_49675.jpg http://twinsdaily.com/uploads/gallery/album_55/sml_gallery_2092_55_2091421.jpg http://twinsdaily.com/uploads/gallery/album_55/sml_gallery_2092_55_1545438.jpg http://twinsdaily.com/uploads/gallery/album_55/sml_gallery_2092_55_259464.jpg At 9:30 the position players reported to what they loving refer to as "The Hill". At first glance it doesn't appear ominous but if you talk to any player out there, they hated it by the end. The first player taken was Miguel Guzman (and boy, can he fly) while the catchers were all picked near the end with Alex Swim getting the notorious last pick and crying about it. Kanzler ended up with Rainis Silvia, Jorge Fernandez, Nelson Molina, Trey Vavra, Tanner English,Tyree Davis, Rafael Valera and Stu Turner. , before deciding on slow-fast-slow placement of runners and picking Rainis Silvia to go first, which Rainis was pleading not to do. Jorge Fernandez is quiet the character: very verbal with encouragement, a quick wit and always cracking a joke.I said that I wasn't impressed with last year's strength and conditioning regime. This time around leadman Eric Beiser pulled out a great drill. It included a tremendous number of difficult exercises on that hill. Tommy Watkins, the FIL manager, loves giving his players crap, riding them hard. Most of the players thought he was joking when he said we're hitting after this but he was serious. , , Believe it or not, this drill killed several of the players with three of them puking. Tyree told me, "I never had to do this even in football. They said you work every muscle but I only feel it here (quadriceps). I know what I'm doing this offseason (pointing to the hill). I've never had to workout like this before." http://twinsdaily.com/uploads/gallery/album_55/sml_gallery_2092_55_216006.jpg http://twinsdaily.com/uploads/gallery/album_55/sml_gallery_2092_55_225568.jpg http://twinsdaily.com/uploads/gallery/album_55/sml_gallery_2092_55_1355596.jpg Buxton just stood on the sidelines and watched as he's nowhere near in shape. He's only hitting in the the cage at this point. Tyler Kuresa asked Buxton if he had done this drill before which Byron replied "Yeah, but I was in shape then." , thus making Kanzler group having to hit second and clean-up the hill and collect balls in the cage.http://twinsdaily.com/uploads/gallery/album_55/sml_gallery_2092_55_3714793.jpg While the positional players were finishing up with their drill, the pitchers came out at about 10:30 AM. Many of the positionals asked if the pitchers had to do the same drill, and received an emphatic "NO!" in reply. To which Tyler Kuresa replied back, "Gotta work on covering first today?" Eric Rassmussen asked Field Coordinator Joe Lepel if he had two catchers that weren't tanked so . Of course, that was after the pitchers played catch and long toss for 20 minutes. After JT Chargois finished I was able to call him over and get him to talk briefly about his recovery processs and . According to JT, the arm is feeling the best it has in a long time but he's having trouble with his location and command. He says he doesn't know how hard he's throwing which I'm sure was a lie, but according to a source he was 96-98 mph in his last outing. He's throwing mainly fastballs at this point and that's all he threw in his side session. The source I talked to said they plan to take it slow with JT, possibly starting off in extended spring training and/or Fort Myers and see from there. From my perspective Chargois seems like a genuinely nice kid and I wish him the best of luck but don't think he needs too much because that ball just explodes out of his hand. The pitchers then reported off to the inside arena while the hitters continued to hit in the cages. The rain started to come and I departed. Hopefully next week the rain subsides enough to get a game in when I'll be back the 27th. I hope you enjoyed the ramblings of a baseball fan. http://twinsdaily.com/uploads/gallery/album_55/sml_gallery_2092_55_232454.jpg *I have no affiliation with any club, organization, company, etc the above blog is just one baseball fan's look inside the not often covered Florida Instructional League.
